We have another addition to the Food Drive prize basket. An interchangeable Karbonz needle set from Diamond Yarns. The prize keeps getting better.

We're still taking donations - we'll take them until noon on Saturday. Please help out if you can.

We have all of our donations now so everything has been wrapped up to look pretty. Wrapping isn't my strong suit but I think we did a pretty good job.

Someone else is in love with Find Your Fade. Caroline finished hers last night and ran in this morning to show it off. Her colours are totally different than any of mine and I really like them! We quickly took a few pictures in the store - her kids were with her and were ready to go. I totally understand. I'm feeling a bit like that today. It's warm out - I want to do something outside.

Caroline used Skinny Singles from Hedgehog. She's ready to start another one but is waiting to see what comes in our next shipment.

Okay, it was warm outside earlier today when I started my post. It isn't quite as warm now. The wind is blowing and the temperature is dropping. It looks like sweater weather again tomorrow.

I'm into the 4th colour. I have 20 more rows of garter stitch and then it's onto the lace. My 5th, 6th and 7th colours are my favourite. I really want to keep knitting tonight but if I do that I won't make it to work tomorrow.

Get it before it's gone

The Honey Cowl from madelinetosh is one of our favourite patterns. Super simple and takes 1 or 2 skeins of tosh merino dk or dk.

The pattern is free on Ravelry...

It was brought to my attention today that merino dk has been discontinued. There were some unhappy faces in the store.
FIBER + 100% MERINO WOOL

LENGTH + DK WEIGHT - 225 YARDS | 205 METERS

GAUGE + KNIT| 20 - 22 STITCHES = 4 INCHES OR 10CM | US 6 - 7 OR 4.0 - 4.5MM

CARE + MACHINE WASH COLD ON GENTLE CYCLE | AIR DRY LAYING FLAT

All in stock merino dk is on sale for 20% off. The sale is available in the store and on phone orders. We are going to confirm our stock numbers and then offer the discount to online orders as well.

It's 9pm and I'm finally getting to knit. When I got home from work my iPhone wouldn't connect to our home Internet. Beth checked hers and it wouldn't work either. The iPads and computers were connected. I live chatted with our Internet provider - not them it's our phones. Live chatted with the phone carrier. Not them. It's the Internet provider. Called the Internet provider. Not them. It's our phones. I was getting really mad and frustrated by now. Then the iPads stopped connecting. Got a very nice lady on the phone from our Internet provider and now everything works. Technology is good until it doesn't work.

Oh yeah, I made a small mistake on Find Your Fade today. I was supposed to stop increasing at one edge of the shawl but I kept right on going. I was 8 rows too far before I realized. No, I didn't rip back. I'm going to start working from the pattern now and my shawl will end up a touch longer and wider. Note to self - read the pattern!!!

This morning started with a trip to the dentist. It was just a cleaning so it wasn't a painful visit. I got back to the store and was doing some paper work when we heard a thud. Mr. Canada Post brought in the first box from Hedgehog Fibres. We should see the next box early in the week.

The new colours are beautiful.

We have two more Potluck colours.

The first clue came out today for Stephen West's MKAL.  I cast on at 6pm and didn't get very far. I'm going to sit down now and do a few rows. The pattern looks interesting (not too crazy so far) and I'm going to have fun playing with my bag of purple yarn.

Thanks for your help

Thanks for all your donations for the Ancaster Community Food Drive.

Beth picked up the food and money this morning to deliver it.

We had $840 and a lot of cans.

Our last customer of the day drew the names for our winners.

The winner of the gift basket is Sara T-D from Milton.

The winner of the Log Cabin Afghan kit is Tracey W from London.

Congratulations ladies.

Beth worked today sorting food and sent me this picture. They collected 102,500 pounds of food plus 15,000 pounds of potatoes.

So far the Marled Magic is fun. I'm going to include a picture of mine so far at the end of the post.

Many of you are afraid of the mystery aspect. I totally understand. If you are going to spent money and that many hours knitting something you want to make sure you're going to like it. This is a bit different. You don't have to purchase any yarn. You can make the whole shawl with stash. Think about it, use up stash and then you get to purchase new yarn :)

You are doubling your yarn and knitting on 5mm needles. This makes it go much quicker.

Here is a link to the Ravelry forum post with pictures of shawls so far. Stephen West writes a very good, easy to follow pattern. He includes videos links as well.

