Fiona Ellis

It was a good morning today - I spent time talking on the phone with Fiona Ellis. We were discussing her classes for Camp.

Friday morning she will be teaching Jump Start your Creativity. For this class there will be a one hour discussion and then the class will break out into mini groups. Fiona will also book one on one appointments throughout the day. Late in the afternoon everyone will meet up again for a round up. Can you imagine getting to sit with Fiona, by yourself, for 30 minutes and get to ask her questions about designing or anything else you want to ask?

Saturday morning will be Creating Cables. The morning will start with a cable refresher and then students will design their own cables. Fiona will then show you how to add these cables into a non-shaped design like a throw or pillow. I'll be sitting in on this one. I'm dreaming of a thick throw (maybe Rowan Big Wool double strand) on huge needles.

Saturday afternoon we will be designing mittens. If you take the Saturday morning class, Fiona will show you how to incorporate your cables into your mittens.

Sunday morning is all about I-Cord. This is a fun class that doesn't require a lot of thinking. Student's brains can be a bit overloaded by Sunday morning.

Donations have started coming in for the Food Drive. Thank you to those who have donated so far. The gift basket is growing. I'll start showing pictures at the end of the week.
A customer came in on Saturday wearing GAP-tastic (a free pattern on Ravelry) knit in madelinetosh home. It looked awesome and balls followed me home. I'm using the new colour Undergrowth.
The GAP-tastic cowl is an easy knit you’ll want to make again and again! This fun cowl is a great beginner project for new knitters who want to practice knitting and purling, and it’s a fantastic mindless knit for experienced knitters. Either way, the GAP-tastic is a classic accessory that you’ll wear all of the time. It makes a great gift, too.
The dogs are loving this weather. It's hard to believe that it's February and not April.

National Sweater Day

Since 2010, over a million Canadians have participated in National Sweater Day at their schools, workplaces and homes. Be sure to follow our blog for tips and stories as fellow knit-clad Canadians celebrate across the country. National Sweater Day is a fun way to learn about the importance of saving energy and to inspire you to use less heat all winter. Heating accounts for 80% of residential energy use in Canada and is a significant source of emissions. If all Canadians lowered their thermostats by just 2 degrees Celsius this winter, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 4 megatons – that’s equivalent to shutting down a 600 mega watt coal-fired power station or taking nearly 700,000 cars off the road!
More on National Sweater Day....

The gift basket for the Food Drive is growing. And it isn't finished.
One ticket for each food item donated.
Or you can donate cash. 10 tickets for $10. 25 tickets for $20.
The first name drawn will win the gift basket. The next 3 names drawn will win a $50 gift certificate to the store.

My GAP-tastic cowl is 2/3 finished. My plan was to take it outside for pictures today but when I finally remembered that plan it was getting dark out. Tomorrow. Who knows, maybe I can knit the last ball tonight.

So We Call it Camp, But It’s Not Really Like Camp

This morning has been spent working on Knitting Camp. The brochure is almost finished. Sally and I are working out which workshop to offer on Sunday morning and then we're ready to take registrations.
Knitting Camp is nothing like the camp you attended as a kid. At Knitting Camp you get to choose your day’s activities. Go to class, sleep in, take a hike - totally up to you. Super comfy accommodations with someone else making your bed. And the food is incredible and seemingly endless. The one way it is like camp though, is that you will make great new friends who you will look forward to seeing year after year. Come as a group, a couple (non-knitting partners love camp too!) or on your own. Don’t worry you’ll all be included in the fun.
Don't forget that there is a Camp blog...

I'm finished and I love it. Just in time for the colder weather that is supposed to be coming.

Pattern: GAP-tastic (free on Ravelry)
Yarn: 3 skeins of madelinetosh home in the new colour undergrowth
Needles: 9mm, 80cm circular
The GAP-tastic cowl is an easy knit you’ll want to make again and again! This fun cowl is a great beginner project for new knitters who want to practice knitting and purling, and it’s a fantastic mindless knit for experienced knitters. Either way, the GAP-tastic is a classic accessory that you’ll wear all of the time. It makes a great gift, too.

Mr. Canada Post brought in a box from Mountain Colors this morning. It was full of Twizzlefoot.

There are colours that we haven't carried before and the colours that we used in our shawl.

Pattern: Kaersta Shawl (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Twizzlefoot - 2 skeins of Summerdale, 1 skein of Poppy Trail

There was enough yarn left over from the shawl that Lynn is making a pair of socks. The first sock is blue with an orange cuff, heel and toes and the other sock is opposite. We didn't think there was enough to do two blue socks. Reversing the colours makes a cool pair of socks and helps with second sock syndrome. It feels like you are starting a new pair. :)

Now to pick out some yarn to take home. One project done means that I get to start something new tonight.

