Hello from Myrtle Beach

0
0

I'm not looking forward to flying home tomorrow. It looks like it's going to be really cold. I have boots, mittens and my winter coat with me. I'm afraid that I'm going to be digging out the truck at the airport. I am prepared though. There is a shovel in the truck :)

The weather here is warming up. The first night was freezing. And there was no heat in the house. They couldn't get it fixed. Apparently the furnace is wired all wrong so they need parts and are coming back tomorrow. I slept here Friday night with the taps dripping in the bathrooms. Just to make sure that the pipes didn't freeze. I came up with a little trick. I put the blankets and my pjs in the dryer before bed. It was warm and toasty.

I spent the day with mom and dad yesterday and today. We watched TV. Ran to the flea market to buy flags for the front of the store. That was an experience. Had some great meals. And lots of time to talk with mom and dad. I also squeezed in a quick visit to the quilt shop. Many of you tell me that you have enough yarn at home. I'm the same with quilt fabric. I have enough but you can always use more.

And I did some knitting. Here is Ley Lines.

I love the pattern and the Serenity Silk Single from Zen Yarn Garden is a dream to knit with.

I'm in cleaning mode while writing. I keep jumping up to do laundry or the dishes. My flight is at 9am so dad is picking me up at 7. Way too early but I'd rather sit at the airport than have to run for my plane.

After I hit Publish, I'm going to knit for an hour or so. Just to relax myself before bed.

It's Cold in Canada

Wow. It was cold when I got off the plane. I thought about staying on it because it was heading back to Myrtle. However, the weather there doesn't look good either.
A chance of snow is expected before 10 a.m. Tuesday and then snow and sleet between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. before sleet will persist through the evening, according to the forecast for the Grand Strand.
They've cancelled school for tomorrow. A snow day for almost no snow. Sounds good to me. If you are there on vacation this week you aren't very happy.

There wasn't much knitting last night and I didn't knit on the plane so no progress to show. Thank you Rowan for giving me pretty pictures to show. There are new patterns available for purchase on Ravelry. These are in Rowan's new spring yarns.

We have a winner

Cathy, Lynn and Beth did the draw for those who donated to the Food Drive on Friday afternoon. Congratulations to Barbara H. who won an amazing gift basket of yarn, needles, books, basket, accessories and the suitcase.

We collected $425 and a lot of food. Thank you to everyone who donated!! You guys rock.

I think that we will be getting warmer weather sooner or later so it's time to get ready for it.

Here is a great spring/summer scarf from Classic Elite.

This garter stitch based mesh stitch scarf would work well in any number of yarns, but it is particularly pleasing in our newest yarn, Sandpiper.
Sandpiper is the perfect weight for a cotton: not so bulky as to be heavy and not too lightweight as to take forever to knit. The most interesting aspect of Sandpiper is its color – 5 shades are space-dyed in each strand, in short bursts of color, then 8 strands are plied together. Highlights and shadows occur organically as the colors in each of the 8 plies interact. From a distance, Sandpiper looks solid colored but up close the 5 hues dance and mingle, adding depth and interest. The most amazing aspect of Sandpiper: despite all the color play, due to similar values in each combination of colors, Sandpiper shows texture and lace beautifully!
Sandpiper's softness and drape, combined with its subtle undulating color changes, make the ideal summery scarf. Change the stitch count, in multiples of 4 stitches, to alter the width and make a skinnier scarf or wider stole.

Lynn and I are getting ready to redress the mannequins into bright spring colours. We need some bright to put cheer into these long cold days.

I really like how Ley Lines looks on my friend.
It's cold, blowing and snowing here right now. That means sitting on the couch and knitting tonight. I have so many projects that I want to get finished for the Knitter's Frolic.

Azalea

Azalea is a beautiful, delicate printed DK weight 100% cotton, feminine, pretty and romantic, ideal for open lacy textures and stitches, totally, utterly, simply delicate.
240m in a 100gram ball
22 stitches = 4" on 4mm needles

$19.95 a ball - but remember that a ball goes a long way. A long sleeved sweater or cardigan is taking 4 or 5 balls.
Louisa Harding has a new yarn, Azalea, for spring. There is a pattern book with 14 amazing designs in the yarn.

