Fall is coming

My dad surprised me when I got to work this morning. Fall flags are flying.

I've been wandering around the store to see the new yarns and colours that arrived last week. There are 8 new shades of Noro Kureyon.
From top left - 359, 362, 366 and 367
From top left - 368 369, 371, 374
New colours of Kureyon means that I can share Cathy's awesome pictures of her Log Cabin Afghan. You need 20 balls of Kureyon (Cathy used 25 to make it bigger) and 4 skeins of Cascade 220 for the border. There is no sewing in the afghan. The squares are knit together. It is a great project if you are waiting for your kids at their after school events. You only need one ball and a pair of 5mm needles to make a square.
I knit the afghan and it is a lot of fun. The great thing is you are finished the ball before you are bored with the colour. You also get to knit with colours you might not normally want to use.
The pattern is free....
Now I'm inspired to get back to my second afghan. There are seven squares finished and I pulled a ball of 359 to start on number eight.

Ley Lines

My Auburn Wave in Jilly with Cashmere is growing. I really enjoying knitting with a single ply yarn. This got me thinking of another project that I knit in single ply but haven't shown finished pictures. I had this shawl in the fashion show at Camp and took pictures yesterday afternoon.

Pattern: Ley Lines (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Silk Single

I used three skeins for my shawl but I made it bigger than the pattern called for. You can make it in two skeins but you need to be careful. Your cast off is gradual and worked over many rows. If you do too many rows before you start then you will run out. Hence, take three skeins, make it a bit bigger and there won't be any worries.

The shawl can be knit in any fingering weight yarn. The possibilities are endless but here are a few suggestions
-tosh merino light
-Mrs. Crosby Satchel
-Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock
-Dream in Color Jilly
-Dream in Color Everlasting Sock
-Dream in Color Smooshy with Cashmere
-Malabrigo Sock
-Malabrio Mechita
-Manos Alegria
-Zen Yarn Garden Serenity 20
-Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Glitter

From the designer - Joji Locatelli
It is amazing how our focus shifts in the most random ways and, like happened with this design, it often takes us to a very creative place when we let it wander around. The ribbing in this shawl will let your imagination and attention wander around too while you work its very simple instructions, and will leave you amazed at the direction your knitting took when you bind off the last remaining stitch.

There wasn't much knitting today. Beth was golfing so it was me and the dogs. They aren't very good at changing the channels on the TV for me. What a busy day. NFL. Blue Jays. Nascar. Golf. And a nap too. Now it's time to sit and get a bit of knitting accomplished.

Bay View Mittens

It isn't here yet but the cold weather will be coming. Our very good friend Fiona Ellis designed a new pair of mittens. We debuted the mittens for Fiona at Knitting Camp. This her second pair of Camp mittens (Sparrow Lake were the first).

These fabulous fair isle mittens are knit out of Mrs. Crosby Steamer Trunk. Steamer Trunk is 100% wool but when blocked it almost feels like cotton. They will make your hands very happy.
Pattern: Bay View Mittens (purchased on Ravelry)
You need one skein each of two colours for the mittens. But there will be leftovers. Colour B takes a whole skein for the mittens but you only need half a ball of colour A. This makes for some fun. After your first pair are finished, you can use the leftover contrast colour with a different main colour for a second pair. Keep them for yourself or give them as a gift.
See all the colours of Steamer Trunk... Not sure which two to put together. No problem. I love putting together colour combinations.

The Festival is going to be here before we know it.

Saturday October 17 9am-5pm
Woodstock Fairgrounds
The Woodstock Fleece Festival is an annual event that invites fibre artists and others to join together in an atmosphere of appreciation, learning and camaraderie. The show will incorporate workshops and demonstrations from top instructors.  Exhibition booths will be selling everything from raw fibre to quality finished goods.  It is also a great place to have lunch!!!
Visit the Fleece Festival website for more information about the vendors and the workshops being offered...

Here are a few pictures from last year's booth. It's good for me to look at them because then I know what we took. I try to take different yarns, kits and sample garments every year.

It's a great day that is a bit more relaxed than some of the other shows. I actually have time to talk to customers in Woodstock. Bring your family too. There is a farmers market and there will be animals at the show. Alpacas. Sheep. Rabbits. And who knows what else.

