We're home from setting up the booth. It will look much better tomorrow after we get the garments hung and the booth 'fluffed'.

This is going to be a quick post because it's bed time. 5am is going to be here soon.

We had a great day at the Frolic. A room full of yarn and knitters. How can that be a bad day?

Thank you to the Frolic organizers and volunteers for a great day.

Thank you to dad and Beth for helping Friday night and then coming back yesterday afternoon to pack up.

Thank you to my crew - Lynn, Sarah and Wannietta. You won't see Wannietta in any pictures because she was also a Frolic volunteer and was working that job before the show opened. Once the crowds were let in we didn't have time for more pictures.

Dad, Beth, Lynn and I went on Friday night to set up the booth. Lynn stayed overnight and we headed out early to finish up in the morning. Unfortunately I didn't take into account the extra time needed because the DVP was closed. It was a bit of a rush to get ready. When Sarah arrived she asked about booth pictures. I handed her my phone and off she went.

Sarah Selfie.

Sarah and Lynn Selfie. They knit the cover sweater of the newest Interweave in Mrs. Crosby Carpet Bag. Now everyone is thinking about their Knitter's Fair sweater. We need to decide early so that Wannietta can get in on this.

We had some special visitors in the booth late Saturday afternoon. Missy has been working with Guide Dogs for years. She takes them for the first year of their life and they go everywhere. She's had dogs in my store. At the Creative Sewing and Needlework Festival. They go on vacation. To the bar. Wherever Missy goes, the dog goes. Right now she has two.
Beth told me to trade yarn for this guy. He is so cute. I want/need him.
Here is a link to the website about Guide Dogs. Rick Mercer did a segment on them and until then I didn't realize that Guide Dogs get no government funding. These dogs are a life saver for many people.

Today is all about rest. And knitting. I need to get back to my pashmina shawl. Tomorrow we unpack. I'm hoping that if I leave everything in the van that someone will magically unload it for me.

I'm back to my knitting. Clue #2 of Follow Your Arrow is done.

So far I am following the A stream. Clue 3 has been started since my pictures and I ended up doing A again.

We had some great news last week. Our townhouse finally sold. It's been a long haul. Getting up every morning and cleaning the house isn't something I wish on my worst enemy. Makeup and hair products away. Bed made with the 10 throw pillows (who thought that was a good idea). Wipe the granite counters and sink. Clean the hardwood. Make sure dirty laundry is in the hampers. The house shone for 6 months. Today not so much. Now we just have to get our new house in order. We've had possession for a month but there are issues. I'm not going to go into them all but we've had the fireplace redone. A wall knocked down and redone. Today we met with the builder about our tile floor. The house has been painted 3 times already and then need to paint it again. Everything will work out. Just not fast enough for me. We don't have to move right away so we are getting the new house in order before the moving truck comes.

Today was a shopping trip to Urban Barn. There was a sale on living room furniture. We bought a special chair for the loft. This is going to cause a fight!
For a snuggle or a snooze, this chair invites and delights, providing a nest-like retreat for one or two. No-sag springs and reinforcement provide extra support while three plump cushions and a toss pillow surround your private sanctuary.
The perfect chair to read or play on the iPad. In quiet. It will fit a human and a dog. Now you see where the fight begins. Which human and which dog?

Now I need to go finish my tax return. Nobody wants to keep the taxman waiting.

Yummy Cables

Fiona Ellis has a new pattern. Wow! These are beautiful cables.

Reminiscent of the switchbacks on Lombard Street in San Francisco the cables on this cardigan zig zag back and forth.
It also has a unique feature; the I-cord button loops are worked on both the left & right fronts so that it buttons from both sides.

The yarn? Sport weight.

I'm inspired to knit cables now.

Free Pattern and New Knitting App

A Simple Little Something (download the pattern for free on Ravelry) is knit in one skein of Mrs. Crosby Satchel. What a great way to try out this yarn. I promise you won't be disappointed. I have used it many times - it feels great in your hands and blocks out beautifully.

Amy Herzog has created a very cool app. I must admit that I haven't played with it yet but I do know knitters who have and they only say good things about it.