Patchwork

Balls of Classic Elite Liberty followed me home last night to start the Mighty Miters.
Worked entirely in print colorways, this patchwork blanket is seamless. Mitered diamonds are worked from stitches picked up along the edges of adjacent diamonds.

The finished throw will measure 50" x 50". The pattern calls for 24 balls but you can keep adding squares if you want it to be bigger. At this time the pattern isn't available for purchase - it is free with the purchase of Liberty Wool.

It was close to 1am when the first square was finished. Beth and I started talking about how to place the colours. The pattern asks for 12 colours - 2 balls each. I'm going to do 25 colours - 1 ball each. My afghan is also going to be 9 squares bigger - taking it from a square to a rectangle.

I am going to use the 12 colours from last spring (above and all are in stock) with the 12 new colours for this spring (below). We will receive 2 new colours a month for the next 6 months. The first 4 colours should be arriving sometime next week.

The knitting is very simple. Cast on. Knit. Slip a stitch. Knit 2 together. Pick up stitches. Perfect to knit on while watching the football game on Sunday afternoon.

I was hoping to get my next square cast on today but Lynn and I counted yarn instead. We've been playing with Lorna's Laces for most of the day. The Shepherd Sock and Solemate are very neat right now. Did you know that Lorna's Laces puts dye lots on their hand dyed yarns? One of the very few companies who do this.

I'm on a roll - the first three squares diamonds are finished. I don't want to lose my mojo so I'm going to keep this short so I can get back to my needles. There is something about knitting with Liberty Wool. You need to keep going to see how the colours are going to play out.

This Offhand Designs Scottie Bag has been added to the amazing prizes for The Food Drive. The first ticket drawn will win the gift basket of yarns and patterns. The bag will be the second ticket drawn. We also have 3 - $50 gift certificates to the store.
Offhand Designs makes some of the most amazing bags!  The fabric and the hand-crafted sewing of each bag harkens back to the elegance of yester-years.  The Scottie bag is perfect to store your on the go projects and even as an overnight bag.
One ticket for each food item. You can also donate cash. 10 tickets for $10. 25 tickets for $20. Donations are being accepted until Thursday February 18.

Please help out. The Hamilton Area Food Banks are in need of food.

Mr. Canada Post stopped by this morning with a big box of yarn from Classic Elite. There are three new colours of Santorini - all perfect for spring.
Santorini's colorways sing along the matte and shiny textures inherent in the yarn, adding vibrant color to warm-weather garments, wraps and scarves.
Two balls will make the Sanibel Cowl. You are knitting on a 5mm needle. It's quick to make. What a great gift!

Pattern: Esmeralda Shawl (free from Classic Elite)
This pattern was designed in Sanibel (Santorini's solid coloured cousin). I think it would look awesome with the striping effect of Santorini.

I'm very happy with the outcome of last night's game. I have been a huge Peyton Manning fan since his college days. There was a bit of knitting during the game but I was very nervous and had to watch. Hopefully I'll get more squares knit on my throw tonight. Billions is waiting for us.

Pleasant Pheasant

Diana finished this shawl over the weekend. It is so beautiful. The pattern is called Isn't it Romantic? and is knit with one String Quintet kit from Lorna's Laces.
The pattern is only available with the kit right now. It will be available for purchase on Ravelry at the end of the year.

The February Dream Club has arrived.
From the designer, Laura Neel
When I felt this squishy, cozy yarn, I knew I wanted to make slippers from it! But, I also wanted them to last for a little bit. So, I made them almost entirely out of Eye of Partridge stitch, which is normally used just for the heel flap on top-down socks. The color reminded me of the bright plumage of pheasants, so the Pleasant Pheasant slippers were born!
These are toe-up slippers that are knit in the round until the heel shaping. The heel is worked back-and-forth with a little shaping, then bound off with a fun, three- needle bind off you may not have tried before - the zig-zag bind off.
What is this squishy yarn? Dream in Color Classy with Cashmere

An exquisite blend of luxury fibers and a refined twist unite to make Classy with Cashmere an exceptional yarn indeed. 20% cashmere lends the yarn an irresistible softness, while 10% nylon and 70% superwash merino make Classy with Cashmere a superb choice for well-loved baby garments and special occasion accessories alike.
The yarn and pattern are $45.50.

There was more Classy with Cashmere in the box.
We'll be making up kits for this simple to knit, Classy with Cashmere cowl. If you like the special edition colour but don't want to make slippers, two skeins will make the cowl.

