Aileen

'I'm at the stage of my life where I'm too hot to wear sweaters.' I hear this all the time. How about a vest?
A slightly fitted vest knit in one piece from the bottom up with armbands and collar picked up.
We knit Aileen (pattern purchased on Ravelry) in Zara from Filatura di Crosa. There are many yarns that will work for this including a few of my favourites

-tosh sport
-tosh pashmina
-Erika Knight British Blue 100
-Arranmore Light

Cathy and Sarah came for a visit today so that Sarah could pick her yarn for Veronika.

She also picked up some Magnum for a few gifts.

Sarah was wearing her newest scarf, Esjan (pattern purchased on Ravelry). It is knit with Woolstok. Three colours, two skeins each.
This top down shawl starts with easy garter stitch. Two contrasting colors are added with a giant holey lace pattern. The holes increase in size while also adding stitches to the overall semi-circular shape. The fabric is knit loosely with a worsted weight yarn resulting in a deceivingly fast large shawl.

After work Beth and I went to Dundas for the Hamilton Potters Guild Fall Show. A very little piggy bank for Beth. She has a collection. A small sheep for me. I have a collection. And then a yarn bowl. I have a collection. It was Beth's first time at the show. She was impressed by the quality of work and the payment process. They have this down to an art.

Now I need to get back to my Veronika. We gain an hour tonight so I hope to get a few rows knit.

Fuse Fiber Studio has finished dying my yarn. Oh my goodness!! I think I could stop my post here. I don't know what can make this any better. Rebecca will be shipping the yarn tomorrow or Tuesday and I hope to see it by the end of the week. I think there could be another Bambara Wrap in my near future.

I kind of watched football today and did a lot of knitting. I made it to the halfway point on Veronika.
We took some quick pictures to show how the construction of the cardigan. The garter stripes are going horizontally on the front and go vertically on the back.
When the body is finished I will pick up across the bottom of the back to do the ribbing.

Shark Tank is taping and it's time to get back to it. The weather is getting cooler and Veronika will be perfect to wear to work.

Elder Tree

Are you new to shawls? Do you want to knit a shawl but don't want to work with fingering weight yarn on 3.5mm needles? Take a look at the Elder Tree Shawl (pattern purchased on Ravelry).

Hey, that looks exactly like The Lonely Tree Shawl pattern
Yep, pretty much exactly! The only difference with this one is that it’s got a much more intuitive chart, that can be repeated forever (or until you run out of yarn). This version can be more easily modified to make a huge shawl, out of any weight yarn that you choose! Oh, and the leaves along the spine and sides of the shawl are symmetrical, which is different than the original Lonely Tree.
The original Lonely Tree Shawl was charted, and it wasn’t very easily modifyable to make it larger - which is why the Elder Tree was made! Have a couple balls of lace weight yarn that you want to use up? Like The Lonely Tree Shawl? Well, The Elder Tree Shawl is here to help
The Elder Tree Shawl is another lovely Fall weather leaves shawl knit in a worsted weight yarn. A perfect edition to any autumn wardrobe. It’s a simple lace knit that would be good for intermediate level knitters who are comfortable with knitting, purling, and working yarn overs.
Yarn: Mrs. Crosby Steamer Trunk. We used 5 skeins on 5.5mm needles.

The pattern is easy to adjust if you want to make it smaller. The stitches are easy as well. Knit. Purl. Make 1. Yarn over. Pass slipped stitch over. That's it. And the wrong side rows are relaxing. K2, purl to the last 2, k2.

I have knit many garments in Steamer Trunk and really like the yarn. Once it has been blocked it feels like cotton. And it is machine washable so it's great for kids.

I spent a bit of time on Ravelry today. The yarn from Fuse Fiber Studio should be arriving on Wednesday but I have a feeling we won't see it until Thursday. I hope it's on the early UPS truck which means we have it around noon. Otherwise we'll see it late in the afternoon. What am I going to knit? Find Your Fade is always an option. Bambara is a good contender. I'm also thinking about Kimba.

