Hello Myrtle Beach

I just got home from a nice dinner with mom and dad. They wanted me to come over for a bit but I am so tired. It's been a long day. I was up early because you never know how long it will take crossing the border. There was no line up and I was really early for my flight. I did a bit of window shopping and then lunch at Panera Bread. I was still really early so I got some knitting in at the airport.
My ride. The flight was good. A bit bumpy but I had my knitting.
Dad picked me up in the PT Cruiser - with the top down. It was really nice here. On the way to our houses you pass Chick-Fil-A. They have the best milk shakes. It is hard for my dad to drive by without stopping for one :) Of course I had one too.
When flying Spirit you are allowed to carry on one personal item like a purse or small back pack (unless you want to pay for a real carry on bag like a small suitcase with wheels). I carry an Offhand Designs bag. It was extremely full. Almost bursting at the seams. I think that Larissa could use it for an ad. Laptop. Wallet. Phone. Medications. iPad. Headphones (mine are Bose so they take up room). And then two knitting projects. My Doodler needs two balls. But I think I will get that finished tomorrow so I needed something else. Elbow River came on the trip. That was my plane knitting because I have that pattern memorized.

Now it's time to knit for a bit (there is a Law and Order marathon on with Benjamin Bratt) and then a good nights sleep.

Rainy Sunday

Today was all about knitting. Elbow River is growing. I had hoped to get a picture outside in the bright sun shine. Not today. It was cold and rainy in Myrtle Beach. The weather was much nicer in Southern Ontario.
The front step was the driest place that I could find. The pattern is well written and easy to follow. It's actually pretty easy to memorize. I like how the colours are coming out.

I'm at my house now watching TV and working on The Doodler. I'd like to say that I will show pretty outside pictures tomorrow but it's supposed to rain all day. Yuck!

I forgot to show pictures of something I started before I left. It's sitting on the front table if you are visiting the store in the next few days.
This is the Simple Rules Cowl (pattern free on Ravelry). The yarn is Bamboozle from King Cole.

48% Bamboo
44% Wool
8% Acrylic

140 Metres (approx)
153 Yards (approx)

The cowl takes one skein and is knit on 6mm, 40cm circular needles.
The yarn is $15.95 a skein. A great idea for Christmas gifts. Or maybe you need to make something for a charity bazaar. Quick, easy and not too expensive.

The store website has been down all day and I hope it will be back up in the morning. If you've emailed me in the last 24 hours, I'm not ignoring you. Emails aren't coming through. Actually, emails have been intermittent all week so please resend tomorrow.

Now back to my knitting. I'm on the fourth wedge and hope to have all wedges done by the time I post tomorrow.

Lazy Monday

I woke up to rain. And chilly. Not a day to inspire you to do anything. I went to my parents and dad made bacon and eggs for breakfast. Them we visited a new store, Gander Mountain, which just opened near our houses.
The store was mainly hunting and fishing. I'm not into hunting so we bypassed half the store. I'm not really into fishing either. Dad likes Bass Pro Shops better because they have boats and a tank of fish. I think that we could used some of our old, out of date yarns to make outfits like this.
Then I headed to the mall to pick up some things for mom. Beth asked me to go to Kay Jewellers to pick up this season's bears. Trey and Travis.
Kay Jewelers is raising money for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This year you can choose between two plush teddy bears Trey & Travis which retail for $13.99 each. 100% of all proceeds will be donated to St. Jude. So stop in for more info & help a child in need. It's well worth it and just in time for Back to School. Join in to help fight childhood cancer.

All profits no less than $7 of the purchase price of each "Trey" and "Travis", will be donated to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.
The Doodler is slowly growing. It would be further along except for the afternoon nap, dinner our, grocery shopping for mom and dad and then doing a tosh order (I received an email today with the new colours for spring.) Oh yeah, there has been time trying to get email working again on my computer, iPhone and iPad now that the website is back up.

We might see the sun tomorrow so I can get a better picture. The stripes aren't bold but I'm carrying on. Things could change on Friday when the next clue comes out but I really like the teal/brown main colour.

Now I'm going to sign off and sit for a while.