I'm mixing yarns from
-Mrs. Crosby
-Lorna's Laces
-madelinetosh
-Hedgehog
-Malabrigo
-Life in the Long Grass
-Prism
-Frabjous Fibers

One strand has been constant throughout this piece. The other strand changes every 2, 4 or 6 rows. I started out trying to grade my colours and then decided to reach in the bag and pull out a ball. That was my next colour.
Tomorrow I need to work some rows on my LITLG Find Your Fade. Once I'm finished the third colour of that shawl I can use the rest of the skein in this shawl.

Today was a very lazy day. Most of it was spent knitting on Find Your Fade #3.
Six more rows of garter stitch and then I get to join the next colour. Homeland is taping and then we have Billions. We are also watching The Good Fight - it's taping and we'll watch it tomorrow night. Sunday nights went from nothing on to too many shows.
It was a beautiful afternoon and the dogs had fun outside.
Now back to my knitting. I can't wait to see how the next colour works in my shawl.

Shaded Landscape

Mr. Canada Post brought in two huge boxes today. The first was from Prism. We received kits to make the Shaded Landscape Wrap.
Three strands of slender, silky Delicato team up in varying color combinations to create this dramatic wrap.

You take charge, changing color gradually and at will.

This lovely lace yarn is a terrific substitute for more costly silk. Lustrous, smooth and silky, the hand is superior with beautiful stitch definition and blocking retention. Tencel® is ten times more absorbent than cotton, stretches less than rayon, and is environmentally friendly (made from sustainable trees and in a closed-loop system that re-uses all chemicals).

Alex finished a shawl (pictures tomorrow) so I gave her a Shaded Landscape Wrap kit to knit up. She will be using the colours in the basket at the top of the post.

Iceberg (the colourway shown in the shawl)
Tumbleweed
Firelight

The second box from Hedgehog arrived today. We have Sock and Twist Sock.

There are also 2 new Potluck colours of Sock. Outline is calling my name :)

Half Pi

Classic Elite's Web-Letter that came out today features a beautiful shawl. The Palace Half Pi Shawl pattern is free.

Elizabeth Zimmerman's circular Pi Shawl revolutionized the way knitters connect geometry and knitting. There are countless variations using her simple and elegant construction for knitting a circle, including half circular or half Pi shawls. Edith Murphy added stripes and scallops to her half Pi and worked it up in quick knitting Palace. This shawl is sure to keep you warm and cozy – resting in your lap whilst knitting or when wearing the finished product.

This half circle shawl, begins at the center of the top, with rows becoming longer as you work increases down to the scalloped edge.

Palace’s on-trend soft pastel colors show the subtle tweed component of this sister yarn to Chalet and Chateau. The same wonderful chainette construction makes Palace interchangeable with Chalet and Chateau and all three will work together beautifully in stripes and colorblocks.

The website has been updated. Tosh merino dk is available online at the sale price - 20% off.
There are many sweater options for merino dk. Sarah, Lynn and I knit Gnarled Oak a few years ago. The pattern is well written and the cardigan is great. Sarah used merino dk for hers and is still wearing the cardigan.
A basic cardigan that features a stunning, embossed cabled oak leaf motif. Gnarled Oak is knit in one piece from the bottom up. The sleeves are knit separately and joined at the yoke.
You can purchase the pattern on Ravelry...

Another option for merino dk is the Linen Stitch scarf. Here is ours using three colours of merino dk - 1 skein each.

Alex finished an Evolution shawl in one of the new spring colours. It looks awesome!

I've been busy working away on Find Your Fade. I just can't stop. My planned bed time last night was an hour earlier than my actual bed time. I needed to do a few more rows :)

There is a great new pattern that uses Debbie Bliss Rialto Luxury Sock. You can purchase the pattern for Brackenreid on Ravelry.
Brackenreid is a slightly asymmetrical shawl/scarf, worked sideways on the bias, using garter stitch and an eyelet pattern.

Yarn used
Debbie Bliss Rialto luxury sock
1 ball shade New Orleans
1 ball shade Mutek
Debbie Bliss Rialto Luxury Sock is an exquisitely marled single-ply yarn with a gorgeous gradient quality. This smooth, hard-wearing superwash wool and polyamide blend would make fabulous socks, but it works equally well for shawls, cowls, or hats!

