Beth is coming up with her own pattern ideas now. She had a cowl pattern and decided to put her own spin on it.
This was the first attempt. Part way through she decided that the needle was too big but she doesn't believe in doing a tension swatch or in ripping out so she finished it. I added a Lantern Moon shawl pin to make it a bit tighter on the neck.
This is the second attempt on smaller needles. She is happier with how it looks. I haven't blocked either one yet.
I asked her to write down what she did.
Here is the pattern:
Cast on ______ stitches (has to be an odd number)
Join in the round making sure not to twist stitches. Place marker
Row 1 – Knit 1, Slip 1 with yarn in front. Repeat all the way around
Row 2 – Knit all stitches
Row 3 – Slip 1 with yarn in front, Knit 1. Repeat all the way around
Row 4 – Knit all stitches
Repeat these 4 rows until you are almost out of yarn. You can end on any row. Cast off loosely.
Now it's my job to count the stitches on her cowl and figure out what size needle she used - it was already cast off when I got it. No, the ends weren't sewn in. I had to do that for her.
You need:
1 skein Misti Handpaint Chunky
8mm 80cm needles
Cast on 79 stitches. If you would like a tighter (meaning smaller around and closer to your neck), taller cowl then cast on less stitches making sure that it is an odd number.
Join in the round making sure not to twist stitches. Place marker. Make sure that you check after the first round to make sure that your stitches aren't twisted.
Row 1 – *Knit 1, take the yarn to the front, slip the next stitch like a purl, take the yarn to the back* Repeat from * to * all the way around ending with a K1
Row 2 – Knit all stitches
Row 3 – *Take the yarn to the front, slip 1 like a purl, take the yarn to the back, knit 1* Repeat from * to * ending with a slip 1, take the yarn to the back.
Row 4 – Knit all stitches
Repeat these 4 rows until you are almost out of yarn. You can end on any row. Cast off loosely.
She's read through the pattern and confirmed that I have it correct so now I can share with you.
