New yarn for fall

The early post today was an announcement so it really doesn't count. Here is the real blog post.

Mr. Canada Post brought in a huge box from Mountain Colors. We have many, many kits for the Perspectives Cowl that I am knitting.
Yarn: Mountain Colors Twizzle
Pattern: Perspectives Cowl - purchased on Ravelry -  it is not in the package of yarn
This lovely textured cowl features a slip stitch pattern and utilizes the gradient mini skeins in the Mountain Colors perspectives kit to create stripes and subtle color changes for a fun to knit cowl! The pattern is quite easy but enough to keep you interested and changes every few rounds.

The box also had Perspective kits in Crazyfoot - a fingering weight yarn. We've knit the kit up into Circular Perspectives - pattern purchased on Ravelry.
Circular Perspectives infinity scarf / cowl showcases the new Mountain Colors Perspectives yarn kit that includes 5 gradient colors of Crazyfoot yarn. To get maximum enjoyment from Mountain Colors Perspectives yarn, I’ve designed this pattern to use up almost every bit of all 5 mini-skein colors.

The stitch pattern is a simple, pleasingly reversible, lace to knit in the round. You can wear your creation as a single casually looped long scarf, or double-looped as a snugly cowl.
The Crazyfoot kits will work great for Magmatic Boom.

Yesterday I mentioned the box that came from Prism. There was a pattern in the box that I am very excited about. Actually, the yarn is in my bag but there wasn't time to cast on last night.
An easy to knit cowl in Stuff. If you aren't familiar with Stuff, it's really cool yarn.
Wild Stuff is composed of 30-40 different hand dyed, gauge coordinated yarns. They are tied together end to end by hand, so that as you knit the texture and colors are always changing. Wild Stuff has a lot of eyelash, metallic, and other highly textured yarns. Wild Stuff has some wool, kid mohair and other animal fibers in it. Like all Stuffs, a larger needle can be used for a more open fabric in ponchos, wraps and scarves. We have successfully worked on as large as a #11 needle.
Cool Stuff™ is composed of 30-40 different hand dyed, gauge coordinated yarns. They are tied together end to end by hand, so that as you knit the texture and colors are always changing. Cool Stuff™ has moderate eyelash, metallic, and other highly textured yarns. Cool Stuff™ has no wool, mohair or other animal fibers in it. Like all Stuffs™ , a larger needle can be used for a more open fabric in ponchos, wraps and scarves. We have successfully worked on as large as a #11 needle.
Layers Stuff is similar in composition to Wild Stuff, but has no eyelash. You will find plenty of texture and glitz, plus a generous 300 yards in a full skein or 150 yds in a half skein. Our family of Stuff remains the standard toward which other hand tied yarns strive. The colors are glorious; combining our carefully chosen palettes allows you to create with Stuff in a way you never could before.
You need a full skein of Stuff and 8mm needles for the cowl. I'll show pictures when I get some knit.

Stuff

I cast on the Stuff cowl last night and am a bit obsessed. I want to keep going to see what the next fiber is going to be. I'm using Wild Stuff and the colour is new - Winterfell. There are many different hand dyed yarns knotted together. When you get to a knot you keep knitting. GASP! My motto is 'no knots in knitting' except when you're knitting with Stuff. Some tails will fall to the right side, some will fall to the wrong side. I leave them where they are. You can sew them in if you want but they are tied really tight and you don't have to worry about them coming apart.
When I say mindless knitting, this is it. 8mm needles. K4, P4. Around and around.

I'm at home right now waiting for a few of the carpenters who work for my dad. They are coming to do important work around the house. Toilet paper holders. Towel bars. We didn't have the builder put these in because they were so cheap and not good looking. They are also hanging our curtain rods and the blinds in my bathroom.

I took my mom to the hair dresser this morning and stopped at the store on the way home. Mr. Canada Post had dropped off a box from Lynda

Pattern: Gyre (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: 2 skeins of Mrs. Crosby Satchel in the colour Wild Huckleberry

The mirror finally made it onto the wall. The job tomorrow is to open up the boxes of our art and start getting it hung. Now I have errands and then some knitting. It's been calling me from my table and I haven't been able to touch it all day.

Alpaca Merino DK

Rowan has gone all out this fall with their new yarns.

Alpaca Merino DK
Baby Alpaca, Super Fine Alpaca, Extra Fine Merino Wool and Nylon, blended together creating a super soft extra lightweight yarn with the meterage of a 4ply weight. The chainette construction gives the finished fabric a beautiful soft weightless feel, to knit and wear.