I'm writing early today. It's a big TV night and I need to be ready. Survivor and The Amazing Race. I don't think it can get any better. I'm almost to the next section on Ley Lines. Should happen tonight. I wish I could knit faster. I really need it done :)

Cerro

I received an email from Dream in Color last night. There are new colours of Classy Mini-Skeins coming in about two weeks. This group of 25 colours is going to bright, cheery Spring colours. Cathy is going to be happy. Now she will have an excuse to knit another Technicolor Cowl. Rumour has it that she was looking at colours to make another one on Saturday.

We've been rearranging garments and found our Kalinda shawl knit in Classic Elite Cerro. The pattern is available in a book (#1402 Sunny Day) or you can buy the individual pattern on Ravelry.
A triangular shawl worked from the center top to long lower edge in a sampling of eyelet stitches.

A few more patterns from the Sunny Day pattern book.
A lacy wrap with large tassels added to each of the corners for a whimsical flair.

There is a cute summer top in the book as well - Abelona.
Lace panels combine with openwork mesh for a light and airy summer smock top.
Purchase the pattern on Ravelry...
Cerro is a blend of soft pima cotton and alpaca that creates a yarn with drape and excellent stitch definition.
85% pima cotton
15% alpaca

24 stitches = 4" on 3.5mm needles
135m / 150 yards on a 50 gram skein

And then I found a free pattern from a Classic Elite Web-Letter.
The Kudzu Shawl by Rachel Henry is one of the Web-Letter’s greatest hits. The clever way the braided cables at the top grow into rows of leaves, flowing from one tier to the next makes it an irresistible knit for lace lovers. A quick click through of projects on Ravelry brings up beautiful modifications too – more leaves, and beads!
Download the pattern...
Beth and I snuck into the house today. The fireplace is taking shape. Now we are waiting for the stone to be put on face. We chose the stone from a very small sample and are anxiously waiting to see how it looks on a large surface.

I need to sign off and head back to the store. I forgot the cord to my computer. UGH! I've never done that before and it makes me mad. I'm wasting time that could be spent knitting.

I didn't get to watch The Amazing Race on Wednesday evening so I watched it online this morning. There is a new episode tonight so I need to be ready.

It's going to be an interesting season with the blind date twist. They were nice to each other the first leg of the race but in a few weeks things could get ugly. I'm not sure why so many people picked the dance routine challenge. I think that some people will be kicking themselves when they watch the episode later and see how easy the other challenge was.

Mr. UPS just brought in a few boxes of one of my favourite yarns - Rowan Kidsilk Haze Stripe. The colours are back in stock to make Iris Garden.

It really pains me that I don't have any Kidsilk Haze on needles right now. And now the yarn is right at the cash register in the store. I'm continually walking by it. UGH!

Diana just brought in a shawl that she knit for the store.
Vittran is a creature in Scandinavian Folklore. She looks like, dresses and lives like a human, and takes care of cows and goats. She is usually invisible, but sometimes humans can catch a glimpse of her. If you help her, you will likely get some kind of reward, but if you cross her, terrible things happen.
The Vittran shawl is a top-down crescent shawl knit in seductive Serenity Glitter Sock.
Yarn: 2 skeins of Serenity Glitter sock in the colour Rustic Wine

366m (400 yards) on a skein
80% merino
10% metallic
10% cashmere

Purchase the pattern on Ravelry...
The 10% Metallic is a Sparking Nylon that adds just the right amount of glimmer to your project!
My computer needs to be plugged in for a bit which is good news because I get to knit. I made it into the fourth section of Ley Lines. My goal is to have it done by next Friday.

Anise

The third new yarn from Louisa Harding for spring.
Anise is knitted as a summer chunky weight yarn, an exciting printed Cotton, Polyacrylic and Nylon blend tape effect yarn it has a stunning spice inspired colour range.
45% cotton
45% polyacryl
10% nylon

70m (76 yards) in a 50 gram ball.

The yarn is knit on 6mm needles. Get it done quickly spring/summer knitting.

Here is a free pattern from Debbie Bliss.

3 balls of Debbie Bliss Delphi and 8mm, 80cm needle. A quick and easy cotton cowl.

