The yarn from Frabjous Fibers is on the way to us.

Here are more kit colours that will be in the shipment.

Our dinner last night was a lot of fun. The theme of the evening was Charmed by Chocolate and Chantal.
This is carved in chocolate. Wow. There were more than a few people who wanted to start breaking off pieces.
Herbie Kuhn (the voice of the Raptors) was the auctioneer. Herbie is the MC of our dinner every September for Honduras. It was good to see him again - he is very excited about the upcoming NBA playoffs.
We had to leave early to get home to the dogs so we were only there to see her come on stage. Chantal Kreviazuk. I tried to get a picture from the back of the room as we were leaving but they didn't come out clear. She is sitting at the piano and you can see her on the screen above. What a voice.

It's been such a busy week that I haven't picked up my knitting. Maybe tonight.

Do you need some easy, mindless knitting? Take a look at the Sanibel Cowl. You are working in the round and all you need to know is knit, purl, purl 2 together and yarn over. I cast this one off last night and Lynn sewed the ends in today.
Pattern: Sanibel Cowl (free from Classic Elite)
Yarn: 2 balls of Santorini

It was so mindless that I started another one.
I need mindless this weekend. The Masters is on.

We've started to make up kits for the Frolic. I made a few for Exploration Station and then hit a bit of a wall. Every kit I made was the same colours.
All close to my shawl. I closed the store without anything exciting. When I got home I saw a picture on Twitter. Eureka.
Design Seeds is a great website that can help with colours that work together. This is Succulent Hues - image via: @mysuburbanfarm

This is Dune Tones - image via: @suertj

I've saved some different inspirational pictures and I can't wait to play with merino light tomorrow morning.

Unicorn Tails

I'm a bit obsessed with mini skeins right now. These allow you to knit something with lots of colours without having leftovers.
Pattern: Magmatic Boom (purchased on Ravelry)
The sample used 2 skeins each of antler, silver fox, rain water, dust bowl and dirty panther
The chevron stitch with elongated stitches and placed beads that zig-zag within the pattern is too much fun!

There are 30 colours in all and we have most of them in stock. A shipment of unicorn tails from madelinetosh should be arriving this week and then we'll have them all. Can't decide which ones to knit with? Why not knit Unicorn Stripes?
All 30 colours are used in this fun to wear scarf.
Pattern: Unicorn Stripes (purchased on Ravelry)
This pattern lets your create a tube scarf or cowl. You decide!

Stephen West isn't one to shy away from colour. He used the unicorn tails for an interesting scarf.
Pattern: Unicorn Parallelogram (pattern purchased on Ravelry)
Choose 20 colors of fingering weight yarn like Madelinetosh Unicorn Tails and knit this easy biased scarf. The garter stitch fabric makes this project ideal for on-the-go knitting.

There are many more patterns on Ravelry that will work great with unicorn tails.

Now it's time for some House of Cards. We've only made it through six episodes so far. I feel a late night ahead of us.

Color Play Mohair Wrap

One of my favourite all time projects is the Color Play Mohair Wrap. The pattern is from Churchmouse Yarns and the yarn is Kidsilk Haze Stripe from Rowan.

We have copies of the pattern in the store or you can purchase on Ravelry.

This colourway is Bird of Paradise.
From Churchmouse
We played with four self-striping colorways of our favorite mohair and silk blend. The colors really do mix, mingle, sweep and swirl in unexpected and wonderful ways! No two pieces will ever be alike. Stretch your color horizons by choosing even just one colorway that you wouldn't normally choose—you'll be amazed at how it plays with your favorites!
Herb Garden
Hydrangea Hedge

Pansy Patch
Royal Botanical Gardens
This was my fifth wrap. We named it Iris Garden. Yes, I'm a bit addicted to the yarn and the pattern.

From Churchmouse
Each of our original Color Play Mohair Wraps combined four colorways of Kidsilk Haze Stripe into eight different sections. We noticed that we kept falling in love with certain sections, and wanted to spend more time with those two colorways.