A collection of wearable designs in our new super soft and super lightweight Alpaca Merino DK. The yarn is a standard DK weight but the handle is anything but standard. The collection features simple colourwork and textures as well as cable  designs,  from  quick  knit  scarves  and  hats  through  to  longer  length sweaters to cosy up in.
It's just over a week until the yarn and book will be arriving in the store.

I had every intention of writing yesterday and then it didn't happen. I was glued to the TV. The Canadian Open was very compelling. Was a Canadian going to win? David Hearn was so close. Then there was the Nascar race and the Jays game. After dinner we had Big Brother and Beach Flip.

I'm really excited about Rowan's Hemp Tweed - coming in August

A blend of 75% wool and 25% hemp, resulting in a modern tweed effect, soft to the touch yarn which is a joy to knit. Wool and hemp create 'breathable' knitted fabrics which are cool to wear in warm weather and warm in colder temperatures. Hemp fibre is resistant to stretching so does not distort with use and naturally softens with wear - hemp does not wear out it wears in!

A collection of 14 designs by Lisa Richardson for men and women using Rowan’s New Yarn ‘Hemp Tweed’.

Here are a few pictures that were supposed to be in yesterday's post.

The wind wasn't cooperating but we have 2 flags in front of the store again. One bracket was broken so Beth and I went to the flea market in Myrtle Beach to get another.
Our neighbours planted sunflowers at the beginning of summer and they are huge. I want some in our yard.
The boys were comfortable last night. They love the tile floor. It isn't soft but it is really cold to lie on.

I'm writing early because Beth and I might golf later today. We need to meet with our builder over something pretty major and then we hope to hit the course. Beth is golfing in her Club Championship this weekend and needs a bit of practice. She golfed yesterday and didn't have her A game. I think she might tell you that she didn't have her B or C game either.

More New Yarn

Mr. Canpar brought in four huge boxes of yarn this afternoon. Lots of new from Sirdar.
Baby Bamboo has four new colours.
Specially developed to be incredibly soft, gentle and smooth for Baby, this yarn is a new blend with natural bamboo and wool fibres. It will keep its quality through gentle machine washing.
There are new pattern books for babies/kids.

Sirdar Harrap Tweed is a yarn with a genuine heritage, the Sirdar company being originally founded by the Harrap brothers in 1880. It comes in a range of rich tweedy colours that have been inspired by the Yorkshire surroundings of the Sirdar head office in Wakefield. It has a beautifully soft blend of 40% Nylon, 30% Wool, 24% Acrylic and 6% Viscose. It is machine washable and incredibly versatile, making beautiful knits for women, men, children and the home – it is the perfect family yarn. Harrap Tweed is a classic double knitting yarn and will knit to all Sirdar double knitting patterns.
There is a pattern book for Harrap Tweed with designs for men, women and children. And the yarn is only $6.95 a ball.

Sylvan Chunky is a beautifully soft thick and thin yarn, with a 90% Acrylic, 10% Wool blend. It has a soft and silky slubby texture and comes in a range of fashionable, smokey, ombre colours. Sylvan Chunky is machine washable and is a standard chunky yarn, knitting to all Sirdar chunky patterns. It is the perfect yarn for creating fashionable winter knits for men and women.

The book for this yarn hasn't arrived yet but I can tell you that the designs look great. At $6.95 a ball it will work great for scarves and cowls for Christmas gifts.

Mom and dad are almost due for a new vehicle so Beth and I went car shopping last night.
It was hard to walk by the Corvette - my parents would look great in it. Actually, who cares. I'd look great in it. :)

We picked out a nice vehicle and the dealership let us take it to show them. I liked driving the crossover that we chose - so much that I will be getting one next year when my lease is up. The sports car has been fun until it snows.

New colours of Sirdar Baby Crofter DK arrived yesterday.

Sirdar Snuggly Baby Crofter Dk is a gorgeously soft yarn with an incredible Fair Isle colour effect that appears as you knit. Inspired by the gentlest colours of the Scotland Highlands, Snuggly Baby Crofter Dk is the same wonderfully soft blend of 55% nylon and 45% acrylic as Snuggly Dk, and is machine washable and easy care. This yarn will also knit to all Sirdar double knitting baby patterns.
There is a new book for the Baby Crofter which includes this pattern. Oh my goodness. It is too cute. We ordered in the Snowflake DK in white because I have a feeling a few people are going to want to make this.