Chesterfield

Fiona Ellis does it again. What an amazing cardigan in Mrs. Crosby Steamer Trunk. The pattern is called Chesterfield and you can purchase it on Ravelry...
Fiona is known for her amazing cables and she doesn't disappoint with her latest design.

The Doodler is growing. I'm on the ninth wedge. Stephen's patterns are well written and I highly recommend knitting one of his designs if you haven't already.

It is sunnier here today. Not really bright but it's trying.

It's much later in the day and I took a spin in the PT Cruiser with the top down. It was nice to play in the sun. Then I went to my parents to call XM radio. The satellite on their new car was out. That took some doing but it's working now. Companies try to make things hard. It's a good thing I was here to make the call because my parents would have hung up and gone without it until they got home for Beth and I to make the call. We had dinner out at one of their regular restaurants. They know all the staff. The house clean up has started. Towels are in the wash. Garbage is out. Dishwasher is running. Now it's knitting time. There is another Law and Order marathon. I've seen most episodes so I don't need to pay too much attention to the TV.

Camelot

Last week I talked about Camelot, a new yarn from Classic Elite. There is a free cardigan pattern in this weeks Web-Letter.
From the designer, Susan Mills
Self-striping yarns are nothing new but we're really excited about our newest yarn Camelot. Camelot takes self striping to a whole new level! Each colorway contains 10 distinct dyed-in-the-wool shades. The dyed fiber is blended as it is spun resulting in a single ply with multiple colors striping that also gives a marled effect.

This week's cardigan pattern is worked side to side, in two halves joined at center back, with the stripes running in flattering vertical lines. Feather and fan stitch adds interest on the sleeves.

Mark your calendars for the Toronto Knitters Frolic. The marketplace is open on Saturday and there will be workshops offered Saturday and Sunday. I will share more information as it becomes available.

My flight home was very non-eventful. We left on time and landed early. It took 15 minutes from the wheels touching down to my starting the car. It is so great to fly out of Niagara Falls.

Now it's time to get to my knitting. I really mismanaged my time in Myrtle Beach. I should have been working on the Doodler at the start of my trip to make sure that I finished the first clue. Then I could have gone to Elbow River. I worked backwards and now I'm only on the 12th wedge of the mystery shawl. I have to get going tonight and tomorrow but I don't think I can knit that fast.

Dream On!

The November Dream Club is here. Yes, it's part way through November but I needed other yarns from Dream in Color and made the decision to ship everything together. Dream in Color has moved from Chicago to Arizona which has doubled the shipping costs. The more we can get into a box, the better.
This month, we have a beautifully textured hat from designer Hanna Maciejewska. The hat features some amazing interplay between cables and a fisherman’s rib, and will keep you looking stylish this fall.
This month, we are sending a limited edition year, which is not a yarn we regularly stock! How exciting! It is “Jilly with Silk” and is 85% superwash merino and 15% silk. Each skein is 400 yards.

We also received some Classy with Cashmere.

Kiss Me Kate

Evening Flame
An exquisite blend of luxury fibers and a refined twist unite to make Classy with Cashmere an exceptional yarn indeed. 20% cashmere lends the yarn an irresistible softness, while 10% nylon and 70% superwash merino make Classy with Cashmere a superb choice for well-loved baby garments and special occasion accessories alike.
I used two skeins of Kiss Me Kate to make this easy to knit, easy to wear cowl.

A customer just left who purchased balls of Noro to make tea cozies. What a great idea for Christmas gifts. She's using the Churchmouse Yarns pattern - Ribbed and Ruffled Tea Cozies which you can purchase on Ravelry...
A little ‘sweater’ for your teapot keeps the water hotter while you brew and while you sip. The pretty ruffled version was designed for our LYS Tour several years ago while the plain fellow is a perennial favorite. Choose a traditional tweed or a modern self-striping yarn in a color that won’t show the drips. What a thoughtful gift.

Besides being darn cute, a tea cozy is a very practical item. It’ll insulate your teapot so your water stays at the optimum steeping temperature longer. Then it’ll keep your brew warm ’til you’re ready for the next cup.

Also included is the ‘How to Brew a Decent Cup of Tea’ tutorial. If you follow a few guidelines, you can easily serve up a satisfying cuppa, time after time.

