Knitters' Fair

$

I'm so close. We were watching The Good Wife on Saturday evening and I got to the cast off row. I thought that late on a Saturday night wasn't a good time to cast off over 500 stitches. They have to be even and not too tight. A clear head was necessary.
I went back to my Endless Wrap. I just finished the fifth skein, four to go. I got so into it yesterday that I didn't cast off the other shawl.
Ms. Lucy loves it when Beth puts the hose on. She tries to bite the water and they make a game of it. Then they go inside and snuggle while Beth rubs her dry. Beth send this picture with the caption
We had fun splash time with the hose. She looks huge in this picture!
I'm stuck in the house this morning (they are sealing the driveway and front steps) so I'm getting working on the Knitters' Fair.

Here are some of my tips if this is your first time heading to the show.

- trust me, there is lots of yarn. If you don't like lines or crowds, wait until noon to come. There will still be lots for you to see. If booths sell out of something, most are more than willing to ship it to you after the show
- bring lunch with you. Then you don't have to stand in line.
- wear something that you have knit. It's always fun to see completed projects.
- if you see something you like, mark down the booth you saw it in. I can't tell you how many times we get frantic people at the end of the day because they forgot where they saw something
- go through your Ravelry library and make notes of yarn that you are interested in. If there is a certain pattern, print that pattern and bring it with you. Also bring information on the yarn. What it's made of. Tension. Yardage. That will make it easier for me and other booths to help you substitute. When you come in the store I can do it on the computer but we have limited Internet access at the show.
- please have patience.
- the Fair isn't just for knitters. It is put on by a knitting guild - hence the name. Crocheters please come to the show. There is lots of fabulous yarns that you and your hooks will have fun working with.

Cupcakes and Glasgow

Lorna's Laces Solemate - Glasgow
The Knitters' Fair is less that two weeks away and Camp is less than a month. Yesterday was my last Monday off so I spent a lot of time on both.

There was a bunch of printing - the printer said Thank You when I left the house to run errands. And there were quite a few errands. I got home, ate dinner and then it was time for our fantasy football draft. No knitting at all. :(

I was briefly at the store to water the flowers and Mr. UPS stopped by. There was a big box from Lorna's Laces. Glasgow in Solemate is back in stock. The colour is amazing! And we have Cupcake. This colour is exclusive to us.

Yak and merino blend for squishable luxury in worsted weight Arietta. Available in a palette of soft mid tones that blend beautifully in stripes and colorblocks.

Relaxed and casual, this pullover is worked from the bottom up in the round to the underarm then divided, and the back and front are worked separately. Decorative eyelets and decreases adorn the front. Drop shoulder sleeves are picked up from the body and worked to the cuff.
The Funnel Neck Pullover is a free pattern in this week's Classic Elite Web-Letter
I'm home from work and Beth is making dinner. Then it's an evening of knitting. I have so many projects that need to be finished in the next week.

Palace

A new yarn is on the way from Classic Elite.
On-trend soft and pastel colors show the subtle tweed component of this sister yarn to Chalet and Chateau. The same wonderful fiber and chainette construction will work together in stripes and colorblocks with Chalet and Chateau.

What can you make with Palace? How about the Remy Poncho (pattern purchased on Ravelry)?

Going to the Knitters' Fair? I just saw this on their website today
With all the construction in the area right now, it's best to plan your route ahead of time! Note that Ottawa St is closed South of King St, so crossing town can be difficult.
We will be updating the website with even more accurate directions just before the Fair. So much of KW traffic flow is disrupted due to LRT construction, and it changes so frequently, that it's difficult to know how to get around town from one day to the next! Our intrepid volunteers will be scouting the area around the Aud on the week of the Fair, to give attendees the most current information possible. Check the Guild website just before the Fair
Although we encourage you to volunteer to get free entry to the K-W Knitters' Fair, we understand that not everyone who is coming is able to help out. But wouldn't you still like to get into the Fair for free?
We are holding a contest on Facebook and Twitter to give away 4 free passes for sharing news of our event! This contest is open to everyone except vendors at the Fair. Here are the rules:

  • On Facebook, (here is the link) comment on our post to tell us what you’re most excited about for the KW Knitters’ Fair this year. Share our post for an extra entry.
  • On Twitter, tweet what you’re excited about at The KWFair with #KWFairExcitement. Retweet our post for an extra entry.
Winners will be selected on September 5th at 9pm EST, using random.org to randomly select from the comments, shares, tweets, or retweets. Winners will be notified by private message.
I finished the cast off on my Eccentric Chevron Wrap this afternoon. We'll get pictures tomorrow. Tonight I'm going back to Outline. I hope to have it finished for the Fair - fingers crossed the Hedgehog order will be arriving late next week.