You can't go wrong with a pattern from Ambah.
Grab some yarns that light your imagination on fire and play with colour in Kimba Shawl. Anything goes in this fun project – speckles or semi-solids, a gradient or a fade, wild contrasts or classic neutrals. The shawl starts with a garter body shaped with short rows to form a crescent shape. The dramatic flames of lace that form the border are worked in four colours, making for engrossing knitting as you race to the next stripe. Choose from the small, still generous, size or knit the large for a piece that can be wrapped and worn in a variety of ways.
Now I need to get working on Veronika. I want it finished by the end of the month which won't be a problem. It's a pretty quick knit. The problem is that new yarn is arriving and I'm going to have to try it out. If it isn't good I can't sell it :)

Wearable Modern Designs

Melanie Berg introduced two new patterns today. I saw her post on Instagram and sent her a message right away asking for permission to use her pictures. These are great!!

Pattern: Verdon (purchased on Ravelry)
It’s a generous rectangular shawl knit from four different colors, using short rows to seamlessly combine textures like stripes and lace into a garment that captures the steep lines and beautiful color play of the Verdon Gorge itself.
Verdon is knit in fingering weight. You need 4 colours - 400 yards of each.

Pattern: La Crau (purchase on Ravelry)
For millennia, migratory herds of Merino d’Arles sheep and their humans have roamed the fertile countryside across France, choosing the high meadows of the Alps during the summer and the lush plains of La Crau when winter’s chill hits.
La Crau is also knit in fingering weight. You need 3 colours - each under 400 yards.
Melanie's patterns are very well written. All patterns have been test knit and tech edited.

Here is a bit about Melanie from her Ravelry page. You can see all her amazing designs here.
I’m Melanie, and I combine texture and color into wearable modern designs that are both playful and beautiful. I design to surprise — from matching cheeky stripes with elegant lace, to choosing unexpected color combinations. I love to collaborate with other creative types around the world, and my patterns have been published by yarn companies and knitting magazines large and small.
I live with my husband and three children in Bonn, Germany, where I find inspiration in the landscape, history, and culture.
Now there are a few more contenders for the Fuse yarn that should be arriving tomorrow. I've been tracking the boxes and as of right now they should be in the store by 5:30.

Quicksilver

I talked about Melanie Berg's new patterns yesterday and it got me thinking about my Melanie Berg shawl. Where was my shawl?? Lynn found it this morning and I'm happy because I love wearing it.

Pattern: Quicksilver (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: tosh merino light - 3 colours - 1 skein each
Silky smooth and mercury quick, this fluid shawl swirls with color.
Quicksilver is worked flat from tip to edge, with garter stitch stripes and a lace mesh that knits up in the blink of an eye.
Wedges of the lace fan between the striped sections, lending the shawl a lovely slanted shape.
My shawl came out bigger than the pattern. I don't like left over yarn so Diana added more rows when she was knitting it.

We've been rearranging to make room for the Long Dog and Fuse shipments. Pashmina has a new home.

There are empty boxes when you walk in the store waiting for yarn.
Mr. UPS brought in the first box from Fuse. It only had 5 colours. More tomorrow.

These are the One of a Kind colours and they're on the website.

It's been a long day. Beth leaves for work a lot earlier than I do. This morning Roko decided he needed to bark at someone walking by the house at 6:30. Do I go back to sleep for an hour or get up? I got up and started the day. Now it's time to put my feet up and knit a few rows. It's Survivor evening.

Cupcake

The yarn from Fuse Fiber Studio arrived this morning. Oh my goodness. How am I going to choose??

I played with a few combinations and patterns this afternoon. I'm going to sleep on it and decide tomorrow.

We sold Wendy Cupcake over and over again for baby blankets. The yarn was discontinued and I bought up everything I could. We thought that we were out of it but this afternoon we found more bags. There are a limited number of kits available.