I'm going to hit Publish and start on tomorrow's post. There is another new sample and more yarn to write about.

Eccentric Chevron Wrap

A big box arrived from Prism Yarns yesterday afternoon. It was full of kits for the Eccentric Chevron Wrap.
Designed to dip gracefully in the back, the Prism Eccentric Chevron Wrap sits comfortably on your shoulders. The graphic interest comes from unbalanced, or eccentric chevrons: one leg is much longer than the other, which skews the fabric off-center. By mirroring the stitches at center back, a dip is formed naturally.
The kit comes with all the Merino Mia yarn you'll need to make the wrap (6 - 190-yard skeins in assorted variegated colors), and the Eccentric Chevron Wrap pattern. Prism Merino Mia is absolutely stunning. This machine-washable, hand-dyed yarn is 100% merino superwash, with a gauge of 6 to 6.5 stitches to the inch.

We have a sample of the shawl knit in the store in the Neutral colourway. The yarn feels amazing.

Laura Bryant is the designer of the shawl as well as the dyer of the yarn. Her colour combinations are amazing. You might look at kit and think that one skein doesn't belong but trust Laura. If she put it in the kit then it works.

The kits have been added to the website. I snuck out of work a bit early yesterday to do some computer work. The Camp brochure is finished so a newsletter is going out to past Campers today. Then I started a store newsletter. Plus the website needed some updating. I thought there might have been a nap but that didn't happen. There wasn't any afternoon knitting either.

Need a baby gift?

From the designer, Susan Mills
Some knitters like to knit socks in between big projects – I like to knit baby sweaters. Someone is always having a baby. These days I am just as likely to know the grandmother as the mother who's expecting, but it doesn't matter to me – baby things are so much fun to knit! Their petite size makes them a finished object in a flash and the perfect break between bigger, longer or more complicated projects.

This week's pattern is my go-to baby cardigan. Knit from the top down, this version has solid colored stripes layered on the yoke of the self-striping Liberty Wool Print. Options: Omit the stripes or add more stripes; or work the edges in Garter stitch instead of rib.
This cardigan is knit out of Liberty Wool from Classic Elite.
Liberty Wool is a super-soft, washable wool available in solid and printed colors. This yarn's balanced twist will make all stitch combinations pop.
With all the great qualities of wool and the ease of machine washability, Liberty Wool knits at a gauge that suits many designs and is ideal for children's pieces as well as those for adults.
Liberty is one of my all time favourite yarns. It is soft. Easy to knit with. The colours are great. I like it so much that I'm knitting an afghan.

Mighty Miters is growing. Right now the pattern is only available with the purchase of Liberty Wool.

It was hard to get the whole throw in a picture. It's a bit wide.
Here are close ups so you can see the colours better.

Melo decided that he needed in on the action. Yes, you might say that I'm a bit obsessed. It's easy knitting. You are starting with 67 stitches and decreasing every wrong side row. After one diamond you have the pattern memorized. Now it's time to get back to it. I might be able to finish another diamond tonight.

Will you make socks or something else?

Ms. UPS brought in a huge box from Lorna's Laces today. There are new colours of Shepherd Sock and Solemate.
Striking hand-dyed colorways, unbelievable softness, superb stitch definition and easy-to-care-for machine washability. Shepherd Sock is truly the ultimate sock yarn! This versatile superwash wool has just a touch of nylon for added durability and can be used for everything from socks and shawls to lacy tops and lightweight cardigans.
Our Shepherd Sock comes in 50 gram skeins. 2 skeins will make a pair of socks.
196m (215 yards)
80% superwash wool, 20% nylon
Solemate is Lorna's amazing creation! A sock weight yarn that is made from 55% Superwash Merino, 15% Nylon and 30% Outlast, a fiber technology that continuously interacts with a body's microclimate to moderate temperature from being too hot or too cold. It was used by NASA. Ferrari uses it for their race car seats. Not only do you get this cutting edge technology, but it also comes in your favorite Lorna's hand-dyed color combinations! And don't forget that it is machine washable. Could you ask for anything else in a sock yarn?
55% superwash merino
15% nylon
30% Outlast
390m (425 yards) on a 100gram skein

If you don't want to make socks, three skeins of Shepherd Sock will make the Churchmouse Linen Stitch Scarf.

It's a big evening. The Amazing Race starts tonight. Then off to bed. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day (which means that I might not post). It's the annual Valentine's Dinner to raise money for Honduras. Beth and I will go right after the store closes. We are in charge of the coat check. And for some reason, the dinner is always the coldest night of the year. Then we will serve dinner. Spend one evening serving at an event and you have a whole new appreciation for wait staff in restaurants. Then we're back to the coat check. It makes for a long day but it's for a very good cause. All money raised goes directly to Honduras.