The Royale interchangeable needles set will make for a wonderful gift this season, presented in a specially designed box with pearly effect. The set contains 9 pairs of our ever-popular laminated birch wood interchangeable needles in sizes US 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10.5, 11, four colour coded cords in lengths of 24” (green), 32” (orange - 2) & 40” (red) and a set of cord connectors. Each interchangeable needle is made from the colourful wood used for Dreamz needles in a striking new striped pattern with shiny brass tips adorning the ends of the needles. Each size comes in its own unique colour making it easy to identify each size. The unique combination of wood and metal gives a refined look to the needles and also provides an incomparable knitting experience.
The Royale Interchangeable Needle Set should be in the store mid-October. These sets are a limited edition and will go fast. Get your set on order and don't be disappointed.

For some reason they decided that it was necessary to pour the garage floor in the house across the road at 7 this morning. Needless to say, I was up early. It's almost 9pm and I'm heading to bed. The Jays aren't playing tonight so there isn't a need to stay up :) I can barely keep my eyes open so knitting might be a bad idea.

Log Cabin

The new colours of Noro Kureyon inspired me to find my squares and start working on the Log Cabin Afghan again. 8 and a half finished. Sixteen and a half to go. While I was searching for squares I found a part ball of Noro that wasn't Kureyon. Then I remembered it was from a cardigan that I had knit. I rooted through a few boxes and there it was. Something I could have been wearing all summer. Note to self. Next week I really need to finish unpacking. With the packing and unpacking for store events lately I haven't had the energy or desire to unpack here.
Beth had to take the dogs bed from my parents and bring it to our house. We've had a small problem here lately. The dogs think that the couch is a really big dog bed. The other night Beth sat in a chair because they were not moving.

They had their hair cut last week and it's almost impossible to tell the difference unless they are standing side by side.
I was going to write earlier but got caught up in the Jays game. Now it's time for Survivor so my post is going to be short. Currently I'm knitting on three things but two are needed for the Fleece Festival so I think that the log cabin squares need to be put in a basket for now. It's sad to put away the fun colours but they can come back out to play in a few weeks.

What will we buy tonight??

Tonight is our annual dinner to raise money for Honduras. My dad loves his trips and especially loves meeting the kids. All money raised tonight goes directly to Honduras. There are no administration expenses. Everyone who goes on a trip pays their own way. None of the money from tonight pays travel expenses. It is a great cause and we are so happy to help out.

I'm writing now because it's a long evening and there won't be time later to write. There is a silent auction and a live auction and we always come home with some great stuff. Dad's paying :)

I talked about the new needle set coming from Knitter's Pride. Here is a picture of the awesome box it will be coming in.
I love it!

Rowan has a new collection of Christmas garments.
A collection of six Christmas themed knits for him and her. Designs range from a simple, cosy buttoned scarf to stunning intricate fairisles.

See the collection on Ravelry...

There is also a beautiful free pattern on Rowan's website...
Knit this stunning fairisle slipover, the member’s exclusive free pattern for September 2015. Designed by Marie Wallin and worked in Rowan Tweed and Colourspun this intricate colourwork design would be suitable for the more experienced knitter. Note that the crochet hook is only used to make the tie cord.
Now I need to get a bit of work accomplished before heading home. I need to figure out what I'm going to wear. And then I'll probably have to iron something. Luckily our family is known as 'the sweater family' so I can get away with wearing a sweater or shawl.

Buttons

We just received a shipment of great buttons. Here is a small sample of the many colours and sizes.
These rainbow buttons are perfect for any kid's sweater or garment. Small in size, but big on colour, no crafter should be without a few of these little gems stashed in their button box! Buttons measure 14mm in diameter.

There are adult buttons as well.
These large, beautiful, classic buttons made of plastic (making them easy to care for!) come in a range of colours! Each button measures 45mm in diameter.

These large, textured buttons would be the perfect addition to any cool weather coat, sweater or accessories. With the look of marble or stone, they are classic in their style. Buttons measure 44mm in diameter.

The charity dinner last night went very well. The silent auction is always fun. I got a frying pan. Laugh but we need one at our house. I also got a carrot cake. I'd be happier if it was at my house but somehow it ended up at my parents. Good planning by my dad. In the live auction Beth won 4 tickets to see the Buffalo Sabres play.

My post was really lacking so I went on the search for some free patterns for you. These are from Manos Del Uruguay and use Fino.
Elegant and refined, Fino combines the softness of merino wool with the lustre of silk in a lightweight yarn that’s perfect for heirloom accessories or luxurious garments. Fino features a new dye process that yields complex, subtle, tonal colors.

Limited Edition

Mrs. Crosby has been busy.
I am simply over the moon to announce the first in what I intend to be an ongoing series of such discoveries: a limited edition of a fascinating yarn, available nowhere else and never to be repeated.
May I present, please: Ombra della Sera. Evening Shadow. This intriguing, luxurious chain-ply was milled in Prato, Italy from 90% cashmere and 10% nylon for a dashing combination of softness and durability. On needles US 6-7 (4-5mm) it knits at a gauge of approximately 4.5-5 stitches to the inch. The put-up is 50 grams (approximately 110 yards) per hank
This is a very, very limited edition yarn. It should be in the store at the end of next week.
These are three special edition colours that will only be available in this yarn.

