Our last day

We have been on the go since 8 this morning. We left the room and haven't been back until now (8pm Vegas time). There is a new restaurant at The Mirage called The Pantry. Excellent breakfast. Then we headed to the Bellagio. It isn't a trip to Vegas until you walk into the Bellagio and see the flowers on the ceiling.
Do you think that Dale Chihuly will make flowers for my ceiling?

The Conservatory is decorated for Chinese New Year.
New flowers were being added to this lady.

The hill that the mountain goats are sitting on is coated carved styrofoam.

Why is there an egg in the Conservatory? There is a Faberge exhibit at The Gallery of Fine Art. We saw the Faberge exhibit that was there a few years ago and would highly recommend seeing it.

This evening we went to Aria to have dinner at Bobby's Burger Palace. This is a hamburger restaurant from Bobby Flay. We ate at his Connecticut restaurant and loved it. Vegas did not disappoint.

Beth was excited - a Bud with dinner.
Their specialty burger is 'chrunchified'. Plain potato chips on top.
Awesome onion rings and fries.

I forgot to show a picture yesterday that I took at the airport.
Only in Vegas.

Good bye Mirage. I'm not sure when we will be back but you know that we will be staying with you when we get there.

This is the Atrium. People work in here every day to keep the flowers and plants looking so amazing. And the smell. It is to die for - fresh flowers - nothing is nicer.

Our flight home was very uneventful. The plane was fairly empty so we could spread out. I finished the right front on my cardigan and got the other front cast on.

I'm sorry to complain but it is really cold in Canada. I'm on west coast time so it is only 7pm but I'm still heading to bed. Back to work tomorrow. I can't wait to see what Cathy rearranged while I was away.

Spud & Chloë Stripey Finetakes color inspiration from our solid palette in the Fine collection and mixes them together to create seven new yummy ice cream colors. Stripey Fine is a beautiful blend of 80% superwash wool and 20% silk that’s absolutely ideal for shawls, cowls, baby knits and some pretty fancy footwork.
The yarn will retail for $20.50 a skein.
175m on a 50gram skein

The colour names are making me hungry.
Here is my CustomFit cardigan so far. One front finished and the second cast on. Knitting on 8mm needles helps it to grow faster :)

The colours are truer in this picture. I normally wouldn't post the big picture but I wanted to prove that I did do some knitting while I was away.

There were a few phone calls back and forth between madelinetosh and myself today. A huge order is about to go into production for us. Lots of everything except pashmina and ASAP. We hope to have it in the store by the middle of February.

2015 Food Drive

It's Food Drive time again. Last year our customers were amazing. We filled the Edge full of food and gave $400 in cash.

While I was away at the trade show I started collecting for our amazing gift basket.
-a Nina Tote from Offhand Designs
Small and Sassy and Swinging on your Shoulder... Nina Tote makes a come back as your new favorite purse or small project bag of the season!
-Artistic Difference by Talitha Kuomi and From Folly Cove by Julia Farwell-Clay - pattern books from Classic Elite Yarns

-Radiant Petite Madison Layers (far right) - the sparkly skein of purple yarn from Prism Yarns - 73% merino, 7% cashmere, 10% silk and 10% sparkle - 372 yards on a 100gram skein
a single ply of luscious high quality merino, cashmere and silk. Lustrous, with a beautiful sheen and great dye saturation
-Mrs. Crosby Hatbox in Icebox Watermelon (bright fuchsia - far left in bag) - 75% superwash merino, 15% silk and 10% cashmere - approximately 300 yards on a 100 gram skein

-Solemate from Lorna's Laces (middle) in a brand new colour for spring (it appears there is a bit of a purple theme happening with the yarns so far) - 55% superwash merino, 15% nylon and 30% outlast - 425 yards on a 100gram skein

-a ball of the brand new bulky from Freia Fibers - 79m on a 150gram ball - one ball will make a cowl - 100% wool

I am donating this suitcase. It is a small bag - carry on size. When I did my fall order of Regia sock yarn I received this from Schachenmayr. It's been hiding in the basement because I knew that I was going to use it as a prize for the food drive. A self-patterning suitcase - how cool is that?

This is just the start of our gift basket. Yarn and accessories are coming from madelinetosh, Rowan, Old Mill Knitting and Zen Yarn Garden. This afternoon I'm getting on the phone to more suppliers to ask for donations. I'm aiming for a gift basket valued at over $1000.