Any worsted weight yarn will work

Today was a big day at our house. We finally have a railing on our deck. The original plan was for a railing with glass panels. Our glass man didn't think that they could attach it properly without tearing up the deck so we went to plan B. Which turned into Plan C. I think this is plan D. I'm happy with how it turned out. Very simple and will keep the dogs on the deck. Until now we've had patio furniture around the edges. That hasn't gone well. The wind blows them to the ground and it can be windy in our back yard. Next Friday we get our proper artificial grass. Our fence is the last thing but I think we are waiting until the spring for that.

Now it's time to get back to work. The dining room table is covered in yarn so that I can make up kits. More on that tomorrow. Then knitting and watching the football game. I'm still on the 13th wedge of The Doodler. Unfortunately it isn't knitting itself.

Beach Roses

We received more Classy mini skeins in yesterday's shipment from Dream in Color so Beth and I made up kits last night for the Technicolor Cowl.
The dining room table works very well for spreading out yarn.

While playing on Ravelry this morning, I found a new pattern by Laura Aylor.

Beach Roses is purchased on Ravelry and if you hurry there is a discount.
This modified triangle shawl is mostly smooth stockinette with a pretty star stitch transition band between each color. Extra increases on wrong-side rows make the triangle shape shallower and eliminate the pre-blocking diamond shape often seen with stockinette triangles, helping it to stay in place on your shoulders. Leftovers are used to make a lush fringe.
I have knit Laura's patterns and they are well written and easy to follow.
The shawl is knit in fingering weight and I would suggest tosh merino light. This will give you the largest choice of colours. Maybe too large :)

I'm home from work and it's knitting time. The Amazing Race is taping. CNN was on the TV but I had to change the channel for a bit. The news is so upsetting. My prayers go out to the people in Paris.

The Knitter's Book of Knowledge

Debbie Bliss is one of the world's most respected knitwear designers and authors—and The Knitter's Book of Knowledge is the distillation of her decades of experience into one indispensable reference. With information on everything from needles and yarns to tensioning and casting on, basic stitches to buttonholes and beading, cabling and entrelac to finishing embellishments, it's the ultimate guide every knitter needs.
Mr. UPS brought me a surprise yesterday - Debbie's new book. The publisher sent an email asking if I would like to receive a copy to review. Of course I wanted to see it.
This essential addition to every knitter’s shelf includes:
·        Information on popular types, weights, and fibers of yarn.
·        Tips on understanding the language and terminology of written patterns.
·        Shaping techniques that range in trickiness and produce various results.
·        A variety of methods for color and texture embellishments.
·        Instructions for designing your own knits.
·        Troubleshooting when you’ve made an error.
The book is very comprehensive. 320 pages to be exact.

I asked Lynn to look at the book and give me her comments.
She had me at the Table of Contents. I was very impressed. The book looks comprehensive with many, many diagrams.
Copies of the book will be in the store in the next few weeks. Email or call and I will reserve a copy for you.

We are going to do a draw and one lucky winner will receive a copy. Leave a comment below with your Ravelry name or your first name, last initial and province or state. We will draw for the winner on Sunday, November 22, 2015. All comments must be received by noon EST on the 22nd.  The draw is open to residents of Canada and the US.

Not sure how to leave a comment?

Go to the bottom of the post and you will see something like this. Click on No Comments (or it could say 10 comments) and then another screen will pop up for you.

Beth started her first Multi-Directional scarf (pattern free on Ravelry) before I went to Myrtle Beach. She is almost at the final triangle which requires something a bit different. Not hard but she wasn't sure so she set that scarf aside and started another.

Left Scarf (the first one started): Classic Elite Camelot on 5mm needles
Right Scarf: Classic Elite Liberty on 5mm needles

I had another blog post written but I need to save it for a few days. I wrote about something that we are selling in the store and then I realized that we needed more stock. Orders have been placed and I'll post when it arrives.

While we're talking about stripes...
If you're looking for an easy scarf that looks great, take a look at the Noro Striped Scarf from BrooklynTweed. The pattern is free on Ravelry and is knit in two colours of Noro Silk Garden - 2 balls of each colour. This is my scarf from many years ago. The colours are discontinued but I'll find you something equally as nice.