I'm finishing my post as Beth is searching on Ravelry for her next project. I was supposed to bring yarn home from the store for her and forgot it. Now she's looking for a pattern to go with yarn that is in the house. Then it's time for House of Cards.

Which project today??

0
0
I'm home from church and waiting for the Nascar race to start. The big decision - what project am I going to knit on today??

Here are the four choices. I laid them out hoping to help my decision.
On the left is Ley Lines in Malabrigo sock. I'm very close to where the pattern says to start casting off. Then there is a decision. The pattern calls for 950 yards and I have 1200 yards. How much bigger can I make it and not run out of yarn? I hate having yarn left over so I want to use up as much as possible. Normally that is easy to figure out but Ley Lines is gently cast off. 4 stitches every wrong side row. This will add about 50 rows to the shawl. Go too far and not enough yarn - that really isn't an option.

In the middle is my Come Together kit from Classic Elite. Easy knitting. I might save that for House of Cards later tonight. We only made it through one episode of the new season last night. We started the episode and had questions so we re-watched the last episode from the previous season. Now the new season is making sense.

On the right is Ley Lines in Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Silk Single. I just made it into the 4th section.

I think it will be Ley Lines on the left. I really want to finish the shawl.

It's much later and I'm ready for some sleep. I knit this afternoon (on none of the above projects - more on that later this week - it's a surprise right now until the yarn for the store arrives) while watching the golf and car race. Beth and I made it through two more episodes of House of Cards before calling it a night. One of us has to say 'enough' or we would still be watching when it is time to go to work in the morning.

Almost 10

I was looking up something on my blog and ended up back in November 2005. Look at these pictures.
Melo at 6 months old. He was such a cute little boy. I emailed the pictures to Beth and she wrote back that she can't believe he's almost 10. We keep thinking he's only 8.
He still sits and lies like this. And he is the happiest when he has something in his mouth. A toy is good but a sock will work. He doesn't chew them. Just walks around with them.

We unpacked a box from Bonnie Bishoff this morning. I love getting new shawl pins.
Simple and elegant these stick pins are a lovely solution for closure or decoration. The stem's wavy design holds the pins in place through several layers of fabric. They are lightweight and work well with fine fabrics as well as heavy garments.

Cathy has converted someone else into a Technicolor Cowl knitter. Here is Lynn's finished project.
The same cowl but flipped over so the right side becomes the wrong side. The colours look totally different. So much so that you might think it is two different cowls.

The same happens when you double over the cowl.

I'm waiting for the Big Break to start and couldn't find anything to put on while I was writing. Then I saw The Bachelor: Women Tell All. The drama is great. I didn't watch this season so I don't know the women but I have to keep watching to see the yelling and screaming and name calling. It's on commercial right now so I'm finishing quickly before the yelling starts again. Then it's time to knit.

New Samples

It's never too early to start your knitting for fall. This way you are ready when the weather turns cold. Wait. It hasn't warmed up yet. :)

We have new samples in Rowan Kidsilk Haze Stripe. Linda Sellick of Oneday Designs has loaned us her beautiful Airius shawl.

Light as air ……….. “Airius” This very easy crescent shaped shawl is worked in one piece, from the top down. The Garter Stitch shawl body consists of a single row repeat stitch pattern. The easy lace border is joined to the shawl body as it is worked. The border is written in both word and charted forms. Two strands of luxury yarn are held together and knitted as one throughout. This design can be worked by either using 2 balls of the same colour or have fun as I did and use 2 completely different colours and make your own unique colour way, it will be truly unique and beautiful!!
Purchase the pattern on Ravelry...

Yarn: 2 balls of Rowan Kidsilk Haze Stripe
Needles: 5.5mm

Knit this Woman's Short sleeved stocking stitch jumper from Rowan Loves. A design by Sarah Hatton using either the gorgeous Kidsilk Haze or the beautiful Felted Tweed, with a ribbed crew neck and deep ribbed sleeve cuffs. This is for the beginner knitter.
Wannietta just finished this sweater - we're getting garments started for Knitting Camp.

You can knit this sweater in single or double strand Rowan Kidsilk Haze. I chose double strand for a cozier sweater. And of course I chose Kidsilk Haze Stripe for more interest. The pattern is in the new Rowan magazine Rowan Loves Kidsilk Haze & Felted Tweed.