The Ancaster Community Food Drive. This is the 23nd year for the event. So far they have collected over 1,203,000 pounds of food and over $63,5000. The food is distributed throughout Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas and Flamborough.

For every can/jar/box that is donated in the store, you will receive an entry into the draw.

All food needs to be delivered to the store by Thursday, February 19, 2015.

The draw will take place on Friday, February 20, 2015.

The draw is open to residents of Canada-the value of the goods and the price of shipping prohibits us from shipping outside of Canada.

If you live out of town and would like to donate, please send me an email and we can arrange a cash donation. You will receive 5 entries for $10 or 10 entries for $20.

Rowan Magazine #57 should be arriving at the beginning of February.
This season's knits are influenced by natural landscapes and traditional techniques. Trends for the new season embraces the hand crafted idea by offering rustic and textured designs as well as modern and clean garments and shapes. Rowan is promoting two stories to reflect these trends for Spring/Summer 2015, 'Daydream' and 'Relic'. Daydream is a collection of soft feminine knits inspired by a delicate romantic mood, whereas Relic is a carefree collection of casual knits, inspired by the past with colours and textures found within ancient cultures. The 'Essentials' collection takes a new direction this season by concentrating on another major trend, Denim, whilst still promoting the key shapes of the season.

Freia Super Bulky

Freia Super Bulky meets all Beth's knitting requirements. Big needles. Changes colours. She cast on a cowl last night and finished it before going to bed.
We modified a cowl pattern that I made up in Rasta to make sure that we used every inch of yarn. We had a bit left over but not a lot. The pattern is ready - now we're waiting for the yarn.
Hand Painted Super Bulky Gradient Yarn. Super soft single ply. Our process creates a strong yarn that is lofty but with very little pilling. This yarn is dreamy!
80m/87 yards on a 150gram ball
100% wool
2 stitches=1" on 12mm needles

The yarn should be arriving in the store soon. I've sent an email to Tina begging her to rush our order.
There are a few patterns on Ravelry for the yarn.
Little Imp Hat
One ball is all it takes.
Chloe Vest
You will need 4 balls for the vest. Yes balls. No winding the yarn - take it out of your bag and start knitting.

Dad and I just got back from a visit to the new house.
They have started on the bricks. I hung out the back door and leaned on the scaffolding to get this picture.
This is the tile throughout the main floor of the house. Looks like hardwood but it won't scratch. Sorry, I should have taken out the next tile down - or I should have cleaned this one. It looks scratched but it isn't, it's glue.
The tile is finished on my bathtub. And it's a big bathtub!

Picking the tile for my bathroom was one of the hardest choices for the house. I knew that I wanted grey but there wasn't a lot of grey to choose from. I picked a much more expensive tile and was good with my choice. Then on the day that we finalized everything, the builder had this tile in the show room. It was much cheaper than my original choice. Enough so that I could change my counter top to quartz from laminate.

Now it's time for football and knitting.

2015 Knitting Camp

Today was spent working on the brochure for Camp.

Date: Thursday September 17-Sunday September 20, 2015

Location: Bayview-Wildwood Resort. Why would we go anywhere else? We love the staff. We love the food. We love the location.

Pricing: That is tomorrow's job

Instructors:

We are very excited that Kate Atherley will be back.

Kate is Knitty’s Lead Technical Editor and a seasoned designer in her own right. Her Cooperative Press book Beyond Knit and Purl has been praised for its “accessible” and “refreshing” approach to helping knitters expand their skills. Her designs have been featured in Interweave’s Sockupied, UK’s Knit magazine, Creative Knitting, and a wide range of books. She’s an experienced and popular teacher, teaching at shops and conferences for 10 years. She brings to her teaching a degree in pure mathematics and an analytical mind, ensuring her students learn not just the how, but also the why.
Kim McBrien from indigodragonfly. Kim is in the US teaching right now so I stole a picture from her blog. I love her cardigan. It is a CustomFit cardigan that she designed.
Kim is a lifelong textile artist, working in contemporary basketry, surface design, knitting, spinning and embroidery, completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at York University in 1992. She has since held positions with many arts and not-for-profit organizations working for the Laidlaw Foundation, the Arts Network for Children and Youth, the Arts Council of Haliburton Highlands and as the Executive Director for both the Nathaniel Dett Chorale and Visual Art Ontario. From 2010-2013 she taught marketing and portfolio presentation at Haliburton School of the Arts – Fleming College before launching her own business, Indigodragonfly, a textile arts retailer. Now she continues to teach and produces knitwear designs and hand dyed yarn known for rich, multifaceted colours and humourous names.
Beth and I will be teaching a workshop as well. Sort of tag team. It's a cool technique and we are sure that those taking the class will love it.