Want some colour inspiration? There are over 4000 scarves pictured on Ravelry knit in Silk Garden - here is the link...

My mystery knit a long is growing. I'm on the 17th (and last) wedge. Beth keeps reminding me that I need to pick up the pace. The next clue is printed and I hope to start it tomorrow. I'm not sure how much knitting will happen tonight. Homeland is taping. That show requires a lot of concentration. We also started watching Quantico. I'm undecided but have watched 6 episodes so I'm in for the season. The show jumps forwards and backwards in time so you need to pay attention to it as well.

Now I need to find a file on my laptop. I looked earlier and couldn't find it so I thought it was on the upstairs computer. Not there either. Back to the laptop.

Clue #1. I'm almost there.
I hope to say goodbye to this clue very soon. I'm ready for #2.
I was taking a spin around the Rowan website and found patterns for socks. Six patterns and they are free!!!
These decorative eyelets in this ladies’ sock pattern look tricky, but are deliciously simple with its written instructions. This toe-up pattern also incorporates a gusset and short-row turned heel flap to create a closer-fitting sock.

Twisted stitches are used to create texture in this cuff-down ladies mid-calf sock. A classic heel flap and short row gusset compliment the detailed pattern.

Look what arrived today. New books from Noro.
The designs are knit in Kureyon, Silk Garden and Silk Garden Solo.

These designs are knit in Shinryoku.

70% wool
30% silk

We also received a new yarn.
Rainbow Roll from Noro is 100% wool roving dyed in beautiful, self-striping colorways! This roving is great for felting, spinning, and weaving and can also be used as is for knitting and crocheting!

We hooked another one - Lynn is finishing her Log Cabin Afghan. She has to join the strips and then work around the whole afghan in black. It was a beautiful day to go outside for pictures. Can it stay like this until January?

The afghan is knit in Noro Kureyon and the pattern is free.

Simple Rules

Today is all about the simple. Mr. Canada Post brought in a box from Lynda with three cowls. I can only show two right now. The third is set aside until our next order arrives from Dream in Color.

I started my day at the dentist and called the store when I was finished. Lynn was so excited. She had opened the box from Lynda and freaked over this cowl.
Pattern: Ombre Cowl Hood (the pattern is free on Ravelry)
Yarn: 3 balls of Rowan Kidsilk Haze (we used 605, 642 and 600)
Needles: 5mm, 60cm circular
This is a very simple stockinette-in-the-round pattern. Yarn is held double throughout, and colors are alternated to create ombre stripes.
We're making up kits in the store and now I want to knit one.

Lynda also knit the Coors Cowl.
Pattern: Coors Cowl (free from Classic Elite)
Yarn: 5 skeins of Chateau (70% baby alpaca + 30% bamboo = supersoft and super light)
Needles: 8mm, 80cm

This cowl is simple to knit. Cast on and work in seed stitch (knit 1, purl 1). You work until the first colour is finished and then join in the next. No counting. You don't even worry about the beginning of your row. Just change colours when your yarn runs out.

My easy cowl is finished - Lynn cast it off this morning.
Pattern: The Simple Rules Cowl (pattern free on Ravelry)
Yarn: one skein King Cole Bamboozle
Needles: 6mm, 40cm circular

What an easy knit and it looks great. As Lynn was casting off I remembered that we have some Bamboo Bloom Handpaints in the store - it's the same yarn. Now there are more colours for the cowl.
At $15.95 a skein, I don't think that the yarn will last very long.

Ombre Hood Cowl

Lynn and I have a small competition going. Who can knit their Ombre Cowl Hood quicker? (Of course you knew that I would cast on and make one. Rowan Kidsilk Haze worked double strand - I'm always in for that). We had fun picking out colours. Actually it wasn't that easy because Rowan's Kidsilk Haze has so many beautiful colours.
I started with 641 Blackcurrent and now I'm working with 589 Magestic. 671 Peacock will be my last colour. The pictures above are the colour swatches that I took from Rowan's website. The picture below was taken on my dining room table. These are truer colours. There is a small lesson here - the colours online aren't always exactly as they look in real life. We try our best. If you want to order from the store, I am always willing to take a real picture for you and email it to show you how the colour looks.