Intrigued, we decided to try a whole wrap using just two colors of Kidsilk Haze Stripe from the Herb Garden colorway held together throughout.

A more subtle color shifting revealed itself as we worked -- still gloriously unpredictable -- and more watercolor-like in the blending, without a noticeable beginning or end.

It's also simpler to knit, and because each skein stripes differently, each wraps final colorway is utterly unique. We're hooked!
If you'd like to create your own combination, consider stretching your color horizons by pairing one Kidsilk Haze Stripe color that you wouldn't normally pick with one that's more familiar. You'll be amazed at how the resulting combination complements your favorite colors.

The wraps luxurious size lets it envelop your neck like an oversized scarf, or grace your shoulders with plenty of length left over for a lovely vertical drape.

Either way, we think you'll love the feeling of wrapping yourself in an artful fiber palette.
This sample is Avocado and Khaki

Golden olive and willowy greens, navy, and smokey teal.

Here are a few suggestions if you want to use two colours

Lush and California Sunrise

Hot pinks and corals, tangerine, magenta, dark boysenberry, lavender and orchid purple

Vivid and Nightfall

Medium to darkest violet, turquoise, greens from grassy to olive, denim and navy.

See all the shades of Kidsilk Haze Stripe.

Why am I writing about these today? We recently received news from Rowan that Kidsilk Haze Stripe has been discontinued. If you were thinking that you'd like to make one of these beauties then you might want to act fast before the yarn is gone.

We have kits in the store and on the website.

It's Hair Day

I'm up early this morning so why not start on today's blog post. I'm going to spend a bit of time working on my accounting and then I get to visit Trish at the hair salon. It's always a happy day when you get your hair done.

Revive is another yarn that Rowan has discontinued. I love this yarn - a tweed for summer. It's also a great yarn for people who are sensitive to wool.

Pattern: Framed (free on Ravelry)
Yarn: 3 balls of Rowan Revive
Needles: 4mm
Panels of trellis lace are framed by strips of garter stitch, and the whole scarf is framed in I-cord, making clean, tailored edges.

Framed can be made with any weight yarn and in any size – it is very versatile and it’s all up to you!!

Framed is fully charted, using four charts that work logically through the pattern. There are also written instructions for each section.
What a great summer shawl.

Purelife revive is our wonderful tweed effect, fully recycled summer yarn. It has a beautiful rusticity.
Recycled Cotton: 36%
Recycled Silk: 36%
Recycled Viscose: 28%

125m/137 yards on a 50 gram ball

Beth is on her way home with dinner and then it's time to relax and knit. I did a few rows at the salon but not enough to satisfy my fingers.

Under the weather?

Pattern: Sick Day Shawl (pattern purchased on Ravelry) designed by our good friend Kate Atherley
The pictures are courtesy of Gillian Martin.
Under the weather? Need a day on the sofa? Go digging in your stash and entertain yourself with an interesting-but-not-too challenging pattern.

Only basic knitting skills required: as long as you can knit and purl and increase and decrease, you’ll be fine. It’s helpful if the decongestant you’re taking leaves your head clear enough to count stitches and rows, too.

Go digging in your stash for 400-500m heavy worsted, aran or chunky weight yarn, e.g. 2 skeins Cascade 220
Sample used 1.5 skeins Briggs & Little Regal (est 425yds) aran weight, on 5.5mm needles.

The design is entirely forgiving of messed-up stitch counts. Got the wrong number? Fix it on the following row. And it’s flexible, too, for how far you go. Got more time and yarn? Just keep working to make it bigger. Feeling better? Stop sooner.

It’s good for you, too: the knitting is interesting enough that you’ll stay put on the sofa, resting as you’re supposed to.

And next time you’re feeling under the weather, you’ve got something warm and comfy to snuggle under.
Kate calls this the Sick Day Shawl but it could also be the 'I'm in a knitting funk' shawl. Sometimes you have a project or two on the needles but they just aren't what you feel like working on. You want a new project but nothing big. And something that is pretty quick. This shawl fits the bill.