Workshops: To be determined. I'm waiting for Kate and Kim to return from New York City so that we can discuss the best classes to offer.

Fingers crossed that it will be completed by the end of the week but let's be realistic. I'm really aiming for the beginning of next week.

Fiona Ellis has a new pattern out. What a beauty!! Meet Milonga
With patterning that dances this playful asymmetric crew neck cardigan is fun to knit and to wear. Left front, back & sleeves worked in simple rib patterning that transitions into zig-zag cable & eyelet patterning. Right front working in St st.
Fiona used Mrs. Crosby Steamer Trunk in the colour Spicy Habenero.

You can purchase the pattern on two different websites
Ravelry
Patternfish

When you're thinking of Fiona, don't forget about her Re-Gathering Intentions - also knit in Mrs. Crosby Steamer Trunk.

“Well, dear hearts, isn’t this the most perfect sweater to take on your travels to fun places? Mrs Crosby loves to play and so the designs using her yarns reflect this. This mock turtleneck, asymmetric cabled sweater has playful I-cord ties that give the impression that the cables spilling out of the fabric…going on their own little adventure maybe.”“It’s fun to knit as well as wear. The pattern is suitable for a knitter new to cables, as it contains only 3 simple very easily learned cable crosses.”

Steamer Trunk is 100% wool but when knit and blocked, it almost feels like cotton. The yarn is perfect for cables and textured work.

Thank you to Fiona for bringing out these amazing patterns. Thank you to Fiona for giving me a blog post tonight :)

Mr. Canpar came with three huge boxes this afternoon. Spring Sirdar arrived. I started unpacking and hope to finish tomorrow. Beth also came with some madelinetosh (four huge boxes) from storage. We need to get the storage unit cleaned out because a huge tosh order is coming in a few weeks. The store is going to be popping at the seams soon.

Mini Skeins

We received a happy box from Dream in Color today. More Classy Mini Skeins to knit the Technicolor Cowl.
With its 100% superwash merino base and just the right amount of twist, Classy is the quintessential worsted-weight yarn. The fiber content, combined with our unique dyeing process, gives Classy its deep and lushly-shaded tones, while the plied texture lends crisp stitch definition to everything from lace to cables.

Lynn and I spent some time making up kits. I know that you aren't supposed to be proud of yourself but I must say that I put together some great colour combinations. Totally different than kits that we made in the past. It was hard to walk out of the store without one of the kits. Maybe my weekend knitting :)

The basket of food for the Food Drive is starting to fill.

National Sweater Day

From the WWF website...
Since 2010, over a million Canadians have participated in National Sweater Day. Be sure to follow our blog for tips and stories as fellow knit-clad Canadians celebrate across the country.
National Sweater Day is a fun way to learn about the importance of saving energy, and inspired you to use less heat all winter. Heating accounts for 80% of residential energy use in Canada, and is a significant source of emissions. If all Canadians lowered their thermostats by just 2 degrees Celsius this winter, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 4 megatons – equivalent to shutting down a 600 mega watt coal-fired power station.
This morning Beth and I went through the new house.

The tile in my shower is finished.
The floor is down. They just finished it and were trying to wash it when we came in. Hence the footprints in the next picture.

 Going up the stairs.

What happens when you forget to bring knitting to work?
I cast on another CustomFit cardigan. Bella Lino from Classic Elite held double. This is the same cardigan that I wore at TNNA and I love it.

Cathy dropped by this morning wearing her Techincolor Cowl. She says that it is one of her favourite cowls to wear.

She didn't want her picture taken so I promised to cut off her head. I'm bad at taking pictures but not that bad - it was planned :)

We picked out colours for her to knit another one. I can't wait to see it finished.

Rebecca and her husband were in with cans for the food drive. 48 cans of soup and 10 juice boxes. She is very serious about winning! Thank you for the awesome donation.

Thank you to Dalia and Michael for the huge basket of cans. It was the end of the day and I didn't get a picture but everyone is taking this seriously. Thanks!!

