Happy Victoria Day

Dad and Lucy came by for a visit today. Lucy loves driving around in the truck. So much that some days it's a fight to get her out.

Beth is golfing and I'm working on Starting Point.
The first triangle if finished and I'm onto the second one. More progress was made this afternoon after I took this picture. I think I should be caught up when the next clue comes out on Thursday.

I wasn't sure about the colours in the beginning but I'm liking them now. Most of my shawls are the same colour so it was time to branch out. Every shawl hanging in the store can't be purple :)

I'm very excited - Netflix sent an email this afternoon. One more week until the next season starts.

Knitters' Fair

I brought Starting Point to work today so that I could get some outside pictures. I didn't want to go back inside - it's beautiful out.

The Invisible Project Bag from Hedgehog Fibres is perfect for carrying your knitting.
The perfect project bag to show off your colourful skeins! Lightweight yet sturdy. Roomy enough for a larger project, it'll hold multiple balls of yarn easily. We think this is the best, most versatile project bag.
This bag is designed to stand up on it's own.
Material: Transparent PVC. Easily cleaned with mild detergent. Not machine washable.
Height: 37cm, Width: 28cm, Gusset: 10cm. Pointed gold coloured studs.
Mark your calendar - Saturday September 9 - The Knitters' Fair in Kitchener. I've been talking with the coordinator for the Fair and she told me some very exciting news. Lily Chin will be at the Knitters' Fair - doing a workshop and a talk. Lily has taught at our knitting retreat and you won't be disappointed.
Lily Chin, named a “Master Knitter” by Vogue Knitting International, has designed knitwear for magazines and yarn companies for nearly 25 years, and she has worked with designers Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, and Isaac Mizrahi. Her work has been on the backs of celebrities and super models, from Racquel Welch and Vanna White to Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell. She is the author of Knit and Crochet with Beads, The Urban Knitter, and Mosaic Magic, and she has written the “On Designing” column for Knitter’s Magazine and the annual “Focus on Fibers” report for Knit ‘n Style. Lily also is the reigning champion fastest crocheter in the world, a title she defended in October 2004 at the world championships in London. Lily Chin regularly appears as a spokesperson for the yarn industry in media across the U.S., including Time, the New York Times, USA Today, the David Letterman Show, the CBS Early Show, DIY’s Knitty Gritty, E! Style Network’s Craft Corner Death Match, Lifetime’s Handmade by Design, HGTV’s Sew Much More, and CNN. Lily Chin has lived in New York City nearly all her life and has been involved in some aspect of the fashion industry since age 13. She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology, and was educated at Queens College, City University of New York.

My garden is growing. Now we need the plants to start flowering.

The shed is scheduled to be painted on Monday. I'm so excited.

A Surprise is Fun

A shipment is on the way from Meadowcroft Dyeworks. We will have more colours of Rockshelter Sock (the yarn I used for my Find Your Fade). I've added the new colours to the website so you can see what we'll have early next week. There are a few colours that I don't have colour samples of. I ordered these sight unseen - sometimes a surprise is fun.

There will be new colours including
188 Stage Whisper

182 Feathered Juju

125 Boiled Lobster

121 Rubbing Elbows

84 Inquisitive Cornflower

76 Wilderness

5 Decadence

180 Paint Peeling

The shipment is going to include 4 Find Your Fade kits. Dave puts together some interesting colour combinations. This kit is in Rockshelter Sock (like my sample). It will retail for $280.

We have 3 kits coming in a new yarn called Moon Lorn.
This Meadowcroft Dyeworks fingering weight yarn is spun as well as dyed in the United States from wool produced on US soil. A rustic single-ply yarn, it runs thick-n-thin for a gorgeous homespun-like texture with the squooshy softness you expect from 100% Merino. This yarn base is available in its own unique palette of colorways distinct from our other bases.  We recommend washing this yarn by hand, though machine washing in the delicates cycle also works.  We don’t recommend tumble drying for any natural fiber.  This yarn is ideally suited for shawls, wraps, scarves, sweaters & vests, but may not be the best choice for objects that will receive heavier wear, like socks.
100% superwash merino from the US
384m (420 yards) in a skein
The Moon Lorn kits will retail for $260.
Moon Lorn takes the dye differently than sock. I can't wait to see how it looks.