We also have on order
-Wild Huckleberry
-Hollywood Cerise
-Roasted Chestnut
-Red King Radish

Like I said. It is very limited - not all colours were available. There will be a special pattern available but I can't talk about it yet. As soon as I can, I will share pictures.

I finished knitting an infinity scarf today. I should have taken another picture so it wasn't doubled around my friend's neck but it was raining when I took this and she was complaining.

My goal is to block it tomorrow.
I used two balls of Olympia from Lana Grossa. The pattern is easy and quick to make on 9mm needles.
Make colorful projects quickly with Lana Grossa Olympia. This super bulky yarn is a machine washable blend of wool and acrylic, in a single ply. The marled colors are fantastic and is great for accessories, hats, scarves and cowls.
There are 100m on a ball and it retails for $16.95. Great for Christmas projects.
Today was crazy in the store. Cold and rainy outside means that knitting season is starting. Thanks to all who came in today - I'm sure you're having a great evening starting on a new project. Now it's time for me to get back to a project that needs to be finished for the Fleece Festival. Yikes. Why do I put myself under time constraints like this??

That's a lot of rain

They've been talking on the news about the rain in South Carolina. There has been a lot of it. At the golf course where our house is they've had 21" (no that isn't a typo) of rain.

Friends are staying in our house in Myrtle Beach. This is the first email that came in this morning. The road is a bit flooded. The water is half way up the mail box.
This is the second picture. A lady got stranded on the road beside our house. They got her out and brought her in to dry her off before her husband could get as far as he could to pick her up.
This is the third email. The front of our house. Half of our front lawn is under water. The water on the road is so deep that Jim was swimming in it. They emailed a video of him doing the front crawl down the road. Then they heard that there was a yellow house in trouble. My parent's house is yellow. Jim went a mile through the water to make sure it was okay. Thankfully it was. They just had new floors installed.
Beth and I are hosting a family get together next Monday. We figured everyone will have eaten enough turkey so we are having lasagna. Today was very productive. Three large trays and four small ones. The freezer is full and we'll have dinner food for a while.

There was a bit of knitting today but not a lot. I was busy flipping between football games.
The Reverb Shawl in a Party of Five kit from sweetgeorgia. I'm using the Rusted colourway.

The new season of Homeland starts tonight. Of course we had to order the Superchannel to watch it. I'd like to think that I'll be able to knit during it but I'm kidding myself. You have to pay a lot of attention.

New Lace Knitting

New Lace Knitting is a striking collection of 19 garment and accessory designs intended to reawaken your love of traditional lace knitting by using classic stitch patterns in fresh ways. Whether you’re creating shawls, cardigans, pullovers, or wraps, these projects show you the incredible versatility of lace: how stitch patterns change in different weights of yarn, how you can use that stitch pattern sparingly or for your whole project, and how little knitterly details make a lace project truly elegant, whether it is for every day or special occasion.
We have a new book in the store and the designs are amazing.

See all the designs on Ravelry...
The October Dream Club yarn will be arriving next week. Dream in Color is holding it to ship with yarn for the Fleece Festival.
This month we have two patterns for you. Both are fingerless mitts. The knitted version “En Plein Air” designed by Jimmy Martinez, features a strap with a button for decoration and a nice close fit, something Monet would have worn while painting “en plein air” (outdoors) on a chilly day! The crocheted version, “Water Lillies” designed by Susan Sellers, features a unique chain foundation and decorative textural stitches that evoke Monet’s famous painting of the same name
The yarn is Everlasting DK, 100% superwash merino wool. 250m (275 yards) on a 100gram skein. If you aren't into fingerless gloves, the yarn would work great for the Squish Me Cap (pattern purchased on Ravelry).
Beth loves the Squish Me Cap and has knit in many times. This one is in Zara Print Melange from Filatura Di Crosa. I have a feeling that she will want a skein of the Dream Club yarn to make another one.

The rain isn't stopping in Myrtle Beach. We talked to Lisa this morning and they ate Kraft Dinner and potatoes for breakfast. There isn't a lot of food left in the house. Another homeowner in the complex stopped in to check on them this morning and told them that the road by our house is the worst. If they walk to my parents, they can take my parents car out to the store. Lisa was quite excited. I'm not sure if it was food or the fact that the wine is running out. Thank goodness we have lots of games in our house so they've been amused for the past few days.