Take a look on Ravelry at all the great patterns designed by Brian Smith.
Started knitting when I was 25, but it didn’t last long. Couple of sweaters I think. I remember knitting a sweater for my mother which I thought was fabulous at the time. Looking back it was hideous and my mother was very tactful and gracious when accepting it.

Started again early 2011. Found Ravelry and it renewed my enthusiasm. Spent a few months buying other designers patterns, knitting them and learning as much as I could. There were still one or two disasters, but I can now say that my mother has a few gifts that I know she really likes.

Decided to try my hand at designing. Started with a scarf, then a shawl and truly loved the process of seeing something develop on my needles.
We had some fun in the store today. The winds in and around Ancaster were crazy. At one point today the wind at the Hamilton Airport was 114 km/hour. Just before 2pm the power went out in the store. I stayed until 3:30 and then gave up. I could knit but I couldn't help customers - they couldn't see the yarn. I couldn't ship mail orders. I couldn't blog. Tim's and Starbucks didn't have power so I couldn't get a tea. That's when I locked the door. I've been watching on Twitter and it should be back on around 8pm.

The next season of Survivor starts tonight. My knitting is ready.

New Projects

Here is Find Your Fade #3 so far. I laid it out on the table last night and I couldn't resist getting a picture as I walked by this morning.
The Rockshelter Sock is very nice to work with. If I had to guess (I don't know this for sure) I'd say that the base is the same as tosh sock. They have the same yardage and same twist. Another shipment of Rockshelter Sock will be arriving just in time for the Frolic. There will be 27 colours including
 Claude Monet
Porch Puddle

Lynda is almost finished her knitting so a new project is on the way to her.

Pattern: Aileas (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: Woolstok from Blue Sky Fibers
Aileas is worked seamlessly from the top down and features decorative faux cables on both fronts, the back and sleeves. Knitting starts at the shoulders. Back and both fronts are worked to underarm length, then joined and worked back and forth to final length with set-in pockets. Sleeves are picked up and worked in the round from the top down using short-rows to shape the sleeve caps. Collar and button bands are worked last.

Alex is working on the Shaded Landscape Wrap. Here is the first block. She brought it in for me to see the colours. The shawl is knit triple strand and she was worried about how she is combining the colours. It looks awesome! I am so jealous that she is getting to play with the Prism Delicato. The plan was for me to knit the shawl but I want it finished for the Frolic.
Diana also dropped by today with her finished scarf. The colours are amazing!

Pattern: Sonoma Scarf (purchased on Ravelry)
Yarn: 2 balls of Freia Shawl Ball - we used Dirty Hippie
Needles: 3.75mm

From Tina at Freia
Pattern written for lace, used two shawl balls and 3.75mm needles, alternating ever other row to extend the gradient and make a longer scarf.
Diana's next assignment is the Earth Stripe Wrap. I've always wanted this shawl so I'm excited that we'll have it in a few weeks.

Now I need to get knitting. The next clue from Stephen West is coming out tonight and I haven't finished the first clue. But I really want to work on Find Your Fade because I'm ten rows from the next colour. Decisions...

Clue #1

Earlier this week I started a newsletter. In the opening I mentioned how it was warm and sunny in Ancaster. Now I need to come up with something else. It is so cold today. And we're seeing some snow.

I thought that the Stephen West clue was coming out last night but it came out this morning. I'm still not at that point but the next two sections look interesting. Here is a link to the Ravelry Forum for the second clue. I've filtered it to just show pictures. If you look at post 197, the knitter has finished the second clue. This might entice you to join.

I didn't get very far this afternoon but did get a few rows knit tonight. This is the first clue so far. I figured that it was okay to show a picture now. If you are working on the shawl then you are at least this far on the first clue so I'm not ruining the surprise. Stephen's instructions are very well written. If you have any questions, he's probably answered it in the video he has for each clue.

I did a bit more stash diving tonight and found five different part balls of purple tosh merino light in a basket. I'm still convinced that there are more in my house - I'm going to do some digging on Sunday.

It's bed time or I won't make it to work in the morning. I totally lost track of time when I was seed stitching away.

Someone is watching me

I made it to the sixth colour. Finally. This was the first colour I chose for the shawl. I love it so I put it at the end where I will use almost the full skein.

Now the problem is that my seventh colour might be too close. When I'm further into this section I'll be able to tell.
Someone is watching me while I'm typing. I'm at the breakfast bar. In the kitchen. Close to the cookie jar. If I get up he'll be right beside just in case I'm feeling generous.