For a more summery shawl, Classic Elite Santorini would look amazing.
I'm sitting in the store writing, looking around and thinking 'that yarn would work or maybe that one or maybe that one'. I've picked out many options. I can't start the shawl right now because I have knitting to finish for the Frolic but I could be starting one very soon.

I finished another cowl in Santorini last night.
Santorini's colorways sing along the matte and shiny textures inherent in the yarn, adding vibrant color to warm-weather garments, wraps and scarves.
It happens to be a stitch pattern close to Kate's shawl. Now I really want to make the shawl in Santorini. 4-5 balls will make a great size.

Fabulous Frabjous

Mr. Canada Post brought in the box from Frabjous Fibers/Wonderland Yarns this morning. It's probably a good thing that Lynn emptied the box or I would have put five or six kits in my bag. I am in love with the colours. I think I might need to take a kit home tonight and play with the yarn. I can't sell it to you without trying it first.

We have gradient kits (that have been added to the website) ....

...as well as full skeins of yarn.

Cheshire Cat fingering weight yarn is soft and springy with a lovely sheen, and perfectly plied.
465m/512 yards per 4 oz skein
It's a very busy TV night so I should get some knitting done. Two playoff hockey games, the Jays and a very important NBA game. There is also Survivor. And if that isn't enough, Game of Homes from last night is taped.

The Elder Tree Shawl

We have a new sample in the store - thank you Lynda it looks amazing.

I sent the yarn to Lynda for a different project but after one ball she realized that we didn't have enough yarn. I thought about shawls and then it hit me. One of our favourites - The Elder Tree Shawl.

Pattern: The Elder Tree Shawl (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: 5 balls of Rowan Summerspun
Needles: 4.5mm
The Elder Tree Shawl is another lovely Fall weather leaves shawl knit in tweedy worsted weight. A perfect edition to any autumn wardrobe. It’s a simple lace knit that would be good for intermediate level knitters who are comfortable with knitting, purling, and working yarn overs.
The shawl is large and I love it. It's also very lightweight. Perfect for a summer evening.

Summerspun is a beautiful yarn in a 50% Merino Wool and 50% Cotton blend. The yarn is made by twisting a printed cotton end and a melange wool end together, resulting in a wonderful subtle striping effect. Summerspun is a joy to knit and crochet.
The yarn has been discontinued so we've made up kits for the shawl with an awesome price of $40. Once the yarn is gone we won't be able to get anymore so don't wait too long. There are nine different colours available. Something for everyone.
I didn't knit a lot last night. And then I had to rip out half of what I did this morning. The pattern calls for a double decrease. Slip 2 stitches together as if to knit, knit 1, pass the slipped stitches over. On one row I did slip 1 like a knit, knit 2 together, pass the slipped stitch over. I saw it last night and thought that I could leave it but it was bothering me. It was so noticeable. Hopefully I'll get more done tonight so that I can show tomorrow. The yarn? I started something last night with one of the Frabjous kits. It is very nice to knit with.

Now it's back to getting ready for the Frolic. It's just 2 weeks away.

Quaker Lines

We've just had the one year anniversary in our house. This awesome chair is in our loft but I haven't spent much time (OK, none) in it. Last night Beth went to bed early but I wanted to watch baseball, hockey, hockey, hockey and hockey - the NHL playoffs have started. It was a good time to try the chair.
A great view of the TV.
My shawl is growing.

I picked the Mice in the Tea colourway from Frabjous. My pattern is Quaker Lines (purchased on Ravelry)

Take a look at kgartley's shawl. She used a Frabjous kit and it caught my eye.

The yarn is very soft and I like knitting with it. I can't wait to get home and do some more rows.

I changed to the Addi Rockets and they are great. Just a bit pointier than the original addis.

The weather is nice so someone came out of hiding. It was really, really dirty so I stopped at the car wash on the way to work. Now it's shiny and ready for the nice weather. It wasn't quite warm enough today to have the top down but it will be on Sunday.
A newsletter went out this morning and there was a link missing that I didn't catch before I hit send. I talked about the discontinued Rowan yarns but my link was wrong. Here is the correct link...