Onto another project

It's almost finished. I just need to trim the fringes. That needs to be done at home on my sewing table. I will tape them down and use my rotary cutter to get a straight, even line. I want to be awake and alert when I do it. Otherwise you cut once and it isn't straight and then you cut again. Before you know it you have no fringes left. Kind of like cutting your bangs when you were young.

Alex just finished a new sample for the store.

Pattern: Campside (free on Ravelry)
Yarn: 5 balls of Classic Elite Arietta
Yak and merino blend for squishable luxury in worsted weight Arietta. Outstanding stitch definition and a color range of soft mid-tones make Arietta a cable knitter's dream.
If you visit the store, make sure you feel the shawl. It is so soft.
We have all our kits made for the Knitters' Fair. Our lists are made and we're ready to start packing. I always get antsy over the long weekend. Are we ready? Will the orders that I'm expecting arrive on time? Will we get everything into the van? Things always turn out well so I don't know why I'm worrying. Oh yeah, there are the three projects that I want to finish for the Fair.

Mr. Canada Post arrived this morning with a very important box. Hedgehog is here. There are 24 colours of Skinny Singles and 7 colours of Twist Sock.

The yarn will be in the store until Wednesday at noon. Anything remaining will be packed up for the Knitters' Fair.

If you want to guarantee that you get the colours you want/need then please order them online. Even if you don't want them shipped. Just complete your order (paying for shipping) and leave a comment that you are picking them up. We will refund the shipping when you come to the store.

Saturday's Public Service Announcement

I'm trying to get some projects finished for the Knitters' Fair.

The first is from a Frabjous Fibers Cheshire Cat mini skein pack. I fudged the finish of it before the Knitters' Frolic (because I was trying to finish it the night before the show). It has bothered me since so I took back 20 rows this week and am finishing it properly.
I still have 6 rows to go but I wanted a picture before I left work today.

Pattern: Quaker Lines (purchased on Ravelry)

Today's Public Service Announcement
Mark down what size needles you knit the project on. If you leave a project in a box for a while, it's usually on the needles. Mine was totally cast off. And when I look at what I've knit this week I think I picked the wrong size needle. I might have been working on a 3.75mm and now I'm on a 4mm. Hopefully blocking will help.

The other project that I'm trying to finish is Outline. I think I'll make it. We're having a Netflix marathon tonight - The Good Wife. Knitting tomorrow and Monday is a holiday so I should have more knitting time. I'm feeling hopeful.

Happy Sunday

I was merrily knitting away when I realized that I had better get some pictures. My friend is hanging on our back fence. Next summer we should have lots of flowers climbing up the fence.
I'm hoping that after a night of TV and a day of knitting tomorrow my shawl will be finished.

Pattern: Outline (free from Hedgehog Fibres)
Yarn: 5 skeins of Skinny Singles
Do you hoard beautiful, one of a kind, hand dyed skeins of soft sock weight yarn? I do too. This is the perfect design to use up all of your crazy, colourful yarns, remnants, bits and bobs, leftover yarns, and all of your prized special skeins too.
Simple in construction, this wrap lets your yarns shine and your mind rest. It’s a very easy, enjoyable knit, with a great knitting rhythm.
Easily adaptable, in terms of length, width and colours. Try using yarns that are of similar weight for best results.
This is from the other corner of our yard. I was trying to get the shawl along with the sunflowers that our neighbour planted. They didn't want to turn around for me. The difference in the light from one corner to the other is amazing.

The flowers in our garden are looking pretty.

I'm heading back to my knitting. Big Brother will be on soon and we'll find out the new HOH. Then The Great Food Truck Race.

Holiday Monday

Quaker Lines has been cast off and is soaking in Soak. I tried indoor pictures today because it was so sunny out. And hot and my friend was quite happy to be in the air conditioned house.

These are the sunflowers I was talking about yesterday. Next year we are going to throw some seeds behind our house.

There are many great things about a holiday Monday. Unfortunately I'm trying to get things ready for the Fair and ran out of printer ink. :( I'm stuck until tomorrow evening. I guess I'm going to knit this afternoon.

I did a bit of knitting while watching the golf and Jays. Now the Tiger Cats are on. Hopefully they start playing better because so far they are bad.