My planters at the store are very bright. I tried to talk Beth into going to Terra tonight for more planters but it is the season finale of Survivor. Maybe tomorrow night.

Lynda has finished her latest project for the store and needs something new. Mr. Canada Post just picked up a box and she should have it tomorrow. She's going to make So Faded (pattern purchased on Ravelry) with a kit from Prism Yarns. The kit is for a shawl but I think that the shading will work perfectly for the sweater. Hopefully Lynda will email me pictures as she progresses though the colours so that I can share them. This is my last kit of this colourway - an email has been sent to Prism to get more.

Mr. Canada Post brought a large brown envelope before I went to Myrtle Beach. I threw it in my car and didn't open it. I opened the envelope tonight - surprise. The latest Interweave Knits. Copies will be in the store tomorrow.
Knit amazing and irresistible summer products in Interweave Knits, Summer 2017! From shawls and cover ups, to vests and cowls, you’ll find something memorizing to fall in love with.
Our shipment of Rockshelter Sock and Find Your Fade kits should be arriving late tomorrow afternoon. I can't wait to see the new colours.

Joji's latest clue just came out. I have clue 2 finished on one piece. For the second piece I'm still working on clue 1. Now the decision - which piece to work on tonight? Hockey - game 7. Master Chef Canada and The Amazing Race. I'll be up for a few hours yet.

Heritage Days is being celebrated in Ancaster from June 6-11. On Saturday June 10 we have a parade on Wilson Street.
On Saturday June 10, Wilson Street will be closed from Orchard St to Rousseaux St from 9:30am – 11:30am.  It will remain closed from Halson St to Rousseaux St until 3pm.
If you come off Rousseaux Street we are before the festivities. I emailed the Heritage Days Committee and received this response.
We have asked the City to allow us to open Wilson from Rousseaux to Academy, but unfortunately we are not allowed.  We have to have it closed at a major intersection.  This hurts businesses like you and we recognize and feel badly about that.  Our goal is to eventually have the street festival full all the way past your business.  We'd like to see the street filled with people from Halson to Mount Mary.  We are making strides towards that each year.  This, we hope, would enable businesses to better participate with street sales, promotions, etc.
We do tell the police officer at Rousseaux and Wilson to allow local traffic through on Wilson to get to businesses at that end of the street.  That would include your business.  If your clients come and ask the police officer to get through, they should be allowed.
Sorry to everyone for the inconvenience. Thankfully it only happens one day a year.

I know it's a long way away but I want to get the word out to everyone as soon as possible.

The store will be closed Wednesday July 5 - Monday July 10. We'll be open again on Tuesday July 11.

The Queen's Spiral Cowl

Jan finished Xanthe and it looks great. She used tosh merino light. The lace section is Onyx and for the stripes she only used one colour - Spectrum. She didn't alternate colours because Spectrum has so many colours in it. She made the shawl to go with her Mother of the Groom dress.

Susan finished her Xanthe too. She also knit with tosh merino light. I don't remember the two greys that she chose but I know that the contrast is Harvest. The colour combination is amazing.
Kathy brought her Xanthe in this afternoon for me to take a picture. Another beautiful colour combination. Kathy used Hedgehog Twist Sock - Velvet and Concrete for the stripes. Dragonfly for the lace.
If you are working on the KAL you still have time to send me pictures or upload them in our Ravelry group. Don't forget that Ambah is giving a coupon code for $6.50 towards a new pattern.

Frabjous Fibers has a new pattern - hurry, it's free right now.

The Queen's Spiral Cowl
Knit with a luxurious Queen of Hearts Mini Skein Pack, this cowl is fit for royalty. The merino and cashmere blend perfectly defines the stitches and eyelets creating a delicate, sumptuous swirl. The pattern is simple, and when worked in the round, you only need to remember one row. This cowl will spiral off your needles in no time!
We don't have the Queen of Hearts Mini Skein Pack (yet) but the Cheshire Cat Mini Skein Packs will work as well.
There wasn't much knitting last night. The hockey game was a nail biter. And it went late. Beth has been asking me for the past twenty minutes if I'm ready to watch The Amazing Race from last night. I better sign off now or she is going to start without me.