Amalfi Poncho

Happy Saturday. What a beautiful day. It was a great day to be out and about.

I love this poncho - two colours of my favourite yarn. We have a poncho theme happening for the Frolic so we made up kits today and the poncho will be on display at the show.
I won't win any photography contests with this picture - I totally cut Lynn's head off.
Pattern: Amalfi Poncho from the 2013 Fall Knitscene magazine. If you don't have the magazine, you can purchase the pattern in the Interweave Store.

Yarn: Two colours of Liberty Wool from Classic Elite

There are two sizes in the pattern. The smaller size takes 5 balls each of the two colours, the larger size takes 7 of each colour.
Throw this basic poncho over a casual outfit for instant impact. Knit side-to-side in a long-color repeat yarn for high visibility.

Nancy took part in our last KAL and made this shawl. The last time she was in the store I asked her to bring it in so that I could get pictures. I love the colours!
Pattern: The Doodler (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Mrs. Crosby Satchel - Barn Swallow, Boston Fern, Vintage Port
It's knitting night and there are a few hockey games on. The only problem with that is changing the channel. Flipping between games means putting down my knitting. My goal is to finish the first ball of my shawl tonight. If I have enough tea I might be able to make a dent on the second ball.

Mice in the Tea

$

My goal was to have the first colour finished last night and I did it. I've been working on the second colour today. The pattern has two sections. I'm working on section one and it is very easy to memorize. When I'm almost finished with the purple I will switch to the second section. This will create the boomerang shaping.
I don't think that I can get it done in time for the Frolic but I'm going to try.

Did you know that the yarns from Frabjous Fibers are dyed and spun in the US?

There would have been more knitting today but it was so nice out that we went for a drive with the top down. Where to? DQ of course. It was an ice cream kind of day.

Then I worked on kits for the Frolic. The Technicolor Cowl. I could only do so many because there is a big shipment of mini skeins arriving on Friday. I can't wait to see the combinations that I can put together.
Now it's knitting time again. Two hockey games and a baseball game. And since I'm knitting with a deadline it's not really knitting for fun - I'm knitting for work :)

Happy Monday

I was in the store for a while today doing mail orders. While I was there Mr. Canada Post came in with two boxes. That makes for a Happy Monday.

The first box was from madelinetosh. I quickly ripped it open to see the one of a kinds merino light. You might recognize the colours. They're current but just slightly off what we normally have. Just slightly. There are no colour names on the labels - they say one of a kind.

The second box was from Cocoknits. All colours of the Knitter's Keep are back in stock.

Boxes make me happy. The warm weather makes me really happy.

Beth finished her Crazy Scarf. She enjoyed knitting it so much that she has started another one in different colours. You need two balls of Zauberball Crazy and 3.5mm circular needles. The finished scarf is 100 stitches and the new scarf will be 80 stitches. She decided that it didn't need to be quite so wide and could be longer.
My knitting hasn't progressed enough for pictures but maybe tomorrow. Go Raptors Go!!!

Denim

Today's Web-Letter from Classic Elite has an interesting pattern.
Whether for a fashion statement or just to keep your hair out of your eyes, one ball is all it takes to make this summery kerchief in one of Santorini's bright and cheerful color combinations.
Download the pattern...

We have a new book and yarn from Debbie Bliss.
I love denim and this yarn won't disappoint. It is different than the Rowan Denim. This will not shrink and it won't fade.
100% cotton
200m / 218 yards on a 100gram ball
22 stitches = 4" on 4mm needles

$15.95 a ball

We get asked a lot about cotton stretching. Here are a few tips
-go down a needle size. This will tighten up your knitting to stop the stretching
-machine wash and dry your garment. You wash your store bought cottons - your hand knits should be washed too. I put them in a lingerie bag so that they don't get caught on something in the washing machine. They go in the dryer in the bag as well. I put the dryer on for 20-30 minutes. Then I let it go cold and put it on again. Keep repeating until dry. This has worked very well for all my cotton sweaters. They don't shrink but go back to their original size.
-if you are worried about the garment shrinking in the wash, knit up a good sized swatch and measure it. Throw it in the washer and dryer and measure again.