Have you been watching the weather forecast for this week? It looks like Tuesday could be a snow day.
Major winter storm threatens Southern Ontario early next week.

As if to remind us that spring has not officially begun yet, Mother Nature is gearing up for a significant winter storm. A developing low pressure centre currently over the Northwestern United States will track just south of the Great Lakes on Monday and Monday night.

Snow is forecast to spread into Southwestern Ontario during the day Monday then envelop much of Southern Ontario Monday night through Tuesday. Cold Arctic air already in place over the Great Lakes will ensure it will be a dry fluffier snow, creating some blowing snow issues as winds pick up during the storm.

Total snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 centimetres are likely with enhanced amounts closer to 30 centimetres possible in the Hamilton to Niagara corridor, due to added moisture from Lake Ontario. Snowfall amounts will likely be appreciably less farther north towards Georgian Bay or into parts of Eastern Ontario. The snow should taper off Tuesday night in most areas.

This snowstorm has the potential to significantly affect travel due to accumulating snow and blowing snow resulting in hazardous winter driving conditions.

By the end of the month we should have a new collection from Opal.

100g Ball ca. 425m
Characteristics:
- Soft and absorbent
- Skin friendly
- Hard wearing
- Non-felting
- Non-shrinking

9362 Creamy Berry

Beth has a few pairs of socks from Jane that are knit in Opal. She throws them in the washer and dryer and then come out great every time.

There wasn't much knitting today - I was finishing a few orders to make sure yarn arrives in time for the Frolic. Here are a few more colours of Rockshelter Sock that will be in the next shipment.
62 Black Opal
79 Gelert and LLewellyn
145 Apocalypse
134 Jazz Singer

It's a busy TV evening. Homeland. Billions. The Good Fight. I'll make it to the lace section tonight.
Melo was enjoying The Big Bang Theory this morning. He loves to watch TV. Especially the commercials. Animals are the best. He cries and gets very, very close to the TV. We're continually cleaning off nose prints. Cars are also pretty exciting. The more expensive the better - he really wants a Mercedes.

At this point it looks like the store will be closed tomorrow. It's already coming down in Ancaster (at 11am) and the forecast says that we could see 30cm of snow.

Beth shoveled the back deck at 6:50.
Here she is shoveling it again at 9:30. It's blowing so hard that I took the picture from inside the house. I wasn't going out there.

The Weather Channel just said that we've already had 20cm of snow in Hamilton. And I believe them.

Here are some bright colours to make your day happier. There will be a new yarn arriving just in time for the Frolic.
Yarn Love is Hand Crafted

Yarn Love isn’t just yarn. Every skein of Yarn Love contains my passion for color, my fascination with dye and the love of the artist (me!) for my creation. When you’re ready to start your project with yarn as artistic as you are, grab Yarn Love.

Before your yarn even arrives to you, it has been touched at least 21 times. Some dye techniques are more intensive and add to that number. Each skein is unique. Even ones that share the same pan develop a personality distinctly their own. As you knit, crochet, or weave your Yarn Love you’ll discover the joy and whimsy for yourself.

Snow Day

The snow is still coming down hard in Hamilton and Ancaster. Right now I couldn't get to work if I wanted to. Our road hasn't been plowed.

Winter storm warning in effect for:

City of Hamilton
Hazardous winter conditions are expected.

Winter storm continues today into tonight.

A weather system tracking south of the Great Lakes has brought a significant snowfall areas near the west end of Lake Ontario. Strong and gusty northeasterly winds are picking up extra moisture from Lake Ontario, resulting in snow heavy at times for many areas today into tonight.

A further 5 to 10 cm of new snow are expected today, with perhaps 2 to 4 more centimetres tonight across the region.

Reports of 20 to 30 cm of snow in the Hamilton area have already been received by Environment Canada as of early this morning.

Strong and gusty northeasterly winds will whip up the freshly fallen snow resulting in widespread very low to at times nil visibility in blowing snow.

Dangerous winter driving conditions are expected to continue today and tonight. Travel is not recommended.

The snow will end by Wednesday morning winter storm moves away to the northeast.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.
Stay warm and knit lots today.

Lynn sent me a picture last night. Her sweater is finished and it looks great! I wonder what her next project is going to be.