We used colour 363 - Storm.

I'm glad that my friend and I went out early for pictures. The snow has started and the snowplows are on the road already. And then we are supposed to get freezing rain this afternoon. Yuck!

I left at 4:30 this afternoon because the freezing rain did start. I don't mind snow but icy roads don't make me happy.

I'm finishing this while watching the season premier of Hell's Kitchen. I love seeing what their signature dishes are. Who uses canned pasta sauce when you call yourself a chef?? And you're trying to impress Gordon Ramsey.

Now it's time to knit. Ley Lines (number 1) is almost to the point of casting off.

Santorini

Santorini from Classic Elite should be in the store next week. I am so excited about this yarn. The colours are amazing and the designers came up with awesome patterns.

Santorini's colorways sing along the matte and shiny textures inherent in the yarn, adding vibrant color to warm-weather garments, wraps and scarves.
58% viscose
42% cotton

5 stitches to the inch on 4.5mm needles

114m in a 50gram ball.

The patterns will be available in the book Along The Shore. If you purchase the book, there is a scratch code in it so that you can download the patterns to your Ravelry library. You can also purchase the individual patterns on Ravelry.

Ley Lines #1 is at the point where I am supposed to cast off. I've pinned it onto my friend so that you could see the size.
I am working with 3 - 100gram skeins of Malabrigo Sock. I weighed what I have left at this point. 140grams. I haven't sat down to figure out the numbers exactly but I have a feeling that you will be able to get the shawl out of approximately 800m of yarn. You won't be able to increase the size though. If you like a big shawl then I suggest getting more yarn. Since I have lots of yarn and I want a really big shawl, I'm continuing on with my increase rows for a bit.

Optical Delusion

0
I'm working on the brochure for Camp - Kate's and Kim's classes are great. Totally different than classes that we have had in the past. This scarf is one of the classes that Kim will be teaching.
Come and learn all techniques required to make the Optical Delusion: Conflagration scarf! Backwards knitting, short rows in garter stitch, cable cast on, reading unusual charts and more!
I think that I might have to sit in on this one. The scarf looks awesome!

We received a shipment of yarn that makes me very happy. Classic Elite's Santorini is here. This is the secret project that I have been working on. It's almost done.
Pattern: Naushon - the pattern book hasn't arrived yet but you can purchase the pattern on Ravelry if you need to start right away (it's okay, we all understand needing to start NOW!)

Yarn: 3 balls of Santorini

Needles: 4.5mm

The pattern is very easy to do. If you can count to 6 and know how to knit (no purls) then you are good to go.
This colour is being mailed to Wannietta tomorrow. She is going to do the shawl version of the scarf that I am knitting.
I think that this might be my next scarf but that could change tomorrow :)

I'm home from work and getting dinner ready. Okay, heating up dinner. Aunt Barb made us a lasagna. You never turn down Aunt Barb's lasagna. It is amazing. Then Grey's Anatomy and knitting. I want need to get my scarf finished so that I can start another one.

Happy and Cheerful

We've been rearranging the store. Almost all the spring yarns live together in the front room now. It's a very happy, cheerful display.

Cathy dropped by earlier today with her Naushon Scarf knit in Santorini.
Cathy barely had it out of her bag before Lynn had it around her neck. This is colour 2148.

I thought I was going to get further on mine last night. We had Aunt Barb's lasagna for dinner and invited friends to join us. Unfortunately they didn't know when to go home :) I finally had to kick them out and then sat down to knit. It was after 1pm by the time my first scarf was finished and this one was started. Luckily the store doesn't open until noon on Fridays so I could sleep in.

A sneak peek at the colours of Classy Mini Skeins coming next week from Dream in Color. We are going to have fun making kits.

The Amazing Race just finished and I have a few comments

-the nurse just goes on and on and on. The doctor is going to turn on her soon.
-read your clue.
-why would you wait all night in the airport for the ticket counter to open? Go to an Internet cafe and find flights and then you can be at the right ticket counter when the airport opens.

Now it's time for sleep. If I start knitting it could be one in the morning again before I head to bed.