I guess winter is here. We've had some snow (I think about 4 snowflakes but that is more than enough) and it's really cold. I need to go digging in my closet to find some of my heavy sweaters.

Where is he??

I sat with my nose pressed to the window all day waiting for Mr. UPS. He finally came late this afternoon with four boxes from Long Dog Yarn.
The colours are awesome and have been added to the website. I'll get more pictures tomorrow. By the time the boxes were unpacked and the website was updated it was time to head home.
I've decided. I'm going to knit Kimba (pattern purchased on Ravelry). I'm being good and haven't wound the skeins yet. The goal is to get Veronika finished. I made it to the 3/4 point on the back. I should have the back finished by tomorrow night and then on Sunday I can work down the front.

For the past week we've been cleaning up the store. Doing some inventory, moving yarns around and updating the website. We found some Offhand Design Bags that never made it to the website. These bags are sewn in San Fransisco and are made in limited quantities so you probably won't see someone carrying your bag.

There are lots of zippers and pockets - I have both styles and carry them when flying. You have room for your knitting, wallet, phone, headphones, iPad, snacks....

Dinner is finished, the kitchen has been cleaned and laundry is in so it's time to knit. Veronika isn't going to knit herself.

Remembrance Day is a day for all Canadians to remember the men and women who served and sacrificed for our country. It is a day we encourage every individual, young and old, to pause, to give thanks and to remember.
From legion.ca

The Outlander Series. Five great colours that are available in Bounce Sock and Single.
bounce sock (formerly known as twist)75% superwash merino, 25% nylon; 4-ply | 464 yds per 100 g | 7-8 sts per inch on US 1-3 needles
With the plush bounce of the Bounce base + the strength and durability of the Sock base, this super soft yarn is just about perfect in every way! Use it in everything from socks, shawls, and light-weight sweaters for projects that will be a delight to wear and hold up to the test of time.
single: 100% superwash merino wool; single ply | 400 yds per 100g | 7-8 sts per inch on US 1-3 needles
This single-ply merino yarn is wonderfully soft and plush, making it a real treat to work with. With a high twist, it produces lovely stitch definition and is perfect for accessories, shawls, and light-weight garments.

I played with some colours for Find Your Fade.

I played with colour combinations for different shawls but I'm saving those for tomorrow. Sometimes I'm stumped with Sunday blog posts. My plan is to work on Veronika tonight but it doesn't make for good blog pictures. Not until it's finished. That is my excuse for having lots of projects on the go - especially colourful ones. Better pictures for the blog.

Beth has a new project. I brought home a skein of Bamboo Bloom Handpaint and Mrs. Crosby Steamer Trunk for her to make the Hanasaku Cowl. The pattern is free in the store when you purchased Bamboo Bloom.

You can mix any worsted weight yarn with the Bamboo Bloom. I picked something colourful to keep Beth interested.

While I was playing in the new yarn yesterday I put together some colour combinations for Dotted Rays - Speckled Fade. Alex knit my shawl and has offered to knit me another one.

I also put together some for Bambara.

The sample uses a 3 colour speckle gradient with a brighter colour “pop”. C1 is the colour “pop”, C2 is the darkest of the gradient trio, C3 is the lightest colour and C4 is the middle shade of the gradient trio.
The skein lying across the bottom is the 'pop' colour.

I finished the back of Veronika this afternoon. Now it will go quicker - I get to cast off 49 stitches so my rows are down to 96 stitches. Beth has dinner in the oven so I'm heading back to my needles.

Jolly Wee Elves

I thought I was finished the back last night when I posted but I really wasn't. I needed to do some decrease rows first. The back is now finished, I've cast off 49 stitches and I'm working down the front.