Pattern: Mailin
Yarn: Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok
It's done, just needs a good blocking.
Would definitely knit this again. Woolstok was great.
Mailin is a cozy sweater worked seamlessly from the top down. First the yoke is worked back and forth to the final neck CO. From that point the yoke is worked in the round to the underarms, where sleeve sts are placed on hold to work the body first top down to the bottom. Sleeve sts are then placed back on the needles to work them top down in the round. Neck finishing is worked last - the pattern includes two neck finishing options (option 1: scoop neck; option 2: cowl neck) as well as two slightly different versions of the front lace pattern.
Beth measured the snow that is sitting on our patio table. At 1pm it measured 38cm (15"). That isn't blown snow. We've shoveled the driveway and sidewalk twice today. My arms are sore :)

It snowed here all day. It would slow down a bit and then I would think about heading to the store. I was feeling guilty about being home all day. Then the wind started to blow and more snow came down.

I made it to number seven. Right now the last two colours look close but I think after a few rows we'll be able to see the difference.

It's early to bed tonight. We have to shovel one more time before work. And there is a road trip planned after work. We're heading to Milton to pick up the madelinetosh shipment.

It's never too early to start thinking about spring. It will be coming - I think.

This week's Web-Letter from Classic Elite features a hat in Hanako.

Download the free pattern on Ravelry...
Cotton and Linen combine for a summery yarn in a popular worsted weight. The linen fiber has a subtle sheen and adds body; cotton adds stitch definition and softness. This yarn gets even softer the more it’s worn and the light and vibrant palette is perfect for warm weather wear. The generous yardage per hank makes Hanako a good value.

One hank of Hanako makes this fun, summery hat. Allow the brim to flop, shading your eyes, or fold it up and secure with your favorite pin.
The hat is shown in the colour Thistle. It's on the way to us. See the colours currently in stock...

We're home from Milton with 9 huge boxes of tosh. There are 1500 skeins so it'll take me a few days to unpack. As I progress through the boxes I will update the tosh on the website. We are getting

Cathy and Sarah came for a visit this morning. Sarah was wearing her new Lilli Pilli (pattern purchased on Ravelry). She used Hedgehog Skinny Singles - Graphite, Typewriter and Glacier. I really need to make this shawl - it is beautiful.

Now they are going to do a mother-daughter KAL - the Assana Wrap (pattern purchased on Ravelry)

Cathy is using Glacier, Wish and Boombox.

Sarah is using Sorry not Sorry, Oracle and Cheeky.

Sarah has already cast on. I wonder who is going to finish first.

The store looks like a hurricane blew through. I finished unpacking the boxes of merino light - here are the rest of the new colours.  Video Baby

I was looking on Ravelry this morning and came across Mary's latest project. We helped her pick the yarn and the finished garment is amazing.

If Mary comes to Knitting Camp I'm hoping she'll let me put it in the fashion show.
I emailed her right away to ask if I could share her pictures.
Thank you! I was really pleased with it. The yarn was perfect for the style and really nice to work with. The pattern was fun too and well written.

I would be honoured to have it in one of your blog posts!

While unpacking the many, many skeins of tosh we are receiving shipments from other companies. Yesterday a box came with Malabrigo Mechita. The new colours are awesome.

We liked Mecha so much, we hit it with a shrink ray! Mechita is a fingering-weight version of our beautifully-dyed single-ply superwash yarn. Just as soft and rich as the original, but great for lighter projects!

Great for: Shawls, scarves, garments, accessories, baby and kids items, lace, cables, textured stitches.

What a beautiful day. I finished the knitting on my shawl. Now it needs to be blocked and some ends sewn in. The Rockshelter Sock was great to knit with and I would definitely use it again.

Now I'm off to swatch. Yes. I'm going to swatch. Churchmouse Yarns has a new set of patterns coming out at the end of the week. I can't show pictures yet but will as soon as I can. I'm going to knit one of the patterns for myself. It is a garment, hence the swatching. And the yarn is linen. Hence the swatching. I don't want it to look sloppy.
Erika Knight's Studio Linen is very nice to knit with. I was surprised at how neat my knitting looked - I was afraid the linen could throw the tension off.  We'll have more stock arriving in a week.

Now it's time to cast on. I would like to have the garment finished for the Frolic but I think that's a bit ambitious. I think a more realistic goal is TNNA in June.