Now I'm off to knit more. Lynn is upset with me. She was doing errands for her dad today and didn't get to knit. Not my problem :)

Fantastic Knitting Bags

We have another new sample in the store.
Pattern: Guernsey Wrap by Jared Flood (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Rowan Hemp Tweed

My shawl was knit in 9 balls. I wanted it to be longer so we added in more pattern rows. If you knit to the pattern length then you will need 7 balls.
A blend of 75% wool and 25% hemp, resulting in a modern tweed effect, soft to the touch yarn which is a joy to knit. Wool and hemp create 'breathable' knitted fabrics which are cool to wear in warm weather and warm in colder temperatures. Hemp fibre is resistant to stretching so does not distort with use and naturally softens with wear - hemp does not wear out it wears in!

We have these great, colourful, inexpensive knitting bags in the store. They look like laminated paper and are super, super strong. I've been carrying one to work with my laptop, knitting and wallet in it. It is standing up great. Lynn carries one with her knitting and loves the bag.

A large knitting tote with an outside clear pocket- perfect for storing your pattern in! Includes an inside pocket and has a zipper closure. Measures: 36 x 13 x 36cm. $27.
An extra large knitting bag for those ambitious knitting projects! With pockets both inside and out, there is plenty of room to tuck away snacks, notions, your wallet and phone. Zipper closure with handles. Measures: 52 x 23 x 33cm. $35.

This bag is big enough to hold an afghan or sweater quantity of yarn.

A medium sized knitting bag with a clear outside pocket. Includes inside pocket and zipper closure. Measures: 35 x 12 x 28cm
Don't wait too long though. The supplier has limited stock. Once a bag is sold out I don't know if we can get more stock.

Just before I was about to hit Publish we received a shipment of more bags. There is a brand new colour in the large bag.

I'd like to say that it was knitting time but we received lots of Cascade 220 today and then a huge box came from Rowan. It is filled with Felted Tweed and Hemp Tweed. We've got our work cut out for us if the store is going to be in order before we go home.

Architexture

Cathy dropped by yesterday afternoon with a new shawl. It is amazing!
Pattern: Architexture (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: 2 skeins of Mrs. Crosby Train Case
Architexture is a rectangular scarf with pointed ends. Fully reversible, it is a collection of textures that enhance one another ~ made all the more striking because they are knitted on the bias. The frequent changes in stitch pattern keep the project engaging from beginning to end.

Although the pattern calls for fingering-weight yarn, sport and dk-weight yarns would work beautifully too. So choose a lovely solid or semi-solid yarn that will show off the variety of textures, and enjoy yourself as this elegant scarf takes shape in your hands.
I should have gone outside yesterday to take pictures when we had a bit of sun. It was snowing this morning so I was rushing.
I made it to the next colour on my Ombre Hood Cowl. It is really addictive because you want to get to the next colour. I hope to finish the cowl tonight or tomorrow morning so I can get back to my Doodler. I'm on the second clue and for some reason I've made two mistakes which means taking out rows. The clue isn't hard and I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing. I'll be smarter when I get back to it.

To make life a bit easier - here is the list of the designers...

We had a cute little girl in the store yesterday wearing the Baa-Ble Hat (pattern free on Ravelry). She didn't want her picture taken so I snapped this when she wasn't paying attention.
Her mom knit the hat in Cascade 220.

I'm into the last colour of the Ombre Hood Cowl.
I worked on it last night but set it aside this morning and worked on my Doodler. I figured it was better to work on the cables when I was wide awake since I've been making mistakes.
Now I'm on a mission. I want to start the third clue and see how my next colour looks.

I won the challenge!

My Ombre Cowl Hood was cast off yesterday and I soaked it in Soak last night. Now it's lying out in the sewing room to dry.
What is it: Soak is modern laundry care. Clean up with Soak’s eco-friendly formulation. Developed to be as easy on the environment as it is on your clothes, it’s the no-rinse clean you trust and love.

Soak is perfect for your laciest lingerie, softest sweaters, baby clothes, quilts, swimwear, workout wear and all the laundry you love. love it. wear it. soak it.