Rosa Rosae

We have a new sample for the store. Diana bought a Party of Five kit (sweetgeorgia Tough Love Sock) and surprised me with this. We'll have the shawl in the store for a few weeks until Diana wants/needs it back.

Pattern: Rosa Rosae (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: sweetgeorgia Party of Five kit

The pattern does not call for colour changes. Diana bought the kit at the Knitters' Fair and then thought that this pattern would look great in multi-colours. And she was right. She knit until the first skein ran out and then joined in the next one. She continued until all the yarn was used.

The designer is Mam'zelle Flo. The lady who brought us Auburn Wave - one of my favourite patterns.
Rosa Rosae is a crescent shawlette worked from the neck down in fingering weight yarn. It can be knit in a variety of sizes making it truly adaptable.

The Party of Five kits should be arriving from BC on Thursday.

My knitting is growing. Not fast but I'm plugging away. The darn rows are getting longer :)
While I was outside taking pictures, I took out Exploration Station. I'm not sure if I ever showed a finished picture after the ends were sewn in and it was blocked.

The dates have been set for Knitting Camp 2016.

We will be going to Bayview-Wildwood on Thursday, September 22-Sunday September, 25.

Now I need to work on our instructors.

After work, Beth and I went to Costco to pick up some things for Monday nights dinner. They had dog beds so now we have two. They posed nicely for a picture and now Roko is back on the couch and Melo is lying on the tile floor. Silly dogs.

It's knitting time. Survivor is taping. The baseball game is on. The Leafs are playing. An all round busy evening.

Lilli Pilli

Cathy knit this beautiful shawl and it's been on display in the store. I don't know why I haven't taken pictures to share until today. I think the leaves turning have inspired me.
Pattern: Lilli Pilli (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: 3 skeins of Mrs. Crosby Train Case - Spangled Cotinga, Creme Fraiche and Greystone.

Cathy knit the shawl on a 3.75mm needle. I really hope she forgets that I have it.

We still don't have a dining room/kitchen table in our house. I had a custom table priced but it was way too much money. We keep looking and can't find just the right thing. Until tonight. There is something new coming to Urban Barn and it could be the one. They have a console table in stock and a chair in the store. The table should be there next week. Now we're excited. We will be grown ups and can invite people over once we have a table. There are people (Cathy, Sarah and Jane in particular) that still haven't seen the house. In a few weeks they can come visit.

Getting ready for Festival

Today is about getting ready for the Fleece Festival. We're making up kits and starting to pack. I was in the store early today, thankfully, because the SweetGeorgia kits arrived. YAY!!!

We have new wooden crates to use in the booth. Today we've been filling them with yarn and kits.
This is Olympia from Lana Grossa - the colours are awesome. I have a better picture of my cowl. A real model is always better than one of my mannequin friends.
2 balls and 9mm, 80 cm circular needles. We'll give you the pattern with the purchase of the yarn. All you need to know is how to knit and purl. And count to six.
These kits are for Gale - the poncho that we have hanging in the store.

Sarah wore Gale at the Knitters' Fair and after the show picked up the yarn to knit herself one. Here are some comments from her blog (gogolittlered.com)
Gale is knit like two big rectangles with some arm shaping and a loose neck. It really has a sweater feel and doesn’t flow out around the body. It’s closed at the side with a button. The first thing I noticed was that it was warm without being stifling. I also felt that I could still wear a coat with it on. My big beef about ponchos is that when it gets really cold out it’s awkward to wear a coat over top.
Right now we are watching the bottom of the 9th. I want to lock the door and concentrate but Lynn won't let me.

It's much later and the fourth baseball game of the day is on. The first one didn't end well. The Jays are in trouble if they don't start hitting.

After a long day in the store it's time to say goodnight. Saturday of a long weekend can go one of two ways. The store could be totally dead because everyone is out visiting with their family or it can be crazy busy because people have come from out of town to see their family and visit while they're close.

The leaves are turning - sweater weather is coming

Fall is my favourite time of the year. My sweaters can come out of the closet. The leaves are turning and it is beautiful driving to work. I really can't get enough of the oranges, yellows, rusts, reds and greens. And it's funny, I don't wear or knit in those colours.
Many of our customers have never been in the store. They live out of town and we mail yarn to them. I like to show some of our different displays so they feel like they are in the store. Both my Ley Lines shawls are hanging and we've made up kits. All kits have three skeins because that is what I used for the shawl. You can make the shawl with two skeins if you are careful and we will be happy to take out a skein if that is what you choose. We've used different yarns for the kits.

-Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Silk Single
-Dream in Color Jilly with Cashmere
-Malabrigo Sock
-Malabrigo Mechita

There are some great colours - I'm thinking about starting another one.
We have been asked about doing another KAL (knit along) and it's in the works. Once we are back from Woodstock I will announce the details.

It's much later in the day. Beth and I had dinner out and then went grocery shopping. Beth tried to go earlier today but Saturday afternoon on a long weekend isn't really the ideal time. We're flipping between many sporting events and I realized that I hadn't finished my post. What can I add? I went to Rowan's website and here is a free pattern for you. The button detail is very interesting.

Now it's time to knit. I only have a few rows left on my shawl. Maybe tomorrow.

I hope everyone had a good day celebrating with family and/or friends. It was a quiet day at my house getting ready for tomorrow. We are hosting dinner for around 25. The lasagna is ready and I think we have everything under control.

Today has been about knitting, blocking some things for the Fleece Festival and cleaning the house. I finished my shawl and it is being pinned out after I finish writing.

I was looking for something to blog about last night and came across this.
Sirdar is bringing us these amazing patterns.

Today's post has two parts. I started writing yesterday and then more from today.
The Reverb Shawl is finished and blocked. Now someone needs to sew the ends in.

We were up very early today - the tables and chairs were delivered at 7:30. We've cleaned the house, made the beds, started dinner set up and have the food in the oven.

Thank goodness everyone enjoys sports as much as we do. There are four baseball games on today and the TV will be on during dinner. Either that or dinner will be at 7pm after the Jays game.

Now it's Tuesday afternoon. By the time everyone left last night and we did a few loads of dishes it was bed time. I really wanted to write but couldn't. It's a bit of work to feed 25 people.

Beth finished a cowl for the Fleece Festival. It is knit in one ball of Olympia from Lana Grossa. The pattern is easy (just knits, purls and slips) and quick on 9mm needles.
Pattern: Reverb Shawl (free from Sweetgeorgia)
Yarn: Party of Five CashLuxe Spark kit

It's finished with the ends sewn in and ready to take the trip to Woodstock on Friday. We have two more baseball games today so I'm going to knit for a while. My Auburn Wave in Jilly with Cashmere won't be finished for Woodstock but there is enough knit to have it on display to show how beautiful the yarn is.

We like crazy

We have a new sample for the store but it won't be in the store until next week though because it's coming to Woodstock. It will definitely add a pop of colour to the booth.

Pattern: Crazy Magic Boomerang (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: 2 balls of Noro Silk Garden Sock
Fun stitch in a boomerang shape - easy to knit and easy to wear. You can work from written instructions or a chart - whichever you prefer.

Another yarn that would great in the shawl is Freia Fingering.
Dirty Hippie would look amazing!!

I had hoped to finish my post earlier but the baseball game was crazy. On the edge of your seat, can't breath crazy. Now it's time for Survivor.

A new store sample

We have new display boxes for shows and they will make their debut in Woodstock. The merino light looks amazing in them.

We are waiting on a huge order from Dream in Color for the show. It is supposed to arrive tomorrow afternoon which means that we will be making kits tomorrow night after set up. Thank goodness we have a big kitchen island to work on. What if the shipment doesn't arrive? I've been planning for that. We have other kits just in case.

A new sample just arrived from Lynda and Lynn will be sewing on the buttons this afternoon. This changed what we will be wearing in the booth on Saturday - we're all going to be wearing ponchos. Not 70's ponchos. Really cool modern ones. And the weather is going to be great for it - cool.

The buttons are sewn on and I took Lynn outside in the rain for pictures.

Pattern: Remy Poncho (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Classic Elite Chalet
Poncho or sweater? Swoncho? Whatever you like to call it, it’s a great transition piece for fall when a coat is too much and a sweatshirt just doesn’t measure up! Great for indoors as well. This piece is a snap to knit and easy to throw on and look pulled together.

Our sample is the smallest size. Lynn says that she would like the medium to give her some more length and to make it a bit wider.

I'm home and starting on my last bit of printing. We are busy flipping between baseball and football. Hopefully my work is finished soon so that I can get to my knitting.

Set Up Day

The day went very well. We made it to Woodstock in time to beat the rain. Thankfully. It started to come down hard. The booth is ready for garments in the morning.

We're home, we've finished dinner and now we are making kits. Our shipment from Dream in Color didn't arrive until late this afternoon. There is an assembly line happening in the kitchen and we have lots of Technicolor Cowl kits for tomorrow.

Thankfully we can see the TV from the kitchen - the Jays are playing and we don't want to miss that.