Is it spring yet?

I needed a bit of spring so I started Naushon in a new colour of Santorini from Classic Elite. I thought that I was being smart going outside for a picture. WRONG. It is really sunny so I was getting a shadow. But it was so cold that I couldn't stay out there trying to get a better picture. The chair inside will have to do for today.

Pattern: Naushon (in the Classic Elite book Along the Shores or the pattern can be purchased individually on Ravelry)
Yarn: 3 balls of Santorini
Needles: 4.5mm

I couldn't find my great cello bags this week so I brought a roll of cello from home to package up the awesome prize for The Food Drive. My cello wasn't wide enough to accommodate the full bags of yarn - there is a lot of yarn. We have one pretty package and then two large plastic bags filled.
There is still time to donate. Please help out if you can.
These three bags (with more to be added) are for the first ticket drawn.

The second ticket drawn will win the awesome Offhand Design bag.
And there is more. The next three names will each win a $50 gift certificate to the store.

My dad always told me that if you don't have anything good to say then don't say anything at all. I'm going to use his advice and not talk about last night's The Amazing Race. I'm also going to keep quiet in case you have it taped and haven't watched. All I'm going to say is that I might not make it through the season.

Scarf or cowl?

$

Today was Family Day in Ontario so the store was closed. Most of my day was spent knitting and watching many episodes of NCIS. The scarf could be finished tonight. I had a thought this afternoon that I might join the ends and make it a cowl. We'll see when I get a bit further.

The Valentine's Dinner on Saturday night went very well. We raised a lot of money to be sent to Honduras. The bad thing - I was so tired when I got home. Six and half hours in the store and then 5 and half hours at the dinner. Yesterday was spent napping and knitting. I thought about writing a blog post but I couldn't make myself sit at the computer.

Now it's back to knitting. I'm trying to get samples finished for the Knitters Frolic. I have a bad habit of waiting until the last minute so this year I'm trying something new - start early and finish early.

Zauberball Crazy arrived this morning. This is colour 1511.
Zauberball has been kicked up a notch, as two strands of the main ply have been dyed individually and then twisted together for a crazy combination! The end result is a self-striping multi-colored pattern, with a bold variegated design!
This yarn will work great for shawls, scarves, socks and sweaters.

I worked on paperwork this morning and sent in our registration for the Woodstock Fleece Festival. This is a show that we don't want to miss and in my opinion, you don't want to miss it either.
The Woodstock Fleece Festival is an annual event that invites fibre artists and others to join together in an atmosphere of appreciation, learning and camaraderie.
The show will incorporate workshops and demonstrations from top instructors.  Exhibition booths will be selling everything from raw fibre to quality finished goods.  It is also a great place to have lunch!

Woodstock Fairgrounds

Visit the Fleece Festival website for more information...

The knitting is finished on my scarf in Santorini and I am still deciding if it will stay a scarf or be joined for an infinity scarf. That will be tomorrow's decision. Tonight I will be going back to Mighty Miters.

Baby Cashmerino Tonals

I was doing an order for some Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Baby and found out that the yarn is coming in tonal colours. We should have the yarn in the store early next week.

Baby Tea Leaves (pattern purchased on Ravelry) would look really cute knit in the Tonals - 3 balls will make the cardigan - you might get away with 2 for the smallest size.
From the designer, Melissa LaBarre
finally, after many requests, a baby and toddler version of my tea leaves cardigan. i guess all i needed was my own baby to motivate me. :)
pattern come with directions for 0-6, 6-12, 12-18, and 18-24 months.
sweater has 3/4 length sleeves; which i’ve found to be perfect for keeping the sleeves clean with a messy eater.
Half a ball will make you the Stay-On Baby Booties (we have copies of the pattern in the store or you can purchase on Ravelry)
Karen Alfke adapted these cuties from a Swedish bootie pattern her mother used when the kids were tiny. The ribbed cuff and tie help them stay on even the most active of little feet. The pattern is written for your choice of three gauges, so you can use just about any yarn you like!

Little ties slipped through a row of eyelets keep these booties on, even during a good kick! We like the simplicity of twisted cord or crocheted chain ties but you can embellish them with beautiful ribbons to bump up the “awwww” factor at baby showers.
I did a bit of digging and found out that there will be a pattern book as well. The book isn't in Canada yet but should be soon.

Survivor started tonight. Some of the people on the brains team think very highly of themselves. It is going to be an interesting season.