The Knitter’s Toolbox is exactly what the picture says – an app we’ve written that contains four super-useful, general-purpose knitting calculators:
  • A buttonhole spacer
  • , which will space a number of buttons easily over a number of stitches;
  • A multi-purpose gauge widget
  • , which will take any two of the following, and tell you what the third must be: row/stitch gauge, row/stitch count, and length;
  • A shaping placer
  • , which will tell you how you must space your increases or decreases to get as smooth a line of shaping as possible while keeping the number of “even” rows the same;
  • A pick-up calculator
  • , which will tell you not only the total number of stitches to pick up along a vertical edge, but what that translates into as a ratio.

All those calculations that no one wants to do but we need them in our knitting. I'm not sure what is more exciting - the buttonhole spacer or the pick-up calculator.

I have no new knitting to report. The last few days have been spent getting the taxes done. My personal return and my HST return are done.

There have been a few miles put on my car this week going to the new house to make sure that things are going ok. We've had a few issues. This is a totally new fireplace. Everything. The old stone was taken off and we started from scratch. It's looking good now. The mantel needs to be stained again and we are waiting for a trim kit for the actual fireplace - it's like a picture frame so you won't see the black.

For the past two days we've had three men on their hands and knees removing all the grout from the main floor. Every room is tile - long planks that look like hardwood. The grout was supposed to be grey and somehow we got a bad batch. They are redoing it tomorrow.

We're getting there.

Meet the Mezquita Shawl. (pattern purchased on Ravelry) What yarn? Serenity 20 or Serenity Silk Single or Serenity Glitter Sock from Zen Yarn Garden. This colourway is Mossy Oak and we have it coming in Serenity 20. Can't wait? Not your colour? Don't worry because we have many amazing colours in the store. One skein and 5mm needles is all you need.

Melo is 10 today. Wow does time fly by.
As a puppy he had to have something in his mouth at all times. We had a lot of toys in our house.

He's a little lighter in colour (and maybe a bit lazier) but still just as cute :)

They have started on our neighbour's house. That is good news. By the time we move the house will be framed and hopefully there will be a bit less dust.

Among the Wildflowers

Meet Plunge. A new colour from madelinetosh for spring. This colour is really calling my name. It's not blue. It's not green. It's not as bright as turquoise. I wouldn't call it teal. Maybe aquamarine?

Rhona came in yesterday wearing Among the Wildflowers. This kerchief is knit in one ball of Classic Elite Bella Lino and the pattern is free. It was so cute and I wasn't thinking - I should have taken of picture of Rhona wearing it. She said that she had been running errands before coming to the store and everywhere she went someone asked if she could make them one. It was so cute that I started knitting one this morning. Rhona's advice - don't bother with the fringes on the back of the neck. Instead add a few more rows before you cast off. My advice. Knit until almost finished. Then from the other end of the ball, cut the yarn for your fringe. Add the fringe that you want and then you know how much yarn you have left to finish the kerchief.

Follow Your Arrow is growing too. I'm almost finished Clue #3.
Maybe when finished I will make Follow Your Arrow 2 using pashmina in Plunge. Now the wheels are turning. And the fingers need to move faster.

Quicksilver

I'm very addicted to Melanie Berg's shawl patterns right now. Her shaping and stitch combinations are interesting. I love putting together different colour combinations. When I was picking colours for this shawl that Diana just finished, I picked three that I normally wouldn't put together. Three colours and no purple. I love how they play. I think this might come with me to TNNA at the end of the month.

Pattern: Quicksilver (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: 3 skeins of tosh merino light - whiskey barrel, worn denim, amber trinket
Silky smooth and mercury quick, this fluid shawl swirls with color.
Quicksilver is worked flat from tip to edge, with garter stitch stripes and a lace mesh that knits up in the blink of an eye.
Wedges of the lace fan between the striped sections, lending the shawl a lovely slanted shape.
Diana knit until almost out of yarn so my shawl is bigger than the pattern calls for. Diana and I think alike. Why have yarn left over?

That title has been used before but if I would take my advice life would be much better.

I finished Clue #3 last night on Follow Your Arrow and started on #4. Ysolda wrote this in the pattern so I was going to choose the easy route and go with Clue B.

Note that 4A is significantly more challenging than 4B but does introduce some variation to the shape of the shawl. If you’re new to following complicated directions you may prefer to stick to option B.

