The flight to Vegas this morning was good. A bit rough but I knit the whole way. Cathy's bag is the perfect size. Three 50gram skeins of sock yarn. Needles. Pattern. A small bag of pretzels. Everything you need when traveling. The view from my room isn't very good this time but there won't be much time in the room. It is grey and raining. And only 8C. Not much better than at home. Tonight is an early night. My flight to San Jose leaves at 6:45 in the morning. Then I'll be running to see everything. And get lots of pictures. I'm getting excited!

Hello Vegas

TNNA
I had a great day in San Jose at TNNA but it was a long day. I've been up since 3:30. The Prism booth is always a treat. This shawl is knit with Delicato. The yarn is made of 100% Tencel. It is smooth and silky. Tencel is tens times more absorbent than cotton, stretches less than rayon and is environmentally friendly. Laura Bryant's colours are amazing. We have 6 different colourways coming for the shawl. Laura's sweater from Vogue Knitting. We have kits in the store - it's gorgeous. These are the new colours from Freia Fibers. More on those tomorrow. I haven't had a proper meal today so I'm going to hit Publish and head to California Pizza Kitchen.

More from TNNA
This show stopper was in the Freia Fibers booth. One of the ladies who works there knit it. It is made from balls of yarn that Tina dyed and then rejected. Amazing! I've shown pictures of the So Fond of Rainbows pack from Frabjous Fibers. This amazing cardigan is knit from The Cheshire Cat version - it's fingering weight. The pattern will be available in a few weeks. The cardigan was sitting on a chair. I asked if it could be modeled. Fabulous. If the brights are a bit too bright for you, don't forget about the new pack. There will be four new colours coming from Mrs. Crosby. She has been busy in the dye studio. They are asking to be added into a Find Your Fade. It was a long day and I'm in the room for the night. The day was exciting and I want to show you all the great pictures. I'm afraid that I might get caught up in the football tomorrow so I'm posting early.

Lots of Yarn
My knitting is growing. Spending time in airports and on planes helps. The 3 Color Cashmere Cowl pattern is perfect for mindless knitting.
Beth sent me a picture before she went to bed last night. Her hat is finished. Okay, the knitting is finished. There are a few ends to sew in. Beth commented that she really liked working with the yarn and likes the finished hat.
Super, super bulky yarn is hot right now but there aren't many yarns available on the market that are 100% wool. We are going to be receiving an order from Loopy Mango when I get home. One ball and 35mm needles (they are coming in the shipment with the yarn) will make the garter stitch throw. Two balls will make the ribbed throw.
We are getting ecru, pale grey, oatmeal, dark grey and purple. String Quintets from Lorna's Laces are coming in 5 new colourways.
Xylophone
Bazantar - I have the names for two colours because the kits are sitting beside me as I'm typing. I'm going to combine them in a shawl. Our shipment should be arriving in a couple of weeks.
Sirdar Baby Crofter has been popular in the store. We're going to be getting it in a chunky version.
Cute for kids and super quick to knit.
I've been up for a bit and did mailing labels for Lynn. Boxes are going out and now my work is done. I'm off to the Forum Shoppes and then onto The Bellagio and Aria. The weather if finally nice here. It's been raining the past two days. My dad asked me what the temperature was yesterday but I couldn't tell him because I didn't make it outside.
↧
Vegas
Every time I pass this store in the Forum Shoppes I dream about what it would look like as a yarn store. 3 floors of yarn. Can you imagine??? I'm going to be dreaming about this tonight.
The Conservatory at the Bellagio was beautiful as always. It is decorated for Chinese New Year - The Year of the Rooster. There is always someone working in the gardens. This lady is having her flowers replaced. There was a lot of walking today. I'm in the room writing and enjoying a tea. I think I'll knit a few rows before thinking about dinner.