Cozy Throw

$

0
Churchmouse Yarns took their Picot Edge Mohair Throw and Afghan pattern (available in the store and on Ravelry) and re knit it in Rowan's Brushed Fleece.
This is the kind of luxurious throw that beckons you to the sofa. The Churchmouse pattern calls for lots of garter stitch so it's a fine choice for beginners and a soothing activity for seasoned knitters.

We chose to knit this with a plain edge to showcase the warmth and lightness of Rowan’s Brushed Fleece but you can always add the bobbly picot edge shown on the pattern. Quick to knit, this throw is fluffy and insulating, but not overly warm or heavy. The lightly marled colors remind us of English moors and woodlands.
You'll need 8 skeins of Brushed Fleece to make the smaller throw size, or 10 skeins to make the afghan size shown.
This looks like something that would be great to curl up in while watching TV.

I'm not sure if I have introduced you to Huck. When we got home from dinner the fridge was open and a drink was on the counter. This is how I found Huck. Not the best day for introductions.

Ravelry did a spotlight on monkey patterns - Chinese New Year was recently celebrated and it is the Year of the Monkey. I asked Beth to bring Huck home so that I could get pictures.

Pattern: Monkey Jacobus (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Classic Elite Liberty Wool
Jacobus is the cutest monkey on Ravelry. Jacobus is knit round in one piece, without any seams. The pattern is very extensive, featuring 40 pictures of the various stages in knitting and row by row instructions.

The pattern is available both in english and in dutch, when you buy the pattern you have access to both the file in dutch and in english.

You can knit Jacobus in whatever yarn you want, both monkeys on the second picture are from the same pattern.

For the smallest one I used 30 grams of fingering weight sock yarn for the main color and 10 grams for the face, hands and feet, knit with needles 1,5mm (000). It measures 20cm (8 “).

Using DK/worsted yarn, you need 50 grams MC and about 20 grams CC, use needles 3 or 4 (3mm or 3,5mm). Your Jacobus will measure 35cm/14”.

For a large monkey, use aran or bulky, about 75 grams MC and 25 grams CC, needles 4mm-5mm, 6-8, and Jacobus measures 50 cm, 20”.
Take a look at your stash - I'm sure you have something that would make a great Monkey Jacobus.

Spring Scarf

I finished my scarf and Lynn sewed the ends in for me so that I could get a picture.
Pattern: Naushon (available in the Classic Elite book Along the Shore which we have in the store or on Ravelry)
Yarn: Classic Elite Santorini - 3 ball. I used 2154 Dream, a new colour for spring.

It ended up as a scarf because it was too long to be a cowl. I think that 2 repeats less would have worked. I put it on the mannequin to show how a cowl would look and I like it. Maybe I'll have to do another one :)

This is one of the scarves that I knit last spring. I used 2188 Chameleon. The pattern is easy to memorize and the yarn is addictive. Colours. Textures. It's hard to put the scarf down because you want to see how the next colour comes out.

And another one from last spring in colour 2189.
I told you it was addictive.

We have a new store sample. Thank you Lynda for knitting this so quickly.

Pattern: Two Harbors Poncho (we have copies in the store or you can purchase on Ravelry)
Easy does it. What’s not to love about this artful jacket alternative? Stitched sideways in two panels and seamed up the center, Two Harbors is fast and fun to knit, and truly flatters every figure. Knit in Extra, this light and lofty poncho will be your new absolute favorite.
Yarn: Blue Sky Alpacas Extra
A luxe mix of baby alpaca and fine Merino wool, Extra comes in generously sized hanks and a rich color palette, making it ideal for one and two skein projects. Light and lofty with a springy twist, it’s a versatile Aran weight that lends itself beautifully to a variety of knitting tensions and needle sizes.
55% baby alpaca
45% fine merino

150 gram skein

Ponchos are making a come back. Wait until you see our booth at the Frolic - there will be many different styles on display.
  • Your tension can be off a bit and it will still fit you
  • It's easy to throw on instead of a jacket
  • Great if you don't want a fitted garment
  • You can dress them up or wear casual
Here is the picture from the pattern so you can see a different colour combination. The yarn is so soft.
Three brand new colours (plus colours that we are out of) will be arriving in about a week.

3526 Ocean Deep

I read the coolest thing on Diamond Yarn's blog last night. Do you have a skein of yarn that you've tried to roll into a ball but instead of a ball you got one big mess?
There is a secret society in our midst and apparently very few of us are even remotely aware of it.  Imagine a place where you can mail in or drop off your tangled, tousled bowl-of-spaghetti-like yarn, and magically it appears one day in your mailbox neatly-wound into a plump cake, ready for knitting