I didn't finish but I'm close. These pictures show the colours much better than the pictures from last night.
I'm going to knit for another hour or so and then bed to make sure I get a good nights sleep. Tomorrow the packing begins.

Shockwaves

Alex came in to pick up some new colours of Hedgehog and brought in a shawl that she just completed. Love it. Now I want to put together colours. Next week :) But probably the end of the month when the next order from Hedgehog arrives.
Pattern: Shockwaves (free pattern)
Shockwaves is a light and airy wrap of generous proportions. Pleasant and easy knit, great for showcasing all your cherished speckled skeins.

You’ll need 4 skeins in 4 colours of Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles yarn.
Alex used 3 skeins of Skinny Singles and 1 skein of tosh merino light

The merino light is slightly thicker but you can't tell in the finished shawl.

I took this picture to show the interesting edge. Both ends of the shawl are finished this way.

I hope to get to my shawl tonight but first Beth and I have some Knitters' Fair errands to do. There are always last minute things that need to be picked up.

It's almost time for the next Stephen West Mystery KAL. I believe it is being announced on Friday. Here is the link to the Ravelry group...

I've participated in four Mystery KALs. I finished three and the fourth is in a box. It wasn't the pattern - it was my yarn choice.
The first Mystery KAL was for Earth and Sky.
Exploration Station
The Doodler

Lorraine knit this shawl for me. Color Craving. I didn't think I had time to keep up so I passed on this one. Then I saw the amazing finished shawls so I needed it.

Joining a Mystery KAL is a leap of faith. You don't have any clue what the shawl will look like. You aren't sure which colours to choose or what order to knit them in. But the fun factor is very high. You can't wait until Friday morning when the next clue comes out. It seems like a lot of knitting but you will be shocked at how easy it is to keep up. Stephen writes a very good pattern and he has videos for techniques that might be new to you.

If you just can't do it, watch along in Stephen's Ravelry group to see pictures of the progress. Maybe you'll join a bit late or when the shawl is finished.

It's almost here. Fall officially starts for us the weekend of the Knitters' Fair.

What are we taking??
  • tosh merino light - we have close to 300 skeins packed including 4 brand new colours
  • Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles
  • Mrs Crosby Train Case
  • Lorna's Laces Solemate including our exclusive colour Cupcake
  • Freia Shawl Ball
  • Freia Bulky

Mrs. Crosby Reticule. Our sample is called Millers' Daughter.
Eccentric Chevron Wrap kits from Prism Yarns
Elder Tree shawl kits in Rowan Revive are packed. And they are on sale for $45.

There are road closures in Kitchener and the KW Knitters' Guild has been monitoring them and posting on their website. Here are the most up to date directions
    Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex
    400 East Ave
    Kitchener, Ontario
With all the construction in the area right now, it's best to plan your route ahead of time! Note that Ottawa St is closed South of King St, so crossing town can be difficult.

The most reliable way to get to the Aud is to take Highway 7 (Conestoga Parkway) to the Ottawa St exit: the Aud's main entrance is just after the off ramp.

If you are coming from in town, Weber St is reliably open, as is East Ave. Stirling Ave is the closest open east-west street.
Are you ready for some football? I am. I'm going to sign off and watch and finish my Outline. 7 more rows and then cast off. You know that I'm going to be finishing it tomorrow night :)

Another great Knitters' Fair is in the books. We had a fun day. Thanks to the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters Guild and all their amazing volunteers. Thanks to everyone who came out and shopped. A big thanks to my dad and Beth for helping with set up and take down and Cathy who worked in the store which made it possible for us to go play in Kitchener.
The three musketeers helped out in the booth. Thanks to Lynn, Wannietta and Sarah.

And Sarah's husband John who helped us take down the booth. We did it in record time this year. 18 minutes from the time the show closed until the vehicles were packed. We hustled.

Sarah had an idea for fun pictures. They each picked something in the booth that they wanted to have.

If you didn't make it to the show, here are some pictures from the booth.

Now it's time to put my feet up. We were up at 5:30 this morning so I have a feeling I won't be up much longer. Then tomorrow we start getting ready for Camp.

    Hitchhiker

Late yesterday afternoon we were straightening out mini skein kits in the booth and decided to challenge each other. Lynn, Sarah, Wannietta and I are all making a scarf for the Woodstock Fleece Festival.

I'm using a SweetGeorgia Party of Five kit in Jelly Bean.