Cathy shared a picture with me and I forgot to share it with you.
Working on my Churchmouse Jolly Wee Elves. Some still need scarves and their arm definition. They are easy to knit and you can have one done in a couple of hours.
Pattern: Jolly Wee Elf (purchased on Ravelry)
“In 2 gauges for 2 sizes.”
These little handmade pals, created by Jennifer Evans, are perfect on the holiday mantelpiece, tree, or packages. But they’ll celebrate any season cheerfully! Originally designed for fingering-weight yarn, we love them just as much a bit bigger in DK-weight yarn . Once we started knitting them, we just couldn’t stop!
With elves, its certainly true that the more you make, the merrier! They’ll naturally all turn out a little different, but you can make them even more various: Taller. Shorter. Plumper. Thinner. All green for St. Paddy’s day. All pink for your Valentine. All white for a snowman with a smart black hat and coal buttons. Once you’ve got the hang of it, the only limit is your imagination. Knit up a whole neighborhood of wee elves!

These are very, very cute and I think they would look amazing in Rowan Felted Tweed. I'll be purchasing the pattern tomorrow :)

Jewel Dragon

I'm totally obsessed with Svetlana Gordon's work. Her scarves and shawls are amazing. I wrote her this morning and asked if I could share her pictures on the blog. Over the next few weeks I'm going to feature many more of her designs. It was hard to decide which to start with. This is one of the first of Svetlana's patterns to catch my eye.

The pattern is called Jewel Dragon (purchased on Ravelry) and it is knit with Mechita from Malabrigo.

The cold is coming and it's time to think about a cowl. Do you want to knit with a dreamy, soft yarn? Chalet, Chateau and Palace from Classic Elite fits the bill - 70% Alapca and 30% Bamboo.
The Coors Cowl by Annissa George (owner of Stitch House Dorchester, an LYS in Boston), has been a favorite CEY project since we first published it in our Web-Letter in early 2013 Issue 273. One hank each of five colors makes this generously sized squishy cowl worked in simple seed stitch.
The original version was worked in undyed Chalet. We now have colorful Chateau and tweedy Palace to mix and match with Chalet for endless color combinations.
The pattern for the Coors Cowl is a free Ravelry download.

Classic Elite has a free pattern for mittens in the same yarn.
Soft and warm, Palace is a wonderful mitten yarn. Worked at a tighter gauge than usual, these simple mittens, with rolled edge at cuff, are worked flat and seamed, and work up quickly. Mittens are identical and will fit either hand. Tweedy Palace is interchangeable with undyed Chalet and solid colored Chateau, for a rainbow of color choices.
It's been a day of cleaning and rearranging in the store. We've moved around some sample garments. Moved around some yarn. Made up kits. A newsletter has been started too. Now it's home time. Dinner and a bit of paperwork before knitting.

Autumn Dance

This is Svetlana Gordon's Double Jacquard Autumn Dance (pattern purchased on Ravelry). It is knit with Malabrigo Sock and Mechita. If I saw someone walking down the street wearing this scarf I would stop them to comment on it. It is amazing!!
Double Jacquard is a technique that produces two color designs with no floats on the back. It is a process of knitting a fabric that has the two sides stocking knit. One side is predominantly color A, the other side is predominantly color B.

Beth knit the Cara Cowl and loved making it. The yarn is Independence from Spincycle Yarns.
We are very pleased to introduce Independence, a completely domestic yarn! The sheep are raised in the midwestern US; the fiber is dyed and milled on the west coast of Washington. We support our local economy; that's how we got our start as a handspinnery and it's where our hearts lie.
This yarn is a balanced, aran weight single, with the thick-and-thin texture of a handspun yarn. We kettle dye each batch with care and intention, and our meticulous milling ensures that our yarn maintains the color artistry of our original handspun product. Unique, luxe, and handmade sustainably in the USA.

We received two new colours today. She was very excited but asked me to leave her skeins in the store. If I bring them home then she is going to want to start and she has to finish the cowl she's currently working on. I'm all for working on more than one project at a time, however I want the Bamboo Bloom cowl for the store so I'm holding the new yarn hostage for now. :)

It's time for Survivor and The Great Canadian Baking Show. And some knitting. I have about 50 rows to go on the front of Veronika. It should be finished by the weekend.