What have I been working on? I'm finishing up an Auburn Wave that has been almost finished for a while.
Yarn: Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Silk Single - 2 skeins in Botanical. The cool thing about Zen Yarn Gardens is that their yarns are made and dyed in Canada.

Remember, for every project that you finish you get to start two new ones. Yes, you can quote me on that :)

I've been knitting with yarn from Zen Yarn Garden and I'm excited about new colours that I saw at TNNA. Here are some of the great colours coming soon in Serenity Glitter Sock
Serenity Glitter Sock: 80% Superwash Merino/10% Cashmere/10% Sparkling Nylon

 Atlantis

 Coast Guard
 Crocus
 Eclipse
 Hypnotic
 Lake Mist
 Mahogany
 Mambo
 Marooned
 Moody
 Sienna
Vixen

Two skeins of Serenity Glitter Sock will make the Plank Stole. One skein will make a scarf version. When I went to Ravelry to get a link to the pattern I found a link to a video on 5 different ways to wear the Plank Stole.

Of course I did some searching on Ravelry. Roxanne (from Zen Yarn Garden) knit a great shawl. She said that I could use her pictures as long as I gave credit to Gail Zucker - she took the awesome photos.
Pattern: Point of View (purchased on Ravelry)

Worked sideways, this asymmetrical-triangle shawl is shaped with short rows. It features seed stitch sections in a contrasting color.
You’ll need about 400 yds for the main color and about 260 for the contrasting color.
Finished Measurements: 61” wide (across top edge), 22” deep

Quick, finish up a few of the projects that you have hidden under the couch so you can start something new when the yarn arrives. :)

Snow

My morning drive. It was snowing like crazy in Ancaster. There was at least 2cm of snow on the ground when I got to the store. Wilson Street is a parking lot because the highway is a parking lot.

That picture was taken at 9:30. It's now 10:40 and the snow has stopped and the sun is out. Come on weather. Make up your mind. Snow or not but don't keep changing all day.

I haven't been paying too much attention to what is happening outside - it's 11:40 and snowing again. What a crazy day. At least I (and hopefully you) don't live on the east coast of the US. They are getting ready for one heck of a storm. Think of the knitting we could accomplish if we were snowed in for a few days.

To get you thinking about spring, here are the pretty new colours that Lorna's Laces is bringing out in a few weeks.

I'm home from work. I ducked out an hour early. The snow is still coming down in Ancaster and the roads are not very nice. Glad I made it home while it was still light out. It's knitting time. I started a new series yesterday on Netflix - Bones. Not too much thinking. Great knitting TV. I'm almost finished another project. Hopefully tonight.

If you are out on the roads, please be safe.

Spring Cleaning

There are many new yarns coming for spring. Small problem - we need room in the store. The solution - we're marking down some bulky yarns.

The Thick 'n' Thin feature of the yarn gives the knitted fabric a unique textured finish, made from 100% wool this fashion yarn is ideal for winter accessories, but will equally add definition to any knitted sweater.
Regular $9.99 a ball

Sale $6.99 a ball

See what we have in stock - don't delay because once it's sold we won't have any more until next fall.

A free pattern from Rowan - Lassan
Knit this accessory cowl, available as a free pattern to download. Designed by Heike Kruessel using the beautiful yarn Thick 'n' Thin (wool), this ribbed cowl can be knitted as either a narrow or wide version.
Keep checking back - we have more yarns to clear out.

Speaking of new yarn
The yarn is called Degrade.
100% wool made in Italy
120m on a 200gram skein
$29.99

I quickly made a cowl over the weekend.
One skein and 15mm needles. We put a twist in the cowl for a different look. The pattern will be written up tonight and we will give it to you with the purchase of a skein of Degrade.

I'm almost finished another shawl. Very close. Lynn is actually casting it off right now. Why? To make her sit down and rest for a minute. She's been on the go since 10am and won't sit down unless you make her. The second reason - I'm teaching her a new cast off.

Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off as explained by Ysolda Teague - watch the video. A great edge for a shawl - it is stretchy so when you block the shawl you don't have a cast off edge that is pulled too tight. Lynn has almost finished the cast off and exclaimed that she has enjoyed doing it. It doesn't take any more time than a regular cast off.
Pattern: Auburn Wave
Yarn: 2 skeins of Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Silk Single
Needles: 4mm
Remember my Resolution
-I am going to knit 4 garments this year
-every month I am going to finish a project that has been started and sitting around the house

Auburn Wave is the second project that I finished in January so I'm holding it over until February :)

Oh yeah - a finished project so I get to start something new. I'm waiting a few days for a box to arrive from Prism.