I'm at home today - it's accounting day. Really, the worst day of the month.

I'm sitting at the kitchen island and keep getting up to do chores. The dishwasher. The garbage and recycling. I'm tempted to wash the kitchen floor but that might be pushing things :)

We needed to get some parcels out so I'm now in the store. A huge box arrived from Friea Handpaint Yarns. We have new colours in Bulky and Fingering.
Dirty Hippie
is a fun color in saturated jewel tones. The color is slightly deeper and more muted than other "rainbow" colorways becoming a somewhat unexpected and much more sophisticated blend. This Ombré yarn transitions from cerulean to garnet, red into an overly saturated dark orange and finally to a quiet and deep mustard.
2 balls of Bulky Dirty Hippie came home with me and Beth took them right away. She found a pattern on Ravelry and is casting on. Pictures tomorrow.
Ember
is an elegant combination of ultra-bright colors with more muted hues. The passionate red and deep coral balance out the darkening shades of masculine taupe and pewter creating a very wearable palette. This colorway would look just as good for a simple accessory as it would used in a larger more complex sweater or coat.
Lucas
is both the creation and namesake of one of our guest designers, Sara Lucas. Inspired by the verdant nature of her hometown of Corvallis in Oregon, Sara selected shades of greens and deep brown-blacks with some lighter accents to create this gorgeous unisex colorway. Our aim is to create colorways that withstand the whims of fashion and folly and this color is no different, these classic colors are truly timeless.
Nautilus
is a beautiful delicate palette in shades of porcelain pink and tans grounded by a dark and engulfing navy . This colorway is universally flattering and both sophisticated and sweet - we see it being used in so many different patterns.
I'm thinking that we might use Nautilus Fingering for another Magmatic Boom.

Now I need to get back to my accounting. Send good thoughts my way :)

Beth spent a few minutes on Ravelry last night and couldn't decide what to knit in the Freia Bulky. I suggested the Fernanda Circular Scarf.

From the designer Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton
This scarf is a simple yet dramatic way to add interest to your outfit whether worn around your shoulders over a turtleneck or as outerwear.
The Super Bulky from Freia Yarns is perfect for showcasing my DropStitch Openwork™ technique!
It's a cool technique to make the squares. There were a few 'issues' at the start. One was that Beth and I were reading the pattern wrong. If one line had been added to the instructions, it would have saved taking back stitches. I have emailed the designer about this as well as what I think is a typo. The **** to show a repeat should have been moved up one line in the pattern. Beth is still new so she follows the pattern exactly as it says. I'm trying to get her to work a bit more intuitively - if you think it should be done one way then you could be right - go with your gut.

I opened my knitting bag this morning and Lynn spotted my Stuff cowl. She pulled it out and tried it on. She didn't pull any further for fear of taking the stitches off my needles. I wasn't sure if it would fit nicely over the shoulders should you choose to wear it this way, but it will.

I finished my accounting this morning so now I can get back to knitting. You don't want to keep the tax man waiting.

I just talked with the Rowan supplier and I was wrong on the date for the new magazine. I thought it was going to be here on August 1 to sell. It is being shipped from the US on Tuesday and we should have it late Friday afternoon. I will update as the boxes get closer to Canada.

Diana finished another Magmatic Boom for the store.
Pattern: Magmatic Boom (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: 2 balls of Rowan Kidsilk Haze Stripe - yarn held double
It has a totally different look in the mohair/silk blend. And I like it :)

I received an email this morning with an invoice for my Rowan Fall 2015 order. The yarn is being packed and we should have it next Friday afternoon. Rowan is known for their awesome colours and this fall is not going to disappoint.

There are two new colours in Alpaca Colour.
Made with 100% baby alpaca, Rowan Alpaca Colour is a soft and durable DK knitting yarn. The soft, subtle blend of colours in each shade allows the beauty of the yarn to show through and is ideal for textured knitting stitches.

Brushed Fleece was popular last winter and there are very pretty colours coming this fall.
Brushed Fleece is a super soft blend of extra fine merino wool and baby alpaca. The yarn has a soft marl colour effect and is quick to knit making it very wearable, warm and lightweight.

Felted Tweed had beautiful colours but the new Granite and Amethyst are amazing.
Felted Tweed is a blend of merino wool, alpaca and viscose and knits to a DK weight.  The yarn has a beautiful tweed effect perfect for fairisles, striping and other colour work and the rustic colour palette makes this yarn a firm favourite with our designers.