     Sarah's colour is Swell.
We are making Hitchhiker (pattern purchased on Ravelry).
Garter stitch. It‘s simple, its warm and squishy, stretchy and reversible and it makes any variegated, hand-dyed sockyarn really shine. So here‘s Hitchhiker: It is a narrow, slightly asymmetrically shaped triangular shawlette that can be wrapped around the neck several times. The ends are long enough to tie it with a knot. One of the short sides of the triangle features a saw-tooth border that evolves naturally during the knitting and gives the shawl its unusual shape. Because the knitting starts at one end, you can stop anytime, bind off and end up with a useful neckerchief, shawlette or shawl. A perfect project to relax in between more complicated ones, also very suitable for beginners and young knitters.
We decided to knit on larger needles to make the scarf bigger. Sarah is knitting on a 3.5mm. (I'm on a 3.75mm)
Wannietta is going to use a Frabjous Fibers Cheshire Cat kit in Too Much Pepper.

Poor Lynn. She had a kit picked out and in her bag. Then a customer picked up a kit in that colour but they wanted two. Lynn was kind and gave back her kit. Tomorrow she'll pick out a kit while we're unpacking.

Cathy was working in the store so she wasn't part of the conversation. I'm adding her to our challenge. She knits fast enough that she can catch up to us.

    Pineapples

I was asked about the shawl that Lynn was wearing in the Knitters' Fair pictures. It's called Chevrione (purchased on Ravelry) knit in one Freia Shawl Ball
Chevrione is knit starting from the small end of the triangle to the end, where it is bound off using a picot bind off! It can be worked with lots of beads, a few beads, or no beads at all. Chevrione was specifically designed to use gradients, as the wave pattern shows beautifully with the gradient. This pattern includes both full written and charted instructions, and can easily be modified for size by working extra repeats of Chart B, or omitting repeats of Chart B.
It would look amazing in a mini skein kit
    • Party of Five
    • Frabjous Fibers Cheshire Cat
    • Lorna's Laces String Quintet
    • Fiberstory
I'm happy to introduce the newest scent from Soak. This should be in the store later this week. I can't wait to try it!

Be a pineapple. Stand Tall, wearing a lily filled crown, and always be sweet on the inside.
This exotic new scent has sparkling top notes of sweet orange are fused with the soothing floral scent of Lilies. Tropical pineapple, orchid and melon dance through the heart; and evolve into a sophisticated dry down of sheer musk.
We will have large bottles (375 mL and will do 75 washes) and small bottles (90 mL and will do 18 washes).
Soak is ideal for raw fibers, spinning, dyeing – and for the entire fiber lifecycle. Use it to care for cashmere, wool, cotton and other delicate knits.
Visit Soak's website to see fool-proof tips for taking care of your knitted items.

It's time for football, baseball and knitting. I finished the first ball of Hitchhiker last night. Maybe I can through most of the second ball tonight.

    Ashling and Annisa

Wannietta finished this amazing shawl and brought it to us at the Knitters' Fair.

Pattern: Ashling Shawl (free on Ravelry)
Yarn: 2 skeins of Mrs. Crosby Reticule in Magnolia
Ashling is a lovely and lightweight shawl to keep you both pretty and warm. It has a little lace, a lot of garter stitch and two sizes - just pick up the one you have enough yarn for!
I did a size larger than the ones indicated.
    I repeated rows 1-4 (63) times more, 394 sts.
In the lace patterning, I repeated
Rows 5-8 (20) times more, resulting in 9 lace pattern repeats overall.
Then I finished with a picot bind off.

I finally blocked my shawl and I love it.

Pattern: Annisa Wrap (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Mrs Crosby Train Case - 3 skeins
Fun to knit and wonderful to wear, Annisa is an asymetrical wrap that will let your creative side out to play. Team a solid with a gradient, speckles or bright yarn for playful stripes, add a bold or subtle pop for the eyelets and let Annisa be a perfect reflection of your colour passions.
Now back to the packing. We've unpacked from the Knitters' Fair and now things are going into boxes for Camp. I don't want to jinx it but I think we're ready. A few more things to pack and a bit of printing and I'm done.

We just unpacked a shipment from madelinetosh including tosh merino light.

There are 4 brand new, limited edition colours. When these are gone we will not be able to get anymore. I've been good and haven't taken any yet but that could change.
    Stormborn
    Favorite Pair
    First Light
    Rey

The four new colours haven't been added to the website yet (packing is getting in the way) but the other 28 colours in the shipment are online.