On My Way Home
I'm posting early today. Most of the day will be spent flying and I don't think I'll want to sit down and write when I get home. It's been a fun morning. The power went out in the hotel about 5:45 and was out for about 45 minutes. Thankfully my flight isn't until 12:40 so I have lots of time to get ready. I spent some time wandering yesterday. The Venetian is decorated for the Chinese New Year. I haven't been to The Wynn in a long time. It was nice to be out in the sun.
I did spend some time working while I was away. I've been emailing with Hedgehog Fibres and our next order has been shipped. There will be 19 colours of Skinny Singles including 2 potluck colours. 10 colours of Twist Sock. 23 colours of Sock including 2 potluck.
I hope the order hurries. I haven't decided on the colours yet for my Ambah O'Brien Mystery KAL. There is still time for you to purchase the pattern - there is a coupon code for $2 off until February 3 when the KAL starts. Now I need to pack. I've tried to answer all emails while I was away but if I've missed something I'll be back in the store tomorrow.

Happy to be Back
It's good to be home and back in the store. I've been arranging shipments for yarn and accessories purchased at TNNA. An order was placed for a new yarn for the Toronto Knitters Frolic (It's a secret right now). Plus there has been unpacking of boxes.
The first of two boxes from Hedgehog Fibres arrived this afternoon and was filled with Twist Sock.
LITLG posted a picture on Instagram that has me excited.
Life in the Long Grass just finished dying a huge batch of yarn. Some of the yarn pictured will be on the way to us very soon. It could be arriving next week.
Loopy Mango has been shipped and should be here tomorrow afternoon. You could have a throw knit by Monday.
I'm unpacked, laundry is done and now it's time for a bit of knitting before bed.

80% Blue Faced Leicester wool and 20% nylon, superwash. Hard-wearing fingering weight yarn with a high twist in the ply. Great stitch definition, best suited for sock knitting. That tight twist will keep precious hand knit socks in shape wash after wash after wash. Soft, yet durable and machine washable. Best of both worlds!Lynn used Twist Sock for a pair of socks and loves the yarn. This was before blocking the second sock. I can't get a new picture because she is wearing them all the time.

Fun day of visitors
Lynda sent a box this week - what a great vest.
Pattern: Library Vest from Churchmouse Yarns (pattern in the store or available on Ravelry)
Yarn: Zara from Filatura di Crosa
Sarah and Cathy stopped in for a visit and Sarah put the vest on so we could see how it looks. The buttons haven't been sewn on yet but Sarah thinks she would like it with no buttons. Or maybe just one button at the top.
It was a fun day for visitors. Wannietta came in this afternoon - she just finished a shawl for the store.
Pattern: Born Trippy (free on Ravelry)
Yarn: Hedgehog Fibres Sock
Full skein of Fly
Mini skeins - 1 each of Hush, Wish, Sorry not Sorry and Coral
Hedgehog has new colours. Meet Hula Hoop. They're on order and I'm hoping they'll be here sometime in March.
I'm not sure if she realizes that she's a dog.

With simple styling that lends itself to the classroom, workplace or weekend, this vest is so classic, so quintessential, it could become your uniform. The jumper length has a certain schoolgirl chic. The abridged, hip-length version is a flattering layer without the bulk of a sweater. Either way, it’s a nice little primer of techniques you’ll use again and again.I had to check under Sarah's coat when she left. I was afraid that the vest was going home with her - it fit her perfectly.

Just one skein of Hedgehog Fibres Sock Yarn together with four Sock Minis will knit up into this cute little chevron scarf. Use your prized favourite speckle-tastic skein! Add a few pops of colour with the Minis, or use a second full skein for a slightly longer scarf. Speckles work well with a matching or a contrasting semi-solid.

Prism
There was a new shawl hanging in the Prism booth at TNNA. I took a picture but I couldn't get a good picture. Here it is.
Laura's colour combinations are amazing. The kits should be arriving mid-February.
Lynda knit this Eccentric Wrap for us and I have knit the kit as well. There will be more colours coming. These kits are more tonal. Our kits are not coming with 6 skeins. Ours will have 7. This makes the wrap a bit bigger. Or it is perfect for Find Your Fade.
The kit will have 1330 yards of yarn. A bit less than Find Your Fade calls for but the shawl is huge and most people wouldn't mind it a big smaller.
Check out the awesome classes!
Three strands of slender, silky Delicato team up in varying color combinations to create this dramatic wrap.
You take charge, changing color gradually and at will.