Beth told me not to be so lazy and do A. A is what I'm working on. Row 1 went fine. No problems with row 2. Then row 3. It said to work until 6 stitches before the marker but I didn't have 6 stitches. I counted and counted and my stitches were fine. I reread row 2 and that was fine. Then after about 15 minutes it hit me. I read row 2 wrong and my markers were in the wrong spot. Arghhh! Now I'm back on track and row 8 is finished.

I'm not sure why I was questioning the pattern. There are 3400 projects on Ravelry. I'm sure if there was a problem with it someone would have made note of it before now. :)

It's official. The Sold Sign went up yesterday. Because we are a townhouse with a condo corporation the buyers have to make sure that the reserve fund is okay and that there aren't any lawsuits against the corporation or Beth and I. The report came back clean and the next chapter can start.

It's always a great day when customers share pictures of their finished work. Dawn lives in BC. Unfortunately we have never met but we do share a love for Rowan yarns. Here is her latest project.
What a work of art. And it fits her perfectly. The pattern is called Estonia and is knit in Summer Tweed. The yarn is discontinued but we have stock and I can come up with some great colour combinations.
Knit this women’s intarsia tunic from Rowan Knitting & Crochet Magazine 55 online, a design by Kaffe Fassett using the ever popular yarn Summer Tweed (silk and cotton). With short sleeves and graphic diamond patterning, this knitting pattern is for the intermediate knitter and is a free pattern to download.
It used to be a free download on Rowan's website but I can't find it there now. I've sent an email to Rowan asking where we can get the pattern. I'll let you know what I find out.

I was up very early this morning and couldn't get back to sleep so I knit a few more rows on Follow Your Arrow. I'm about to start row 15. So far Clue A isn't as hard as Ysolda made it sound. If you follow what the pattern says you won't have any problems. I've always been a chart person but for some reason I am following the written words on this pattern. Maybe it's the fact that I'm getting older and having a harder time seeing the chart :)

Ikat Knitting and More!

TNNA is the end of the month. This is the trade show that I go to in the US to see the new yarns, needles, books and accessories for the next season. It's very exciting. Before the show I go through the map and figure out my route around the show. With the hand dye companies, the first order in is the first order dyed. You need to visit those booths the first day. I've already ordered the new colours from Lorna's Laces sight unseen. I know they will be good. I have it on good authority that there will be a new madelinetosh yarn (no clue what but I'm sure I'll be ordering it) and 12 new colours of madelinetosh yarn. I need to get there first thing on Saturday morning. Prism will also have new colours that I don't want to miss out on. Zen Yarn Gardens too. I'm going to be hustling on Saturday.

Then the thing that has me excited. I'm taking a knitting class. This is new for me. In my life I have taken one 3-hour knitting class. The only thing that worries me is that it is 6 hours. That is a long time for me to sit still.

Ikat Knitting and More!
Ikat knitting harnesses the ability of hand-dyed yarns to produce pleasing patterns of stacks, blocks, argyles, spirals and more. Learn hands-on how to read a skein of hand-dyed yarn, how to find the Magic Number that will pattern and how to apply that number to different pattern types. Two ways of finding a Magic Number will be covered, allowing greater flexibility when working on your own. Two swatches will be completed that can be used in-store as examples.
My class is with Laura Bryant from Prism Yarns.

A new style of dyeing pioneered by artist Laura Bryant, Ikat dyeing contrasts two subtly related colors with cream. Laura's precision dyeing allows unique patterns to be knitted by simply employing a Magic Number (the number of stitches required to use up exactly one round of colors), attention to color stacking, and color repositioning.
Rooted in the traditions of weaving, Ikat dyeing for knitting takes advantage of the subtle shifts of color as yarn, which is plastic, is knitted by humans, who are not machines! Just as Ikat-dyed warps shift as threads are wound onto the beam, we knitters have slight changes in tension that cause the colors to shift.

Yes, I showed this picture yesterday but the dress is so cute that I wanted to show it again.

I promised an answer about Estonia and my friend Josie, who works for the North American distributor of Rowan, got back to me today. I like it when people answer quickly.
It looks like Rowan took this down because it uses Summer Tweed, a discontinued yarn.  However, we are asking them to reinstate it and in the meantime I've also asked them for the PDF which I'll forward to you.  Should have this in the morning.
So, if you want to make the dress, I can give you a copy of the pattern with the purchase of Rowan yarn.