How it works: Just Soak and squeeze. No need to rinse. Lay knits flat to dry. Wash sets (like lingerie) together. Test fabric for color-fastness.

made with plant derived and renewable ingredients
biodegradable, phosphate-free, dye-free, sulphate-free
safe for hand or machine washing (including HE)
Fig: Fresh-picked clean. Fig is ripened with sweet fig and lychee and crowned by dandelions.
Lynn brought her cowl in today. Her colours are awesome. Now I want to make another one. The next one might be double strand of Kidsilk Haze Stripe. Who knows what will jump into my knitting bag tomorrow.

The artificial grass is supposed to be put down in our backyard tomorrow. Originally it was Friday, then today. It couldn't be put down because they were missing a very important part. We are going to have a mini putting green in one corner. The cups were out of stock. I'll be up and waiting for them at 7:30. That means it's almost bed time. A few more rows on the Doodler while watching the football game.

Golfing in winter?

This was sitting at the back door when I got home tonight. Who needs a putter in the middle of winter?

I'm not sure what happened to yesterday's post. I started it on my laptop and then finished at home on the computer. I didn't close it on my laptop (my bad) and hit something this morning. I think it changed the post from my finished version to the started version. If you saw this picture yesterday, sorry. It's not on yesterday's post now so I'm showing it today.

Lynn has joined the final colour into her Ombre Cowl Hood. I love her colours and can't wait to see it finished. Now I want to do another one. I'm thinking double strand of Kidsilk Haze Stripe.

The guys were at our house very early this morning to start on the yard. They started with an outline of the putting green.
The grass on the putting green is shorter than the regular grass. Just like on the golf course.
You can see how fuzzy the main yard is.
The back yard is being mowed. They take a special machine over it which takes out the fuzziness and makes the grass look like grass. Beth was too busy this afternoon putting to get a picture of it finished. I'll try and remember to get one in the morning.

I'm going to do a few rows on The Doodler before another early night. They are coming at 7:30 tomorrow morning to put up our temporary fence. Then Beth and the dogs can move back home.

Beth and I watched Sunday night's Homeland last night and you shouldn't knit while watching that show. You need to pay attention. After she got back to my parents I sent her a text saying that I messed up my knitting and had to rip out 4 rows. This was her response.
I need to get the cabled section finished and move on quickly or it might go in a bag in the corner because I am sick of ripping out. I'm just joking. Kind of.

Diana stopped by last night with a new shawl for the store.
Pattern: Rosa Rosae (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: SweetGeorgia Party of Five Tough Love Sock kit
Rosa Rosae is a crescent shawlette worked from the neck down in fingering weight yarn. It can be knit in a variety of sizes making it truly adaptable.

My Ombre Cowl Hood is blocked, dried and ready for the cold weather.

There will be a new book coming next week from Rowan for Big Wool.
Big wool is a very popular yarn with designers and knitters alike. Made from soft 100% wool, Big Wool is easy to knit and produces designs with amazing cabling and stitch structure effects.
More quick to knit projects. The designs are knit on 9mm and 10mm needles.

The yard is finished and the temporary fence is up. The dogs are going to have fun running on the new grass tonight.

Boy am I dumb

I might scream. I did it again. The post was started in the store and finished at home. I came to work and reset the post. Oh my goodness. As my mom would say "Boy am I dumb!" The day started out so well. I went to the license bureau and there was no one there. No one. I thought I'd be there for an hour and it was five minutes. I came to work early to get mail orders packed. I found yarn that I couldn't find yesterday. It was going so well. I'm going to try and rewrite my post and then sit down and have a tea. Maybe I can get the day back on track.

Happy Thanksgiving to our friends south of the border. I'm celebrating with you - a turkey sandwich for lunch. The TV is on and I'm watching football and knitting.

I cast on some easy knitting last night. The Ombre Cowl Hood in double strand Kidsilk Haze Stripe. I'm using colour 361. And it's a good thing I had something mindless last night. Survivor was great. The blindsides happening at tribal council this season are awesome. Some seasons the tribal councils are so boring and you know who is going to be voted out. This time you are on the edge of your seat.