Big Box of Hedgehog
It's been a long evening working on the computer. Accounting. :( My post is going to be quick because I can barely focus.
Here's a little teaser from a shipment that should be arriving soon.
Turf, Jezebel and Tidepool
Mr. Canada Post made a visit this morning. Hedgehog is here!
The Potluck colours are great. I'll have them on the website tomorrow.
Now I need to choose my colours for the Ambah O'Brien Mystery KAL. An email came from Ambah this evening with some notes on the KAL including
Beth was Lucy sitting today. They started out in the office but someone wasn't on her best behaviour. The other dogs caught her attention and she wouldn't leave them alone. Then the cleaning ladies came. And there were meetings going on. Beth packed Lucy up and brought her to our house.
It seems that she is pretty comfortable here.

While all of the colours are used equally in the project, CC2 will be the best choice for the colour you'd like to dominate overall. It is perfect if MC and CC1 work well together and use CC2 to contrast against these two.
MC: Can be a soft/subtle or bolder contrast to CC1, either a solid or variegated will work here.
CC1: The perfect place for your speckle skein, if you are using one. A solid/ semi solid or variegated will also work well here, if you are using 2 variegated skeins they will be best placed here and for MC.
CC2: Best for a solid/ semi solid skein. Great to have this colour contrast or be darker/lighter than MC and CC1. Perfect for a bold colour choice or a dark or light neutral.

Pacific Northwest
I had fun in the Freia booth at TNNA. New colours will be arriving next week.
The Freia Fibers Spring 2017 collection of ombrés are unified by their namesakes found in nature's grand palette of the Pacific Northwest.
AURORA embodies some of the rich colors found in the Northern Lights. The luminous hues begin with a pale pistachio green that evolves into a brighter seafoam; from there, the yarn shifts into light sky blue and ends with the mystery of midnight.
CHINOOK opens robustly with a deep turquoise that transitions through bronze riverbank shades ending in an earthly terra cotta. The auburn is reminiscent of gorgeous autumn leaves, and the vivid cerulean brings to mind the crystal waters of Lake Tahoe.
COHO is named for the salmon that thrive along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. This is a sweetly romantic tint that features warm grey/lavender, silver cloud, and ends in a dreamy pop of peach. This colorway is feminine but muted, and pairs beautifully with our bolder gradations.
The new colours are coming in Shawl Ball.
The Medialuna Shawl takes just a single ball of the Freia shawl ball and 3.75mm needles.
Shifting Sands is also knit on 3.75mm needles with one ball of Shawl Ball.
I couldn't help myself. Sample balls came home from TNNA and I cast on Medialuna this afternoon. We'll be taking this yarn to the Toronto Knitters Frolic and the more samples the better.
I haven't knit with the Shawl Ball before - it's very nice. And tomorrow I get to see how well the yarn rips out. YIKES! The pattern says to roll the ball into two balls. I thought I was being smart working from each end of the ball. All of a sudden it hit me - at the end of the shawl I will be working with the same colour for the main and contrast colours. I need to be working the mauve for the main and the grey colour for the contrast. The main will go from mauve to grey. The contrast will work from grey to peach. That way the colours won't overlap.
Today's public service announcement - the designer asks you to do a step in the pattern for a reason. Don't try to outsmart them.
One good thing - before I rip this out I'm going to try it on a bit bigger needle. The pattern calls for 3.75mm but I think it will work on 4mm. This will make a larger shawl.
I have a feeling I'm going to have knitting nightmares tonight. :(

With so many reasons to love our new Merino Fingering yarn, it's hard to know where to start. First-off, the fiber: this is our first single-ply fingering yarn, and our first yarn in a luscious, lovely 100% merino. With a micron count of 21.5, it has an against-the-skin softness for neckwear. Then there's the feel-good manufacturing: this is a true cruelty-free merino, grown and spun in the United States to our particular specifications. Though exceptional stitch-definition has long been a hallmark of our single-ply yarns, the loftiness of this Merino Fingering is particularly versatile, lending itself to be stitched up in a variety of gauges without losing definition or drape. Voracious Freia fans will be perhaps most excited by the upgraded yardage. These 100 gram "Shawl Balls" measure 430 yards, perfect for single-skein projects. The shawl patterns aren't on Ravelry yet but should be soon! Hopefully a week and a half.

Assana Wrap

Yarn: 1 skein each of
Mrs Crosby Train Case Midnight Aubergine
Mrs Crosby Train Case Pansy
Lorna's Laces Solemate Glasgow (We sold out of Glasgow this afternoon but more is on the way)
Yes, I'm a bit obsessed with Ambah O'Brien's shawls right now.
I was going to write more but the first clue came out for Ambah's MKAL and my skeins aren't wound yet.