Now it's back to packing. We're starting to fill boxes for the Frolic. This way we have a handle on the kits we need to make. It's only 11 more sleeps. Yikes.

Meadowside

Last night was a late evening. There was a good hockey game on and I wanted to make it to the next colour on my shawl. I didn't have a copy of the pattern with me and I thought I was making a mistake. I looked on Ravelry and I'm doing the pattern correctly. Thank goodness. Of course I checked to see if there were any new patterns. Meadowside is new and I sent a message to the designer right away. Brian replied and gave me permission to use his pictures.
This top down shawl uses two different coloured balls of Debbie Bliss Rialto Luxury Sock yarn. Starting with a garter tab cast on, striped garter stitch sections separate a simple eyelet pattern.
Pattern: Meadowside (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn used: Debbie Bliss Rialto Luxury sock yarn
1 ball 07 Weather
1 ball 03 New Orleans

The colour possibilities are endless. We're going to have fun with this one.

The weather is beautiful so my friend and I went outside for pictures of my knitting. I wish that you could touch the screen and feel the yarn. It is super soft and has a lot of drape.

My parents are home from Myrtle Beach so we have flags again. Unfortunately the wind is blowing and one is caught. I thought about sitting and waiting for it to come loose but there was work to do.
I'm very afraid to write this but I think we are ready for the Frolic. There are two shipments arriving next week and we'll have to make up a few kits but other than that we're good to go.

Toronto Knitters Frolic

Here is today's public service announcement. Don't knit while watching Survivor. You need to pay attention to the TV (especially when there is a blindside happening) which causes you to do crazy things with your knitting. There is a decrease at the center of every right side row on my shawl. I missed it twice. I tried to drop the stitches down but then I had loose stitches. YUCK. I pulled out the needle, ripped out 5 rows and started again. The moral of the story - I knit a lot last night but you didn't get very far. I'm hoping for better results tonight.

It's almost Frolic time. We will be in Kobayashi Hall - booth 10. The same corner as last year and the year before...

Saturday April 30
9-4:30

Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre
6 Garamond Court
Toronto, ON M3C 1Z5
venue telephone (416) 441-2345

Here are some of my tips if this is your first time heading to the show.

- trust me, there is lots of yarn. If you don't like lines or crowds, wait until noon to come. There will still be lots for you to see. If booths sell out of something, most are more than willing to ship it to you after the show
- bring lunch with you. Then you don't have to stand in line.
- The Science Centre is very close to the Frolic. You can send your family for an outing and it will let you shop for a while.
- wear something that you have knit. It's always fun to see completed projects.
- if you see something you like, mark down the booth you saw it in. I can't tell you how many times we get frantic people at the end of the day because they forgot where they saw something
- go through your Ravelry library and make notes of yarn that you are interested in. If there is a certain pattern, print that pattern and bring it with you. Also bring information on the yarn. What it's made of. Tension. Yardage. That will make it easier for me and other booths to help you substitute. When you come in the store I can do it on the computer but we have limited Internet access at the show.
- please have patience.
- the Frolic isn't just for knitters. It is put on by a knitting guild - hence the name. Crocheters please come to the show. There is lots of fabulous yarns that you and your hooks will have fun working with.

If you have questions about the Frolic, here is their FAQ page.

If you haven't been to the Frolic - here are some pictures from last year's booth. We hope this will inspire you to get into the car and go for a drive next Saturday. You won't believe the yarn, needles, knitting bags, yarn bowls, kits and finished garments that you will see. It's also great walking around and seeing what everyone is wearing. Knitters are friendly people. If you see something you like, ask the person about the pattern. We like to brag about what we knit.

Now I need to switch computers and finish my tax return. Talk about putting someone in a bad mood.

Descant

There is a new pattern on Ravelry that caught my eye. It is called Descant and can be purchased on Ravelry.
Descant is the fifth voice in a traditional SATB choir. It’s a line typically higher than soprano voices, added for another layer of depth to a piece. This Descant is knit with five different colors of yarn, from the Lorna’s Laces String Quintet set.