April will be here before we know it

Mark your calendars. It's almost time for the Knitter's Frolic. Now we need to start planning what we'll be bringing to the show.

Pattern: Cold Snap (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: 3 balls of Zara Plus for the middle size

Pattern: Goldfish Hat (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: tosh sock
I'd like to show some of my knitting but the past few days have been spent on accounting. UGH!! Thankfully it's almost done and I can get the needles out again.

I brought out my Classic Elite Come Together kit this morning. As I was knitting away I remembered the great pictures that I took at TNNA.
The kit is 6 balls of Silky Alpaca Lace that you wind together into one ball.. You can make this great scarf plus a hat or a small cowl from the kit.

Mr. Canpar brought in a box with Malabrigo Sock. I fell in love with the colour Pocion which means a new project is going to be started tonight.
Pattern: Ley Lines from joji purchased on Ravelry

Beth finished a project last night.
Another checkerboard cowl, this time knit in one skein of madelinetosh home (the colour is mandala) on 10mm needles. I wish that you could feel the cowl, it is so soft and squishy. Perfect for the yucky weather we are having today.

We're making more room. In stock Soakboxes are on sale.

It's a busy TV night so I just wound a skein of Malabrigo sock to start my new project. Grey's Anatomy. How to Get Away With Murder. Top Chef. LOTS OF KNITTING!!!

The chore last night was to work on accounting. That lasted until Grey's Anatomy started when I turned off the computer and started my new project. I knit for an hour and then went back to the numbers. The accounting is finished so now it's full steam ahead on the knitting. I did a bit in the store today and I love the colour. The pattern is well written and easy to follow.

Here is Joji's description of the shawl
It is amazing how our focus shifts in the most random ways and, like happened with this design, it often takes us to a very creative place when we let it wander around. The ribbing in this shawl will let your imagination and attention wander around too while you work its very simple instructions, and will leave you amazed at the direction your knitting took when you bind off the last remaining stitch.

I wasn't sure what my post was going to be about tonight when an email came in from Churchmouse Yarns. They have a new free pattern.

Alexandra's Airplane Scarf
To get the pattern, go to Churchmouse's website and add the free PDF to your cart. Then checkout.
Yes, this is knit in Kidsilk Haze Stripe. If you don't want multi-colours, you can use Kidsilk Haze.
From the Churchmouse website
When Boston-based author and long-time Churchmouse friend Alexandra Dane was recently in Seattle attending a writing retreat, she stopped by the shop wearing a scarf that turned our heads.
It was just the kind of thing we love—simple, simple, simple, and all about the color. Just a sheer tube of lace-weight mohair pressed flat, it’s the kind of scarf we’ll knit again and again.
We used two skeins of Kidsilk Haze Stripe for this glorious version, shown here in color 361 Chiaroscuro. It’s the perfect accessory to work on or to wear for cross-country flights (hence the name) and we’re so grateful that Alex shared it with all of us.
We have lots of Kidsilk Haze Stripe in stock. Yes, I love this yarn.

Late this afternoon Ms. UPS came in with lots of boxes from Rowan. Could it be the new magazine? I don't know. I was busy with customers so we'll open the boxes first thing in the morning.

I try to blog everyday but I couldn't bring myself to sit down and write yesterday. We were jammed in the store all day. That's a very good thing but boy was I tired at 4:30. We were so busy that we didn't get the spring Rowan yarns unpacked.

Cotton Lustre
Cotton Lustre is an interesting blend of cotton, linen and modal which gives it a wonderful drape with a soft handle. This yarn incorporates the essential summer shades and knits on 6mm needles making it perfect for a quick summer knits. The colour palette incorporates the essential summer shades.

The yarn and magazine are in the store.

Unfortunately Rowan Magazine #57 wasn't in the box. It should be here sometime this week.

There was some knitting and TV last night. Ley Lines is growing. It will grow more this afternoon.

It looks like we are in for a lot of snow this afternoon and into tomorrow morning. The Weather Network says that if the winds blow a certain way we could see 25-35cm. If we see that much snow, the store will not be open tomorrow. I'll update Facebook and Twitter in the morning with an update if I go in or if I'm at home knitting.