There was no knitting today. I actually worked :) There was a lot of updating of the website. Now it's time to close my computer, make a tea and pick up my needles.

Lots of Knitting

Here is Follow Your Arrow at 10:30 this morning. I put it on a 60" needle so that I can spread it out and show the pattern. There were 7 rows to go on Clue #4.
My work area today. The door sill going into the house was dented before we took possession and the door company was coming today to fix it. I was there before 11am. The time of their call. Anytime between 11 and 4. Thank you very much. One chair. No TV. No Internet. No fridge.

At 3:30 pm I had finished Clue #4 and was 3 rows into Clue #5. Still no door company. They finally showed up at 4:05. And the new door sill was also dented. I sat there all day for nothing. The quiet was nice. The knitting was good. I made it through a few episodes of Elementary. This is not how I wanted to spend my day. I should have been working.

The fireplace is almost finished. The trim kit is on and looks great. Now they need to put in the stones and then we can have fire.

The house is starting to come together and we are hoping to move at the end of May. Thank goodness our townhouse took so long to sell. At least we can stay here while the new house is finished. I would be really upset if we were living there through all the work.

Everyday Socks

Lynn was proud of herself this morning. She finished her first sock using magic loop. She's made many pairs on double pointed needles and decided that if Beth can magic loop then she can too.

Pattern: Hermione's Everyday Socks (free on Ravelry)

Yarn: 1 skein of Mrs. Crosby Train Case in the colour Bahama Woodstar

Today's tosh colour is Kilim. Bright and cheery on this sunny day.

My dad's biggest pet peeve about our house is the mess outside. We had this awful pile of dirt in our front yard. This morning he handed the guy back filling the house beside us a few dollars and the pile is gone. He will be happy when he goes by the house this afternoon.
It's much later and he's home for the day - golf is on so he made some excuse that mom needed him???? I got the phone call "The house looks so much better with the pile of dirt gone". I knew he'd be happy.

I'm moving along on Follow Your Arrow. Row 9 10 of 24 on the border clue. Almost there. It's time to start thinking about what's next.

Woodstock

Meet Woodstock. Another new tosh colour. Not exactly the colour that I think of when you say Woodstock (tie dye seems more appropriate) but it is a really great colour. There is a touch of rusty gold and yellow green.

I came to work early to water the flowers and I'm totally soaked. Thank goodness I have an hour to dry off before we open. That was my first OOPS of the day. The next is that I forgot my knitting. And there is no knitting started in the store. I know that I mentioned something new but I wasn't prepared for it today.

It's later in the day and I found something to knit. No, I didn't start anything new. I had some yarn for my CustomFit cardigan here so I started the back. I don't think there is anyway that I can get it finished in two weeks for TNNA but I will have it ready to wear this summer.

Tetra Cotton

I think that summer is here and it's time to think about summer garments. I showed these patterns from Rowan a few months ago but snow was on the ground and who could think about knitting something sleeveless?

For some reason Blogger is acting up. I can't get all the font the same size so I decided that bigger was better than smaller. This way my mom can read the post. :)

And speaking of mom, Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there. I hope your family treats you well tomorrow.

Follow Your Arrow is growing. 11 rows to go. After I hit Publish I'm going to watch TV and knit. Unfortunately there are 2 sporting events on so I'm flipping channels. That kills the knitting time. I need a voice activated converter.

Happy Mother's Day

I hope all the mothers out there had a great day. Mine was a busy - I had a lot of moms to talk to. I took mom #1 cake, ice cream and flowers this afternoon. I'm not sure how much cake my mom got, my dad grabbed it from me when I walked in the door :)

When I got home I talked to the other mothers (Jane, Cathy and Bev).

Row 18 is finished. Six rows to go.

The number of stitches is growing so it's taking longer than I had in my head. It will be finished this week. In time to block and wear when I go to TNNA. I always go with lots of luggage (thank goodness this is a driving trip - I can take as much as I want). Knitwear takes up a lot of room. And I need something different for every day.