Spring is coming!

Happy Saturday. The sun was out today. It was a bit warmer. Spring is coming.
My knitters are busy working on samples for the Knitters Frolic. Diana is knitting Castalia in Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Glitter Sock. The colour on the right (crocus) will be the main shawl and the colour on the left (atlantis) will be the border.

We were straightening the Opal sock yarn in the store today and it got me thinking that there should be new colours available soon. I emailed my supplier and it was great timing. There will be a new collection of Opal sock yarn coming next week.

What to do on a Saturday night? Knit of course :) Enjoy your evening!

Carrara

Knit this ladies open, draping front jacket, the member’s exclusive free pattern for March 2015. Designed by Lisa Richardson using the exquisite yarn Silkystones (silk and linen), this garter stitch jacket has an eye catching ladder stitch panel down the centre of the back.
You can download the free pattern on Rowan's website...

Rowan Silkystones is a melange of toussah silk and linen, and each shade is a soft subtle blend of shades. Soft to the touch and with the light silken sheen of wet stones (hence the name) this yarn sits at the heart of our Spring Summer season.

What a beautiful day today. It was the first time in a very long time that I went out of the house without my winter coat. Just a heavy knit sweater.  It was very liberating :)

I'm hoping it is sunny again tomorrow so that I can get some pictures of today's knitting.

We made it through two more episodes of House of Cards tonight. We had to turn the TV off or we would watch all night. I can't say too much in case you haven't watched it but we each have our own theories on where it is going.

Weekend Knitting

0
0
There was some knitting accomplished over the weekend. It was nice being able to take my friend outside for pictures. Sunshine! It added a touch of a glare to the photos but it was so good to be outside taking pictures that I don't care.

Beth played with really thick yarn and big needles.
Each project took one ball of Freia Bulky (coming later this month - in time for us to take it to the Frolic). The cowl is knit on 15mm needles and the hat is knit on 10mm needles.
We are going to ask Cathy to make the pom pom for the top. She makes really good pom poms :)

Sometimes it is hard to see how the colours are going to knit when the yarn is in the ball. That is my excuse for knitting more scarves with Santorini.

This is one ball of colour 2125. Why just one ball? You might not know but a lot of yarn comes packed with 10 balls in a bag. The Santorini scarf takes 3 balls. The shawl takes 9 balls. If I used 3 for a scarf then that messes up the numbers. Now we have a swatch that really shows how this colour is going to knit up.

This is colour 2189 and it will be a full scarf. Classic Elite lets us buy kits before the yarn is released to make a sample because they know that samples sell yarn. Unfortunately I didn't get the sample done before the yarn arrived but it will be done soon.

Here is colour 2188 on a mannequin. Lynn sewed all the ends in and it looks great.

I spent some time at the dentist today. It's time to take out some fillings and replace them. YUCK!! There is nothing good to say about this. And it gets worse. I need to go back on Thursday to have more done. DOUBLE YUCK!! The good news about it. I don't feel up to paperwork so I'm going to knit.

Magic Balls

There are two new colours of Classic Elite Liberty Wool and we have them in the store now. This is 78103 Deep Valley.

A cardigan with an A-line shape and minimal finishing. The yoke, collar and sleeves are worked sideways in Garter stitch from the center to the cuff. Stitches are then picked up from the bottom edge of the yoke and worked down to the hem in Stockinette stitch.
The pattern is free when you purchase the Liberty Wool to make it.

The Magic Carpet Pullover knit in the new colour 78102 Magic Carpet. (Someone went out on a limb when they named this sweater :) )
A relaxed fit pullover with buttons closing the garter stitch side panels and cuffs.
This pattern is also free with the purchase of Liberty Wool.

The two new colours are calling my name and whispering 'inspira cowl, inspira cowl'. I'm trying to ignore it but it's getting louder.

Did you read Classic Elite's Web-Letter today? There is an awesome scarf. And we all have yarn at home that will make it.