Who doesn't love Kidsilk Haze? We will have five new colours.
Our ever popular Kidsilk Haze is a beautiful and versatile fine yarn made from a blend of super kid mohair and silk.

Today's post is a public service announcement. If you don't read the pattern correctly, you won't have a finished product that looks like the picture.

I read the pattern as
Rounds 97-99: Purl
Rounds 98-100: Knit (I'm reading my post before I publish it and until now didn't even notice that the numbers overlapped - that might have been the first clue that I was wrong)

I purled 3 rows and then started on a knit row. Wait a minute. This doesn't happen anywhere else in the cowl. A few bad words went through my head.

The pattern really read

Rounds 97 & 99: Purl
Rounds 98 & 100: Knit

Do I rip out or fix as I work? I hate to rip out so I'm fixing as I work row 100. The left side is wrong and the right side is correct. It makes a big difference.

I'm happy with the cowl and hope to finish it tomorrow. After row 100 I get to cast off. It might be a morning job when I'm a bit more awake. OBVIOUSLY!!!

Surprise

Rowan has new patterns available for purchase on Ravelry. It was a surprise for me. I didn't know that there would be more patterns than what we will be seeing in the new magazine.

These are knit in the new yarns for fall.

A collection of eleven exclusive designs using some of our new autumn winter yarns; Super Fine Merino Dk and Aran; Big Wool Silk, Hemp Tweed and Alpaca Merino DK.
Designs include a deep v neck ribbed sweater, statement crocheted necklace and a stunning, slouchy shrug perfect for the autmn winter season.

You can purchase the patterns individually at $7.00 each, or buy all eleven patterns as an entire collection here for $18.00.

This deep v-neck cabled tunic features set-in cuffed sleeves and waist-shaping for a feminine fit. Knitted in Rowan Hemp Tweed, the tunic is seamed to provide strength for long-lasting wear, while the ribbing allows the garment to keep its shape over slacks, skirts, or jeans.
Designed by Marie Wallin, this oversized lace shrug in Rowan Big Wool Silk is knitted in 2 pieces, seamed at the back to provide strength for long-lasting wear, and ribbed at the cuffs and hem for a durable edge. Using large needles and the Big Wool Silk lets the knitter create a quick garment with shine and drape.

Knitted in Rowan Hemp Tweed, this classic seamed pullover has a fresh look with a contrasting colorway in the ribbing of its neckline, cuffs, and hem. The dropped shoulder sleeves have set in shaping to lessen bulk at the underarms, and thus a more tailored fit.
This v-neck oversized cardigan features cabled panels that not only blend the set in pockets to create a smooth line, but also have more cables that twist along the sleeve cuffs and front opening. Knitted in Rowan Alpaca Merino DK, the seamed cardigan has dropped shoulder cap sleeves and is designed to be closed with a decorative kilt or shawl pin.
Featuring texture on the saddle shoulders and sleeves, this funnel neck pullover has a straight waist above its ribbed hemline. Knitted in Rowan Alpaca Merino DK, the seamed garment has slight raglan shaping which accents the textured sleeve and shoulder pattern.

Beth's cowl is growing. I love the colour. Actually, I'm jealous that I let her knit with it. The pattern is the Fernanda Circular Scarf and takes two balls of Freia Bulky. There was an error in the pattern that has been corrected by the designer, Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton.

My needles didn't move today. It was clean the house day. Two bathrooms. The kitchen. Washing linens. Not the funnest way to spend a holiday Monday. Oh yeah, there was a nap too which made up for the start of my day.

Back to work tomorrow which means it's bed time soon.

There are 8 new colours of Cashmerino Baby.

From Debbie
Baby Cashmerino is one of my most popular yarns. Soft and gentle against the skin but machine washable, it is the perfect fibre for babies and children.
Yarn Weight: Lightweight DK
Blend: 55% Wool 33% Acrylic 12% Cashmere
Meterage: 125m
Needles: 3.25mm (US3)
Tension: 25 stitches and 34 rows to 10cm/4in square

And 5 new colours of Cashmerino Aran
Yarn Weight: Aran
Blend: 55% Wool 33% Acrylic 12% Cashmere
Meterage: 90m
Needles: 5mm (US8)
Tension: 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm/4in square

Most of the yarn is put away but something whispered in my ear that we should put the Cashmerino Baby in numerical order. That is our job tomorrow. The store will be in a bit of a mess temporarily as we pull all the yarn off but when done we'll have a pretty display. And it will be much easier to find colours.