Mr. Canada Post brought in a box from JUL this morning. We have the new Filigree Stitch Marker Set with Row Counter.
Handmade Fair Trade in Indonesia
White Brass
6.25mm inside diameter - fits US10 Needles
11mm outside diameter
There are three different filigree designs - two markers of each pattern - making up this set of five filigree stitch markers and one filigree row marker.  Cast in white brass and then hand-finished and fabricated, these lovely stitch markers are a gorgeous addition to your collection of beautiful tools.  Each set comes in a round metal tin with a top to keep the set together.

We also received some Screw-In Closures

I was here very early this morning (8am) to meet with the sales rep for Noro. We have a few new yarns coming now and then more for spring. I'm excited about Tennen which should be here in a few weeks. The yarn is 50% wool, 25% silk, 25% alpaca. The colours are very muted.
Tennen, meaning natural, is Noro’s tonally-flecked DK/Aran yarn blending together wool, silk and soft alpaca. This combination has created an individual style of naturally inspired yarn suitable for a wide range of garments.

Meet Bad Apple. One of the new colourways coming from Primrose Yarn Co. The box is leaving Primrose today. I will be able to start tracking it tomorrow and I hope to see it early next week.
I can't wait to meet Cheap Thrills :)

Mr. UPS dropped by this morning with our box from Primrose Yarn Co. I was shocked to see it already.
This is what I saw when I opened the box. There were 240 skeins. The website has been updated so you can see all the colours.

Svetlana Gordon used Malabrigo Mechita to make Aurora Borealis (pattern purchased on Ravelry).
I read through some of the comments on Ravelry and one knitter remarked that the construction of the scarf is unique and it's not hard to knit.

You start out by making all the semi circles and then they are joined.

A box of books and patterns is on the way to my parents in Myrtle Beach and will be in the store at the beginning of December. Due to the weight of books it is almost impossible to have them shipped directly to us.

We will have copies of Westknits Bestknits.
E-book download code included with each copy.
This new book is a collection of 13 popular Westknits designs by Stephen West filled with inspiring photos.

Beth likes to do puzzles on her computer and she left this one last night for me to see. What pretty sheep.

Match & Move

Of course I picked colours of Adelaide. I've decided that when Veronika is finished (should be tomorrow) I am going to work on two shawls at once. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and every other Sunday I will knit with Fuse. The opposite days are going to be Adelaide.
The colours from left to right are
Salem
Forbidden Forest
Salem
Thrash

I decided to use Salem twice because I love the colour and I want to make the shawl a bit bigger. I chose skeins that were slightly different to add some interest.

The pattern is going to be Match & Move (pattern purchased on Ravelry).

How about the new cup from Tims?

I have 10 more rows of ribbing and Veronika will be finished. Okay, the knitting. Then two small seams and sewing in the ends. Another hour of knitting and then bed. It's been a long week.

True Colors

I started knitting with the Fuse Singles this afternoon. The yarn is very nice to knit with and I really like the colours that Rebecca dyed.
I decided to make Melanie Berg's True Colors (pattern purchased on Ravelry)
Let your true colors shine in this eye-catching shawl!
Whether your style is bold, elegant, playful, or simply unique - you’ll find this asymmetrical triangle shawl to be the perfect playground for your personality.
It knits up to a generous size, with a simple lace pattern creating a stunning scalloped effect. Eyelet stripes separate gradient color bands, which become the accent color when the scheme is reversed near the end.
Melanie used Shepherd Sock from Lorna's Laces. This colourway comes as a kit (a full skein of Shepherd Sock and mini skeins for the stripes) and Diana knit the shawl in these colours. She blocked it this weekend and we'll have it in the store later this week.