Unicorn Tails

Madelinetosh has taken 30 colours of their merino light and is producing them in mini skeins. We have 14 colours in stock and the remaining 16 should all be here in about 10 days. What can you do with them? Mitts. Hats. Or take all 30 and make this awesome scarf. Sew the ends together and make a cowl.

The pattern is called Unicorn Stripes and you can purchase it on Ravelry...

What a great way to play with colour. There could be colours in the scarf that you might not like but in the whole scheme of things they look great. However, there is no reason why you can't take a colour or two out and double up on the ones that you like.

I know that some of you might want to start right away but I don't have all the colours. So, here is my deal for you. Preorder one skein of each colour (30 skeins in total) and we will give you 10% off. Instead of $6 a skein, you will pay $5.40 a skein. This special price will run from now until May 18. Also, the first colour is Coquette which I do have in stock. You can purchase the 30 skeins and take Coquette now to get cast on.

It's almost finished

I have about 200 stitches left to cast off. The shawl would have been finished earlier today but I had to rip back 400 stitches last night. I was watching Love it or List it and didn't pay attention. UGH!

I'm using Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off and my edge is very loose. After blocking I might need to take it out and tighten it up.

I like to watch Ysolda's video before doing the cast off just to make sure I'm doing it right. Here is a link to the short video - 40 seconds and you are on your way. There is also a longer video if you haven't used the cast off before. It is amazing how stretchy it is. This bind off is great for the neck of a sweater. I remember the first sweater I knit. An Icelandic sweater in Lopi. I finished the ribbing on the neck and cast off. When I tried to put it on it wouldn't go over my head because I pulled the cast off so tight. Where was Jeny then? Her cast off will work great for the neck of a sweater - especially if the cast off is being folded to the inside and sewn down.

Mr. CanPar brought us new knitting bags today.
Decodelire is a French company who design the most gorgeous, funky and practical designer bags and accessories for all ages.
A medium sized knitting bag with a clear outside pocket. Includes inside pocket and zipper closure. Measures: 35 x 12 x 28cm
The cost - $25.00

A large knitting tote with an outside clear pocket- perfect for storing your pattern in! Includes an inside pocket and has a zipper closure. Measures: 36 x 13 x 36cm.
This bag is $27.00.

It's time to head home. Can you believe how cold it is outside? I could have worn a sweater today. And not a light one. My phone says that it is 10C right now but I might be tempted to call it a liar. It feels way colder. A good night to curl up with your knitting.

Follow Your Arrow has been cast off and soaked.

Yuzu. It’s the scent you've been waiting for. It’s so lovely it’s a bit silly. Pucker up and give your laundry some love with a kiss of tart citrus + crushed eucalyptus.
The kitchen smelled so good last night.

After those chores I had to decide which project I wanted to resurrect. Small problem. It was after 9pm. Is that a good hour to be bringing out something and figuring out where I am in the pattern? I had a few Offhand Design bags to go through before I found Ley Lines #2. Can it be finished in time for TNNA too???

Coming this fall

I spent this morning ordering yarn for fall. I'm very excited about what is coming.
This is the most awesome thing. The dog's head, paws and tail are knit for you. You knit the scarf and attach them.
What kid wouldn't want this scarf?

Beth just got home from golf and I showed her these pictures. She wants one!

 There are cat kits too.

New colours of Noro Kureyon. Lots of brights. Perfect for the Log Cabin Afghan.

There will be three new sock collections from Lana Grossa.

There is a new yarn from Malabrigo - Mechita.
The complexity of color and the softness of Malabrigo Mechita is simply stunning. It's a single-ply, 100% superwash merino wool yarn that's hand-dyed in colours you really won't believe until you see them for yourself. This machine washable yarn would make extraordinary garments and accessories.
100% merino superwash, machine washable, gentle cycle, cold water, 420 yards (385 m) 100 grams, gauge 26-30pts = 4 inches, Needles US 1-2 or 2,25-2,75 mm
13 colours have been ordered but I have a feeling that more will be added when I see the yarn in skeins at TNNA.

What's new in the store right now? We received many bags of Malabrigo Rasta. Super bulky, quick to knit. Great for an easy project in the car on the way to the cottage. And you can start on your Christmas projects.

One skein. 15mm, 60cm needles. Easy as pie.

Now it's time for me to knit. Ley Lines isn't going to finish itself.