Getting Ready to go Yarn Shopping

I came to work this morning and forgot my knitting. Not very bright. I need to leave a project here just in case. So far I've worked on a newsletter that should go out early in the week. Then I did price signs that were missing from the shelves.

I'm getting ready to head to TNNA which includes preordering goods to bring home with me.  There are new stitch markers from Cocoknits. They have been ordered and will be in the store June 14.
Not just silver anymore! These fun markers are finished with gold, silver and copper coloring! The stitch markers are steel based, so still attach to your Knitter's Keep or any magnet so that you can easily store and retrieve them. Use them to mark rounds, increases, decreases, and stitch patterns. Included are 6 each of three sizes in each of three finishes, 54 markers total. They come in a cute-as-a-button kraft box secured with the click of a magnet!
6 each gold, silver, copper large round stitch markers (accommodate US 15 / 10 mm needles or smaller)
6 each gold, silver, copper small round stitch markers (accommodate US 9 / 5.5 mm needles or smaller)
6 each gold, silver, copper opening stitch markers (accommodate US 11 / 8 mm needles or smaller)

Blue and grey Knitter's Keeps will be in the box as well.

Yarn Bowls will be coming home with me. I don't know what colours - I'll be picking them at the show.
Some sad news from yesterday - my Rockshelter Sock didn't arrive. Mr. UPS tried to deliver it before we were open. The box will be here on Tuesday afternoon.

I had a visitor this morning. Lucy and dad brought me a tea. She loves to ride in the truck but she won't get herself in. She puts her front paws in and then my dad boosts her up. We had a revelation yesterday and now she gets in herself.

Lucy wanted to try mom's Ice Capp. I hope it made it home safely.

Lynn finished her socks in Juliet from Yarn Love. One skein on 2.75mm needles with a basic sock pattern. Lynn might not get them back - Beth felt them and commented 'these are really soft'.  Melo was quite enamoured by them too.

It's a day of finished projects. Sarah texted me pictures of her shawl - I think she wants to give it to me.

Pattern: Assana (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Hedgehog Sock (there should be another order from Hedgehog in the next week or so with 20 colours of sock)
Fun to knit and a timeless addition to your wardrobe, Assana provides a beautiful base for your favourite colour trio. Play two colours against each other in the stripes section: a gradient, speckled yarn, semi-solid hand dyes - anything goes here; then complement with a bold or subtle choice of colour for the zig-zag lace section.
Worked side ways, on the bias, Assana includes both written and charted instructions for the lace section.

Austin came and put flowers in our planters this week. My mom hasn't been able to come see so here are some pictures for her. The teal planter with Pansies is going to move to the other side of the driveway next week.
Roko is enjoying the beautiful weather. Finally he said. We can play outside.

Greyhound Shawl

I finished this shawl a year ago but it was never blocked. Spending a bit of time to block it made all the difference. The edges are lying flat. The lace work has opened up. And is smells so good - Pineapple Soak.

Pattern: Greyhound Shawl (pattern purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Mrs. Crosby Hat Box - I used 2 skeins each of Icebox Watermelon and Hummingbird

From the designer Thea Colman
My latest foray into shawl design is asymmetric, and I’m hooked!
I wanted an easygoing wear-everywhere project for summer and this shawl was just the thing. The pattern is rhythmic and soothing and perfect for knitting in the car, at the beach, or sipping a cocktail poolside.
It’s warm and soft and lightweight - the exact thing you want to throw over your shoulders when the sun goes down. And I know I’ll still be wearing this with a light jacket after Summer has passed and we go into Fall.
You can easily alter the pattern for more or less stripes, add a different lace or play with size as your stash and taste dictates. You can knit this in one color, or two, or even a whole bunch of different ones (gradient?).
Joji's Starting Point is growing. The third clue (on this piece) is almost finished. On my other piece I just finished the first clue. Unfortunately I was happily knitting away and forgot to read the pattern. I need to rip it back 6 rows.