I love emails that say 'Look what I finished'. One arrived this morning from Rita with a picture of her beautiful shawl.
Here is a shawl that I knit earlier this summer and forgot to bring around to show you.  It's a very fast knit and uses one of the Sweet Georgia Party of 5 kits and just over half a skein of the Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock.
Pattern: Black to the Fuchsia (purchased on Ravelry)

Sarah, Wannietta and I are making progress on our Hitchhikers. Lynn got her kit but lost it but now she's found it and will start tonight. Cathy came in today to get her kit.

Sarah is part way through the second ball.
Wannietta is using a Cheshire Cat mini skein pack from Frabjous Fibers.
I started the third ball last night.
I love how it's knitting up. And mindless garter stitch is always fun.

Another eviction on Big Brother tonight. Go Paul!

    Milo

My knitters have been busy. Alex brought in this awesome shawl yesterday. Our Camp Fashion Show is going to be amazing!

Pattern: Close to You (free on Ravelry)
This simple but stylish shawl is knitted from one end with gradual increases to form a triangular shawl which is fun to knit and easy to wear. The zigzag border with eyelets gives it a nice touch and makes the knitting interesting.
Yarn: 2 skeins of Manos Milo
Milo is our newest yarn. A gorgeous simple ply merino and linen blend.

The linen unique nature gives Milo a rustic yet elegant look, with its raw fibers and metallic shine.

We love the drape of the finished fabric and find it perfect for season spanning projects such as kerchiefs, shawls and lightweight tops.
The pattern calls for 400 yards of fingering weight yarn which will give you a smaller shawl - closer to a scarf. We used 760 yards for our shawl.

Lynn started her Hitchhiker last night.
She is using a Frabjous Fibers Cheshire Cat kit on 3.5mm needles.

Wannietta texted me a few pictures of hers. I thought I was going to win but now it's pretty apparent that I won't.
It's going to be striking in the grey to black.
I'm off to work on mine. If I don't sleep tonight I might be able to catch up.

I made it to the fourth colour this morning. I highly recommend Hitchhiker if you are looking for a mindless project that looks great. I'm having fun using the gradient kit and have my eyes on another one when this one is finished.
Sarah just sent me a text.
Ball 3 started. 2 to go! Amazing how the colours blend. At first you don't even notice a difference.
It looks like she's having fun knitting the scarf too.

This was the post that I started Friday afternoon and was going to post last night. It didn't happen so I'm going to add to it.

Wannietta sent a picture this morning.
Not blocked yet, but it's done. I really love it.
I can't wait to see it in person. I really thought that I had a chance at beating her but she is too fast.
I made it to the fifth ball. I had to be quick getting the picture - the rain had stopped but the trees were dripping on me and the knitting. I think it should be finished tonight. One week. I'll get at least one more finished before the Fleece Festival.
Cathy just started her third ball. She is using a Frabjous kit like Wannietta and Lynn. Her colours are going green to turquoise.

Now I need to go play with the Hedgehog. I can't decide which colours I want but I know that I need some.

I finished casting off my Hitchhiker this morning. Just over a week. Not too bad.
I really wish I had a mannequin at home. I tried hanging the scarf on the fence but that didn't work. The colours are a bit off - the end of the scarf is more orange than yellow. I'll get pictures tomorrow after someone sews the ends in for me. :)
Someone can get up on the bed now. She is very proud of herself. She doesn't sleep in the bed but mom and dad wake up in the morning and Lucy is snuggled in between them.
She's my dad's baby. He weighed her last Saturday and she was 61 lbs.

The store is a bit of a mess - we're packing for Camp. For the past few years we unpacked from the Knitters' Fair and had Camp the next weekend. This year we put a week in between. I'm not sure if that was good or bad. Getting ready has been more relaxed but I'm ready to get going. And there are boxes everywhere. If you haven't been to Camp then you might be wondering what I'm talking about. We do a fashion show on Friday evening. That means 40-50 garments. We also set up a mini yarn shop. Kits for the fashion show garments. Needles. Books. Then there are the amazing goodie bags that everyone gets. Oh yeah, the door prizes. Our suppliers are very generous.

If you're coming to Camp, make sure you watch the Camp blog for information...

I brought home a Mountain Colors Perspective kit and am making another Hitchhiker. Perfect Camp knitting.
There would have been more knitting today but I was in charge of the converter. Beth has it now so I'm good to go.