The gentle scallops from the stitch pattern add interest to your magic ball knitting. The stitch pattern repeat is an odd number of rows
– each row of the repeat will be worked on the “right side” and “wrong side” alternately, makinga reversible scarf. This pattern will work well with self-striping yarns too – try Liberty Wool Print or Santorini.
Susan Mills, Classic Elite's designer writes
You know all those odd bits of leftover yarn that pile up? If you’re like me, you hate to throw any amount of yarn away and hang onto every last piece – just in case you need it. Winding a magic ball is the perfect use for your stray balls and odd bits. Read our latest blog post and learn all about it.
Beth is going to be digging through boxes of yarn tonight to find all the bits of Liberty Wool.

I need to hit Publish and get to my knitting. Every time I read over the post I see the colours of Liberty and now I'm going to be dreaming of Inspira Cowls. I need to get a different image in my head or I will be starting something new tomorrow.

Someone is obsessed...

...and it isn't me. I went to bed last night and Beth was still up knitting. She said that she couldn't stop. She had to keep going to see how the colours were going to come out of the ball.
She's using Santorini (I've hooked another one) and making a cowl that is a free pattern from Classic Elite Yarns.

The original was knit in Sanibel - Santorini's solid colour cousin.

Download the free pattern...

Cathy is going to be happy. The new colours of Classy Mini Skeins from Dream in Color arrived last night.

I started putting together more kits for the Technicolor Cowl. This is going to be an all day job because there are so many great new colours.

Of course I had to put a kit together of purples and pinks. It's a brighter version of Lynn's cowl that I have pictured above.

I started this post on Tuesday afternoon and then decided to save it for today. Here is the picture of Beth's cowl that she emailed me late last night.
This is almost to the half way point. The colours are coming out great.

Are you coming to the Toronto Knitters Frolic? Please note that there is a road closure that day.

Survivor tonight. I'm having a hard time getting into this season. There is no one that I want to win right now. Usually there is someone you love and someone you hate each season. We haven't reached that point yet.

Don't forget to check your inbox. We just sent out a newsletter.

Castalia

There was another trip to the dentist today and on the way I stopped to wash my dad's truck. It's going back to him tomorrow and my car is coming out to play.

Thank goodness I had knitting in the truck. It was a long line up so I got some rows done while I was waiting.

Diana dropped of our finished Castalia Shawl today. The shawl is beautiful and I think that I picked colours that play really well together.

The pattern (designed by Toby Roxane Barna) is not available for sale yet - it will be on Ravelry later this year. We have permission to sell you the pattern with the purchase of Serenity Sock Glitter or Serenity Silk Single or Serenity 20 from Zen Yarn Garden.
A wide triangular shawl worked from the top down, the Castalia shawl features an undulating lace border worked in a contrasting color.

Yarn: Serenity Glitter Sock (1 skein each of 2 colours)
Sample Colours: Crocus and Coast Guard
Needles: 4mm circular

It's much later and I got a lot more knitting done today. My car wash earlier in the day was at Suds. The best place to have your car washed. They will also do the interior. I paid to have it cleaned inside but the line up was so long that I would miss my dentist appointment. I went back after closing the store and sat for close to an hour. The truck is spotless inside - I even had them shampoo the floor mats so there is no trace of winter left. Then I dropped it off at mom and dad's as they were pulling in the driveway from Myrtle Beach.

Grey's is taping and it's time to watch. I want to get my scarf finished tonight so I can get back to Ley Lines.

Public Service Announcement

Look who came out to play today.
It was fun driving the mustang again. I had to remind myself that I'm not supposed to speed.

I left Beth alone with the dogs today and look what happened. They visited the Salon for a bath and hair cut. Now it's almost impossible to tell them apart. I asked Beth to get a picture and she thought it would be hard to get them to sit. I have a feeling she is offering them a cookie here.

Beth finished her Santorini cowl last night and Lynn sewed her ends in today. Getting Beth to knit was hard enough - there is no way that we can get her to do the finishing.

Pattern: Sanibel Cowl (free from Classic Elite)
Yarn: 2 balls of Classic Elite Santorini

It's nice being able to go outside at 6:30pm and there is still light.

Just before heading home I finished Naushon and Lynn sewed in the ends.

Here is tonight's Public Service Announcement. Don't watch The Amazing Race, answer emails and try to knit all at the same time. That can cause problems. I've put my knitting down to finish my post. I also put it down because I'm mad - I have to rip back my last row.