Beth is out of town at a meeting so I'm with the dogs today. That means getting caught up on paper work. The website has been updated and now I'm going to work on Camp. I've started on class confirmation emails and a blog post has been done. Camp is only 16 weeks away. You might think that's a long time but it will be here before I'm ready :)

Free Your Fade

There is a new pattern available on Ravelry today that I'm very excited about. I've already purchased it and have started to look at colours.
Pattern: Free Your Fade (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Fingering Weight

Some knitters have commented that they thought Find Your Fade was too big for them. Here is a smaller shawl that will work for you. This shawl can be knit in 3 skeins (or more).
This shawl was created to be your favorite shawl pattern! Really relaxing garter stitch with engaging eyelet rows and endless color possibilities. It would be gorgeous knit up in one color, but you can just as easily use 20! I’ve extended the color melt sections for an even more cohesive fade, with easy instructions to add as many fade sections as you would like! The shawl is light weight and perfect year round when knit up in fingering weight yarn, but don’t let that stop you from knitting it up in any yarn weight you prefer to the size of your choosing!

I didn't think this day would ever get here. With all the rain it kept being put off. The shed is being painted today. I was here at 8am to meet the painters.

I'm so happy with the colours. Now I need to go to Terra after work. The window box needs flowers and I need some more planters for the store.

Sorry that there are so many pictures but I'm really excited :) A great new pattern and a pretty shed.
Thanks Custom Decorating Services for coming out today. We have used them many, many times. They painted our townhouse, my parents townhouse, a few rooms in my house when we moved in and they will be painting the rest of the house later this summer.

Watch your inbox - a newsletter went out today.

Each set includes 12 durable pairs of needles - one pair each of 3.5mm, 3.75mm, 4mm, 4.5mm, 5mm, 5.5mm, 6mm, 6.5mm, 8mm, 9mm, 10mm and 12mm. The set retails for $140. 6 full sets with a black faux leather case are coming in the first shipment.

Each interchangeable set also includes
-two cords of 24" length
-two cords of 32" length
-one cord of 40" length
-two connectors
-four keys
-eight stoppers

We also have individual sets of tips on the way in all 12 sizes along with cords. You can try a set of tips before purchasing the full set.

I'm getting ready for my trip to TNNA which includes starting an order for madelinetosh. There will be new colours at the show that I will add to the colours we need for the store. I asked for their latest discontinued list. There are some very good colours going. Once our stock of these is gone we won't be able to get them again.

Discontinued colours are marked with ** on the website.

There was some amazing news yesterday as well. A very special shipment is on the way. Right now UPS says that it will be delivered tomorrow. I'm not holding my breath. My guess is Friday.
Primrose Yarn Co.
The yarn coming is Adelaide.
100% superwash merino
single ply
115 gram
398 m/435 yards
This Yarn is absolutely perfect for shawls, mittens, cowls and light weight sweaters. Colors are vibrant and rich giving you a exceptional finished object. Yarn can be used for knitting, crochet or weaving.
*all yarn is hand dyed with color fast, fade resistant acid dyes
What colours are coming? Your guess is as good as mine :)
Typically we dye on a “best selling colorways” basis.  This means that the colorways we send to the shop are all colors we have great success selling ourselves, and that they are current with what is in demand and new.
All I can tell you is that we have 25 colours coming, 8 skeins of each.

Of course I cast on last night.
You had to know I was going to knit with the new yarn. I can't sell yarn in the store if it isn't good :)

The skein was easy to wind. No twists - my ball winder liked it. The yarn is soft and I love how the colours are working up.
The Lykke needles arrived late this afternoon and I switched over to them. They are very nice to knit with. The join is great - the yarn slides over with no catching. I would highly recommend them.
I like the colour variation in the needles.

Lynda is working on So Faded and sent a picture of her progress.

It looks awesome so far. I can't wait until she gets to the next colour.