Fun to knit and a timeless addition to your wardrobe, Assana provides a beautiful base for your favourite colour trio. Play two colours against each other in the stripes section: a gradient, speckled yarn, semi-solid hand dyes - anything goes here; then complement with a bold or subtle choice of colour for the zig-zag lace section.
Worked side ways, on the bias, Assana includes both written and charted instructions for the lace section.

Mystery
My Building Blocks has been paired with the Library Vest in the store. I like the look. (It doesn't live here but it was way too cold to go outside. I moved my friend to a spot for a better picture)
The rest of my post is about Ambah's Mystery KAL. There aren't any spoiler pictures - just some hints that might help if you haven't started.
I started winding my balls after last night's post and got two wound before my electric ball winder died. There is no power :( I think we've hurt it over the years and it's time for a new one.
I'm using Skinny Singles from Hedgehog. I will be casting on with Glacier (the turquoise) and then going to Pistachio. My last colour will be Stone (a grey/beige mix).
The night didn't get any better. This had nothing to do with the pattern instructions. It had to do with the person reading the pattern. I didn't have much sleep the night before and should've worked on a different project.
The shawl starts with a new technique called the Turkish Cast On. I haven't done it before but Ambah has a tutorial and it is easy to follow. Here is a video that will help as well.
I got to about the forth row and thought I was wrong (it turns out I wasn't) so I pulled it out. You shouldn't do a new technique during The Big Bang Theory. I started again with no problems. Except I almost finished the first colour and was short of stitches.
This tripped me up. (Now I'm trying to knit during Top Chef) I forgot to increase after the last marker - not once but twice. For some reason I was only doing the increases within the markers. Yup. I'm starting again. I really know how to do the Turkish Cast On now. :)
I'm home from work and ready to get back to the shawl. The first colour is cast on and I'm through 10 rows. It's much better and I'm happy now. I knit a bit on the loose side and should probably be using a 3.5mm needle for the shawl but I like a large shawl so I'm using 3.75mm. For the cast on and first 6 rows I used a 3.25mm needle. It made the start look a lot neater.

Assana Wrap Part Two
Diana was in this morning with another Assana Wrap. We had sun so I took my friend outside for pictures.
This time we used Tosh Sock - 1 skein each of aura, fog and first light.
Now I'm torn about which one to take. They are both beautiful.
Our super huge Tosh order is being dyed this week and we should have it by the end of the month. There will be 25 colours of sock in the boxes - almost all the out of stock colours are coming.
This morning I went into the sewing room to try the ball winder. Happy Dance. It worked. My last ball is wound and ready to go.
I'm working away on my Ambah MKAL and all is going well. I hope to have the first clue finished sometime tomorrow. I've already started that post in case I get caught up in my knitting and then the football game. I'll add a picture at the end of the post with Clue One finished - I'll let you know where to stop reading if you don't want the mystery revealed.
The LITLG has made it to Canada. It's in Customs and I hope we'll see it this week.

Super Sunday
Lynda has been busy working a Linen Stitch Scarf for me. She's using Mechita from Malabrigo.
We decided on doing the scarf fringeless this time. We're also making it longer and wider.
When Diana was in the store yesterday I noticed an interesting scarf tucked inside her coat. She took it off so we could get a few pictures
Pattern: Uluru (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: one skein of tosh sock and one skein of Alegria
A more colourful hand dyed (like Malabrigo Mechita) as the accent could be interesting - I think we'll have Diana knit us a sample for the store.
Freia Fingering is on sale (20% off) and would make an awesome accent colour.
Now I can't stop thinking of combinations.
How about a gradient kit? Think Cheshire Cat kit from Frabjous Fibers. I'd do the outline in a solid colour. For the contrast I would work the gradient skeins in order from light to dark. The scarf will fade for you.
Life in the Long Grass Update
It looks like the yarn will be delivered tomorrow. The website is ready to go - once the yarn arrives I'll make the page go live.
I'm going to show my MKAL knitting so far. If you don't want to see then it's time to stop reading.
I'm enjoying the pattern so far. Ambah's patterns are easy to follow. I can't wait to see where we go next. Hurry up Thursday night - we should see the next clue around 8pm.