Our good friend Kate Atherley has a new sock book and we should have it in the store very soon. I was told beginning of August. And it is the beginning of August so please hurry. Winter is coming and you don't want to have cold feet.
Whether you knit them toe-up or top-down, getting just the right fit on hand knit socks can be a major challenge! In Custom Socks, Kate Atherley sets out to teach knitters of all levels the skills and tools they need to understand sock fit, and to knit a pair of socks that fit properly. She calls on her years of experience as Knitty's Managing Technical Editor, where she has edited hundreds of sock patterns, to share this information in a way that is easy to understand with patterns that inspire.

So go ahead and treat yourself to these 15 original sock patterns that are easily customizable and work with any needle configuration. Your feet will thank you!

Did you know that August is our Birthday Month? The store opened in August 1987. I'd like to give you the exact day but it was so long ago that I can't remember.

Knitting Camp is nothing like the camp you attended as a kid.  At Knitting Camp you get to chose your day's activities.  Go to class, sleep in, take a hike - totally up to you.  Super comfy accommodations with someone else making your bed.  And the food is incredible and seemingly endless.

The one way it is like camp though, is that you will make great new friends who you will look forward to seeing year after year.

Another cowl has been finished.

Pattern: Perspectives Cowl (pattern purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Mountain Colors Twizzle Perspectives Kit

I saw this in the Mountain Colors group on Ravelry today - from the same designer as the Perspectives Cowl.

Mari’s designs have been seen in the pages of Interweave Knits, Knitscene, Knit.Purl, Knitty, Twist Collective, and more in addition to self publishing on Ravelry. She also designed the popular Perspective Cowl using Mountain Colors Perspectives Twizzle.
The pattern uses one Mountain Colors Perspectives Crazyfoot Kit and and will result in a cowl that’s approximately 26.5” around and 16” tall, a lovely lightweight cowl that can be worn in many seasons.
The pattern is perfect for the intermediate beginner who is familiar with knitting in the round and would like to learn a few new stitches!
The pattern must be purchased through Ravelry. All pattern updates will be sent each week through Ravelry.

Super Quick Project

I started a quick project yesterday afternoon. The back is finished and the front has been cast on. You gotta love knitting with 12mm needles. I hope to finish while watching Big Brother and Beach Flip tonight.

What am I making? It is a vest from Debbie Bliss' new book for Lara.
The yarn is 58% wool and 42% alpaca. Super soft and it isn't heavy.

Seeing the yarn knit up on my knitting chair makes me think that I might need to do a throw in it.

We brought out the iRobot today to try it out. It is amazing to watch it go. You would think it was drunk the way it moves around the room but it ends up in every corner. Roko's spot is against the island, under our chairs. At first he was afraid of the vacuum but after a bit he didn't care. Until it touched him on the paw. If looks could kill!
We sweep and sweep the tile floor but the iRobot really picked up the dog hair. I'm going to try in upstairs on the carpet tomorrow while I'm at home working.

Now back to my knitting. I'd like to be sewing together tomorrow - two shoulder seams and two side seams. No picking up for armbands or a neck band. It really doesn't get any better than that.

Rowan

There is a new pattern available to purchase on Ravelry from Sarah Hatton knit in Rowan's Fine Art. You need 2 skeins of one colour and 1 skein of the accent.

Pattern: Sybilla

The fall Rowan should finally be arriving tomorrow. We had a few issues with UPS last week. No one can give me an answer as to what went wrong but thankfully the boxes have been found.

The new Big Wool Silk is in the shipment.

Adding a little bit more luxury to Rowan Big Wool, this yarn is 70% wool and 30% silk, giving a beautiful sheen to the knitted fibre. Soft to touch and luxurious to wear this is a little bit extra for all lovers of Big Wool.
There is a dedicated book for the yarn but what I'm thinking is one of Martin Storey's scarves. You can purchase these patterns on Ravelry...
The Celtic Cabled Scarf takes 5 balls.
The Tangle Scarf takes 8 balls.
The Lace Cabled Scarf takes 4 balls.

This is so sad but I'm heading to bed at 8:30. I don't know why but I am so tired. My vest didn't get finished (almost) but I can't keep my eyes open enough to knit. I'll be having happy dreams of the 8 boxes arriving from Rowan tomorrow. Wait - that could be nightmares. Where is it going to fit??