I should have done this weeks ago. The mustang went to Suds this morning for a bath and interior cleaning. It is so much better. It drives faster too :)

Happy Birthday Dad

There has been a lot of excitement in the store this week with new arrivals. I totally forgot that a shipment is on the way from Hedgehog Fibres. The parcel has arrived in Mississauga and I'm hoping we'll see it early next week. Perfect timing - there is a new pattern from Ambah O'Brien.
Pattern: Nelia (purchased on Ravelry).
Yarn: Fingering weight
Inspired by the delicate yellow blossoms of the Golden Wattle, Nelia is named after the Australian Aboriginal word for the Golden Wattle, or acacia, tree. Nelia has elegantly tapered ends and is worked sideways with decreases forming a central spine. The airy lace chevron motif makes this the perfect project for warmer weather, and Nelia is stunning worked in silk or linen blends, but is equally lovely in merino.
Choose from two sizes – a scarf knit with one skein, or a luxurious two-skein wrap. Instructions for customizing the length of your wrap or scarf to make the most of your yardage are also included.

Dad and Beth took Roko and Lucy to the dog park today. Lucy loves lying in the stream.

Today is my dad's 75th birthday. We're having dinner out tonight at one of his favourite restaurants. One of his birthday presents is a gift card to Suds. Some one's really big dog slobbers and sheds in their car.

There will be a special parcel waiting for me when I get to Columbus on Friday. A box of patterns and books (including Westknits Bestknits). We were able to order some of our favourite Ravelry patterns in print form. Not everyone wants to purchase patterns online. And for most of these patterns, you are receiving a printed copy (on nice heavy card stock) along with a download code so you can still have it in your Ravelry library.
E-book download code included with each copy.
This new book is a collection of 13 popular Westknits designs by Stephen West filled with inspiring photos.
  • Exploration Station
  • Dotted Rays
  • The Doodler
  • Vertices Unite
  • Striped Bolting
  • Starburst
  • Color Craving
  • Askews Me Shawl
  • Knit 'n Slide
  • Garter Breeze
  • Boardwalk
  • Holey Chevrons
  • Briochevron Wrap
There will patterns from Ambah O'Brien including Bambara (above) and Kimba (below).
We will have patterns from Drea Renee Knits including Find Your Fade and So Faded.

Speaking of So Faded, Lynda has been busy.
The picture above is through three colours. Then the fourth colour is added in the picture below.

Free Your Fade is growing. Adelaide from Primrose Yarn Co. is very nice to knit with. Now back to it. I think we are going to start on the new season of House of Cards tonight.

Colour and Creativity

The pattern for this interesting sweater is available for purchase on Ravelry...

Fiora from Lang is 42% cotton, 42% acrylic and 16% viscose. There are 145m on a 50gram ball.

We have 5 colours in stock.
Where colour and creativity meet. The quality Fiora surprises us with a wonderful mix of many colours, some matte, some shiny, some light, some dark. This colourful yarn makes us think of wild flower meadows.

I started a 'Store Project' last week. Then it got really busy so it didn't get very far. I'm making In Threes (pattern purchased on Ravelry) in Mrs. Crosby Steamer Trunk. The colour is Harper.
I've knit the pattern before (twice) and it is super easy and super cute for a little girl. Steamer Trunk is 100% machine washable wool. When blocked the yarn almost feels like cotton. Perfect for a child's sweater.

The Edge went to Suds today. I'm driving it to Columbus on Friday - it'll be nice to have a shiny clean car.

I'm so excited about going to TNNA. From the previews I've seen there will be great yarns and lots of new colours in yarns that we already carry.

If you aren't following us on Instagram, we are needleemporium. I'll be posting pictures on Saturday and Sunday from the show.

Mr. Canada Post brought in a really big box from Hedgehog Fibres this morning. We have 4 new potluck colours.

We also received existing colours of Skinny Singles, Sock and Twist Sock. The yarn is on the shelves and on the website.

I knit a few rows on In Threes today. I love the colour. Perfect for a little girl.

I'm not enjoying the rain that we're having but my plants sure are.