Finished Size: 16” depth, 64” wingspan

Yarn: Lorna’s Laces String Quintet 535 yards String Quintet is composed of five 107-yard mini skeins of Shepherd Sock (80% Superwash merino wool/20% Nylon), 435 yards/100 grams; sample worked in “Trumpet” Colorway.

Needles: 40” circular needle, size 7 US (4.5mm), or size to obtain gauge.
I love ithate it love it when new patterns are released on Ravelry. Why hate it? Because I don't knit fast enough. Or maybe the problem is that I need sleep. If I could only knit from midnight to 4am everyday and still work. I love it because there are so many pattern options available now.

String Quintet kits come in amazing colours.

Sorry - you are going to hear lots about the Frolic for the next week. It's one of the biggest and best knitting shows in the area. I highly recommend you attend. Even if you aren't looking for more yarn the inspiration you will get is amazing. You will drive home and pull out a project to get it finished.
It's time to hit Publish and get back to work. Lynn and I are redressing mannequins. They have new summer clothes.

One Way Tee

Lynn came to work today wearing her One Way Tee. The pattern is from the Spring 2015 Interweave magazine. If you don't have the magazine at home you can purchase the pattern on Ravelry.
Even the simplest lace accent can make a sweater pop. The One Way Tee incorporates a simple arrowhead lace into body, sleeves, and shoulder saddles to create bold lines.
Sarah also knit the Tee. They both used Mrs. Crosby Carpet Bag - it was their Frolic sweater last year. It is great for layering. Wear in the summer with a tank underneath or in the winter with a long sleeved shirt.

This is my house right now. There are mini skeins from Dream in Color all over my kitchen.
I'm having fun putting together kits for the Technicolor Cowl. We have colours that we've never had before.

Tomorrow I'm heading to Toronto to Open Houses at two of my suppliers. It's always fun to see the yarns that will be coming out for fall. I should have lots of pictures to share when I get home.

Blue Nude

I was supposed to head to Toronto today to see the new yarns for fall. I didn't have a good nights sleep and wasn't up for the drive. Instead I spent the day at home making up kits and knitting.
Yay. I'm at the fourth colour. I don't think the shawl will be finished by Saturday but it will be at the show so that everyone can feel the awesome yarn.

There is a new colour coming from Zen Yarn Garden. This is a special colour and once it is sold we won't be able to get anymore. The yarn should be here mid - May.
The twenty fourth offering in our ART WALK Series features a painting by Pablo Picasso entitled "Blue Nude". From one medium to the next, artists express their use of colour. Inspired by our chosen art piece, our dyer has successfully captured the excitement and complexity of the painting.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), a twentieth century Grand Master who co-founded Cubism, was only 20 years old when his friend’s tragic death resulted in the subdued “Blue Nude. His “Blue Period” artworks, rendered in somber blues and greens, were part of an astounding 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures he produced in his lifetime. Hauntingly beautiful and exquisitely composed, “Blue Nude” is one of Picasso’s best-selling pieces, and a testament to his ability to express complex emotions with one simple shade. [quoted from Art.com]

We have geese in the back yard and Melo loves to stand on the deck and talk to them. We've come to the realization that if the geese are around then the coyotes aren't.
Now back to my knitting. I'm flipping between hockey and baseball. It's been a great sports day.

What month is it?

The NHL playoffs = lots of knitting time. And a game that goes into double overtime is great. Here is a much better picture of the shawl so far. I really need to get a friend at home who will model for me.
The knitting time has been cut a bit because I've been working on my tax return. It's almost done. Then power knitting for Saturday.

My goodness it is cold outside. I'm not sure what month it is. I'm looking at the Weather Network on my phone and it says -2 for tomorrow night. WHAT??? At least it looks like a nice weekend. There is nothing worse than packing/unpacking for a show in the rain.

The Jays are on and I need to get back to the taxes. I want to do another hours worth of work before the Chicago/St. Louis game starts.