Beth finished her Hanasuko Cowl. I was too busy knitting today to block it for her. I'll let her make dinner tomorrow and then I'll do it. A fair trade :)
I cast off Veronika last night. The ends need to be sewn in but I was having too much fun knitting this afternoon to start on them.
I wrote my blog post earlier and then went back to knitting. Another repeat finished. I really need to go to bed.

Cross My Palm

Our good friend Kate Atherley has a new pattern - Cross My Palm (purchased on Ravelry)
Less than 50gm of any medium-to-heavy fingering weight sock yarn turns into a fabulous pair of fingerless mittens.
The bias rib makes them a little more interesting to knit and wear than the usual, but not so challenging that you’ll have to stop watching your favourite TV show… It also improves the fit - they are snug and sleek, so that you can layer them under other mittens, or wear them without impeding your ability to work the computer or coffee machine.
Suitable for knitters with experience working in the round, and working increases and decreases.
You need 160m of fingering weight yarn and 2.75mm needles. One skein of tosh sock will make you two pairs.

We will be sending out a newsletter tomorrow. It's one that you don't want to miss. You can sign up in the top right corner of the blog. Black Friday? Cyber Monday? We'll have details in the newsletter.

Last week I decided that I was going to work on two projects at once. I'm kind of addicted to True Colors so the other shawl is going to have to wait a few days. Melanie Berg writes a very good pattern that is easy to follow. I have the chart memorized and it's a fun knit.

Black Friday

Diana stopped in after work with True Colors. I love it. It was way too dark outside for pictures so I took a few in the store.

A newsletter just went out about Black Friday and Cyber Monday. If you don't receive our newsletters, you can sign up at the top of the blog. There will be a few more yarns on sale that aren't on the website. These are in store only. The first is Flurry. I'll reveal more tomorrow.

Flurry Chunky is a wonderfully soft and cosy yarn with a gorgeous fleecy texture. It comes in a range of turbo-dyed colour effect shades, these include soft, powdery colours, as well as stronger, more vibrant ones too. Flurry is the perfect yarn for creating the snuggest of knits for all the family and we have a gorgeous collection of designs with patterns for women, children and babies. Flurry Chunky is machine washable on a wool cycle.

Flurry will be on sale for $5 a ball. That's half price.

5 - 7 balls are needed to make a blanket.

2 - 5 balls are needed for this sweater. Sizing is from newborn to 7 years.

Leather Closure

Wannietta knit a cardigan for Beth a long time ago. It was too small for Beth but now it fits. We were supposed to have a zipper sewn into it but that didn't happen. Beth wants to wear the cardigan tomorrow so we added The Latch Leather Closure from JUL. There are four up the front and it looks great. My pictures of the full cardigan don't look great so I'm going to ask you to take my word for it.

When we finally find the time to take the cardigan in for the zipper, we can unscrew the leather closures and use them for something else. Or if I decide that I want them for something else they are easy to remove.

Happy Thanksgiving to our friends south of the border. I hope you are enjoying your really long weekend. I enjoyed watching football this afternoon. And a bit of knitting. I've been working on Match & Move. The pattern is super, super easy. It is the same row over and over again until you reach a certain number of stitches. Then you repeat the same two rows until the shawl is finished. Perfect for planes, trains and automobiles. I'm going to work through this colour because I want to see how the fourth colour plays. Then it is going to be put away until our flight next Friday.

I made a few adjustments to the pattern

-I'm knitting on a 3.75mm needle. The pattern says 2.75mm-3mm but I think that the fabric is too tight on that size needle. I also want my shawl to be bigger

-I'm fading in the colours. I worked the first colour (A) until I was 8 rows less that the colour change. Then I did 2 rows of B, 2 rows A, 2 rows B, 2 rows A. Now the repeat will go 2 rows of B, 2 rows A, 2 rows B, 2 rows A, 32 rows of B, 2 rows of C, 2 rows B, 2 rows C, 2 rows B, 32 rows of C...

Now back to it for a few more rows before bed.