Uluru is a multi-gauge, multi-sized pattern designed to showcase hand dyed yarns. Got Lace, Pure or Twin, Blend or DK? There’s a size or shape of Uluru to match, diamond, triangular, or parallelogram, shawl or scarf. Pair up a multi and a semi solid or two elegant semi solids - the choices are endless and enticingThis would look awesome in remnants of sock yarn. I would pick a main colour (navy in the picture) to tie everything together.
Uluru is modular, so you only work on a few stitches at a time, but there’s no sewing up or piecing together. Better yet, there aren’t hundreds of ends to weave in. And of course, you can customize, dig deep into your stash, get creative and most of all, have fun!
A more colourful hand dyed (like Malabrigo Mechita) as the accent could be interesting - I think we'll have Diana knit us a sample for the store.

The pattern includes
-written and charted instructions
-schematics
-multi gauge instructions for lace, sock, sport and dk yarns
-three shapes of shawl or scarf - diamond, triangle or parallelogram
-suggestions for customizing

Unpacking
It's here. Mr. Canada Post brought in 3 big boxes this morning. The first two were from LITLG. The yarn is awesome.
Bog Myrtle
Garden Party
Meadow
Metanoia
Rain
I've been playing with colours. There could be another Find Your Fade in my future.
The third box was from Freia Fibers. We have new colours of Shawl Ball.
Pattern: Sonoma Wrap (purchased on Ravelry)
You need two balls of Shawl Ball and 3.75mm needles.
After finishing Clue One on my Ambah MKAL last night I worked on Outline. It is finished! Here are preblocking pictures. It's laying out in the sewing room right now and it should be dry tomorrow.
Then I worked on the Medialuna Shawl. The pattern is now available to purchase on Ravelry.
Lucy and dad stopped by after a visit to the dog park.

Pattern written for lace, used two shawl balls, alternating ever other row to extend the gradient and make a longer scarf.

Linen Stitch
With the threat of freezing rain this morning, I was in the store very early. There was time to sit down to finish and send out a newsletter.
I also had time to do some knitting.
The picture doesn't show it but I've made it to the spot where the colours are changing. The fun part. The grey background is fading into mauve. The peach stripes will start getting lighter in the next few rows.
Classic Elite has a new pattern - a Linen Stitch Scarf in Liberty Wool. You can download the pattern for free on Ravelry...
Today's Tip:
When you are doing Linen Stitch the pattern says to slip one with yarn in back (or yarn in front). This does not mean right side or wrong side. It means towards you (front) or away from you (back).
We started watching 24 Legacy last night. We're two hours in and it's enjoyable. I can knit and watch so it meets the criteria of a good show :)

Linen stitch gives a woven look to this simple scarf with unfinished edges. By using two different striping colorways of Liberty Wool, each scarf will be unique, depending where in the stripe sequence you begin and how the printed colorways interact. Every few rows reveals a new surprising color combination! The scarf in the picture took 6 balls (3 balls each of 2 different colours).

#yarnlovechallenge
I'm a little late to the party. This was started on Ravelry at the beginning of February. If you are on Instagram/Facebook/Twitter you might see some of your friends participating and using #yarnlovechallenge in their posts.
1. Introduction
Most of you know about my store but if you don't here it is briefly. I learned to knit when I was 4. When I was 8 I decided that I was going to have a yarn store. We opened when I was 19 and are now in our 30th year. I still love getting up everyday and going to work.
3. Currently Making
5. Community
One of the highlights of our year is Knitting Camp. Some of our Campers have been with us for years. They live far and wide and we only meet up once a year. We love to have new Campers join us as well. The more the merrier - lots of people spending the weekend together bonding over knitting.
7. Stripes
Outline is blocked and now the ends need to be sewn in. I had many things to choose from for stripes - I like to knit with colour.
8. Where I craft
My table in the store with three projects and notes.
A newsletter went out yesterday morning and I've been receiving feedback that people didn't get it. If your email address ends in bell.net or sympatico.ca, can you let me know if you received it or not?
You can download it here...
Here is the link to January's newsletter - a lot of people missed this one too...
Now it's time to get back to my knitting. We're going to watch a new show on the W Network called Imposters.