A little peek into something that I will see in person on the weekend. The sets have been ordered and will be in the store by the end of August. Who makes them? Check back to see.
This set contains 12 colours of sock yarn, each approximately 50-52 yards for a total of at least 600 yards.
Someone is addicted - and it's not me.
Lynda has finished all nine colours and will be starting on the sleeves tonight. When you are fading, you just can't stop. One more row. One more row. Yay! I get to join the next colour. Just a few more rows to see how it looks. Before you know it, it is way past your bedtime.
I was working on a colour combination for a shawl today and ended up with these seven colours for a Find Your Fade. No, I didn't keep it for myself. I put them together in a kit.

The big girl came for a sleep over last night. We need to get a much bigger bed. And we need to get her a watch. She woke us up at 5:30. A little early. 7 would have been early enough.

Bribery

I learned a long time ago that taking bribes gifts to TNNA helps to get my orders faster. The ladies at Mountain Colors claim that our chocolate bars in Canada are much better than their US chocolate bars. I take a pack and hand them out to my suppliers. Amanda at Lorna's Laces loves Ketchup chips and they aren't available in Chicago. Now she'll have lots. I'm not the most patient person - I want my yarn now. Anything that makes it comes faster is worth it.

Another peek into some great colours and a new pattern.
I'm mostly packed. A load of laundry needs to go in the dryer and I can finish in the morning. Once I'm finished writing it's bed time. Thank you to Cathy for coming in today. It's been a very long week and I needed time to do some important errands. Thankfully I accomplished everything today. Now I can go buy yarn :)

Here are a few preshow pictures. There are new colours from Freia Fibers. This is their display in the 'New Products' area.
Cheshire Cat mini skein kits from Frabjous Fibers are going to look different in the future. No more plastic bags.

Friday evening there is an event called Sample It. Suppliers set up tables showcasing new products for the next season. Shop owners can purchase kits to start making samples for their store. Jacqueline from Soak decided that she needed to be in the picture with this awesome shawl. This is Amanda (ketchup chips) from Lorna's Laces wearing a new shawl design from Romi. It is a full skein of Shepherd Sock along with a String Quintet kit. The pattern will be available on Ravelry next week. I knew that this pattern was coming so I preordered the yarn. It'll be in the car when I head home on Monday. The ketchup chips worked :)

This is a bit out of order but I wanted yarn pictures first :)

I made it safely and in record time. And that included being half an hour at duty free because there were 12 buses. This is the first year driving to Columbus with no construction, no accidents and very little rain.
My room has a great window seat - perfect for knitting. Maybe tomorrow night. It's bed time.

My goodness I'm tired. I bought a lot of yarn today.
There are 4 new colours from Mrs. Crosby. All four colours will be coming home with me in Train Case and Satchel.

The Frabjous Fibers booth had a Rainbows in the Gorge cardigan knit in the new So Fond of Rainbows colourway Spectrum of Moonlight. Our kits should be in the store this week. It's not quite as bright as the picture - the lighting in the convention centre isn't the best.

There are new Party of Five kits from SweetGeorgia. These should be in the store late August.

Meet Spincycle Yarns.
Our kettle-dyeing process is slow and meticulous, and results in loooooooong color changes and unpredictable transitions through the skein... Every skein is like a snowflake! Or a fingerprint! One-of-a-kind, like you.
Dyed in the Wool is coming in July.
The color transitions are slow and dramatic, and each skein is unique. When planning larger projects requiring more than one skein, allow for nuance.
heavy sock / sport weight // 100% superwashed American wool // 200 yards per skein // hand wash or machine wash cold, lay flat to dry // suggested gauge: 8-5 sts per inch on US #2-7 // MADE IN THE USA FROM SHEEP TO SKEIN
These are the fun colours that I ordered.
The Issa Cowl is a brand new pattern knit with two skeins.
This is Kate, one of the owners, who helped me with my order. She is wearing the Gumshoe Cowl which takes two skeins of Dyed in the Wool.

New colours of madelinetosh unicorn tails will be in our next order. Some current colours are being discontinued and new colours are being added. There will be 26 colours in all. Five of the colours are only available in unicorn tails.
Now it's bed time. I have more yarn to buy tomorrow :)
